1 1 Ornament Dolls These 6 (15cm) mini dolls make perfect holiday ornaments or small gifts! The faces are sealed paper, which makes these dolls fast and easy to create. Try printing and drawing your own faces for more variety. You can also use different colors and decorations to suit any seasonal theme! Here is what you will need

2 2 Supplies and Materials If you do not have a color laser printer at home, you can have the faces printed at a copy shop. Toner printing is recommended as it is waterproof. If you print the faces with an ink jet printer, use two coats of a spray matte fixative over the ink to seal it (the matte fixative is the same stuff you use to seal artist chalks and charcoal drawings, found in the art supply section). Printed faces (toner printing is best) Small piece of ultrasuede or similar fabric 8 square (21 cm) Sewing pins Scissors Needle and thread Sewing machine (or just use the hand sewing materials) Matte Acrylic Gel Medium Optional: colored pencils Stuffing or batting Assorted acrylic paints and brushes Small pieces of red & green felt or ultrasuede Yarn or fibers for hair Fabri-tac glue Bits of lace, trim and ribbon

I especially recommend making a hollow frame for your face pattern so you can center the face in the cut

3 3 Use the pattern pieces at the end of this lesson to cut out the face and body pieces. I made stencils out of cardboard so I could just trace the shapes onto the fabric and paper. I especially recommend making a hollow frame for your face pattern so you can center the face in the cut out. The body pattern is designed with a ¼ (6-7mm) seam allowance. Stitch all the way around the body pieces with the right sides facing in.

4 4 Trim off any excess fabric edges. Cut a sit along the center of one side and use this opening to turn the body.

If preserving and protecting the face paper is not important to you, you could also use Mod Podge for this.

5 5 To make the paper face more durable I use Golden Matte Gel Medium. You can use this as both a glue and a protective coating use it on both sides of the paper face. If preserving and protecting the face paper is not important to you, you could also use Mod Podge for this. Before applying the faces, feel free to add your own alterations with colored pencils or paint. For example, I gave the face below freckles. I also darkened the eyebrows and lips on another face.

To match them up, I cut out one arm piece and lay it over a second piece of uncut fabric. I stitch the top piece to the bottom. Then I trim the fabric edges so they match up. Tip: Use a little glue to hold the thin arm piece to the fabric backing before you stitch around it.

7 7 Slide the arm piece through both side slits and center it so both arms are of equal length.

Now use a needle and thread to make a few whip stitches through the body and arm

8 8 Tip: You can always apply paint to the fabric to help it better match the skin tone of the face you are using. Now use a needle and thread to make a few whip stitches through the body and arm layers to close the gaps and secure the arms. The stitches don t need to be perfect you will hardly see them once the doll is complete.

9 9 To form the little legs, stitch along the center of the body about 2 (5cm). And stuff the little doll with batting or fiberfill.

10 10 Stitch the back slit closed. Again this stitching does not need to be perfect! Now our little doll is ready for decorating!

11 11 I begin with layers of paint for the tights and dress. Ultrasuede takes paint very nicely and does not require a primer. Use Fabri-tac fabric glue to apply yarn for the hair. There is no right or wrong way to do this :). I am using a thick yarn, so I just laid it on in a single layer.

To make the shapes, I just drew right on the fabric (wrong side) and then cut along the lines.

12 12 Make a simple little embellishment using a bit of red and green fabric. Cut out leaf and berry shapes. Paint simple stripes with additional acrylic paint make sure to paint a line down the center to indicate the legs.

13 13 Here are the girls all decked out! To make the polka dots I dipped the tip of a cotton swab in a small amount of paint and used it like a stamp.
