1 Mulberry Newsletter August - September 2018 Message from our President Thank you for helping fill our frogs and sewing on the eyes. We have a lot of things going on. I will talk about them at the business meeting on Tuesday. Please try to be there. We need your input. We also want to decide on a charity for the proceeds from our charity sale so please think about the charity you would like to support. I am looking forward to doing a demo on appliquik. I think I have made every mistake possible and hopefully I will be able to help you avoid the ones I have made. We were able to secure an additional table for the Quilters Expo in October and we will be filling our Mulberry Floats right before the event. Think about the quilts that you want to enter in the Showcase of Quilts. The deadline is fast approaching. 2 Blotto Presenters for 2018 August blocks (to be drawn in Sept) were designed by Barbara Fairly. The fish are cut from Kaffe Fassett fabric. Its up to the quilter what to do with it. Barbara requested that if in water, it would be in water-like fabric. We have a fish bowl, a deep-water fish, one going for the fish hook, etc! These are coming out great. **The July blocks have not been drawn yet. There will be two drawings in Sept. Fat Quarter Drawings The color is the gemstone for that month. (if you don t know the color of the gem you can look it up on the internet.) Important: to be fair to all, please use quilt shop quality FQs. The FQs sold at Joann s are of lesser quality. Quilting has been a desire of mine since I was in my twenties back in the seventies. My Grandmother and my husband s Grandmother both made quilts and donated them to American Indian reservations. My sister in law and my niece both quilt and seeing the beautiful quilts that they make has kept me interested in learning how to quilt. I think I have found the right place to learn. I have a varied back ground in arts and crafts from Tole painting, crewel stitchery and stained glass work. I am thankful to have moved to the Briar Meadow area of The Villages. Judy Walpole shared this with us: I was just watching "Quilting Arts" on TV and the hostess was interviewing SJ Kinman, a quilter/artist/designer---who, when referring to complementary colors, quoted Georgia O'Keeffe re: the color wheel: "Colors that are adjacent to each other are friends; but colors that are opposite each other are lovers." I just loved this artist's work. Very modern and somewhat abstract. She said "I'm so done with perfection." I loved that quote too! Member Bio: Donna Blodgett For the majority of my life, I lived in Massachusetts, however, after 19 years of cold, snow, ice dams and everything else that goes along with owning a home and New England winters, I decided to move to Florida. For work I then had an 8 year stay in Georgia then back to Florida where I settled in The Villages to be near a friend. I started quilting in 1976 with an applique Statue of Liberty. I subscribed to and read tons of quilting magazines to learn what quilting was all about. Making templates from cardboard and cutting with scissors was all we had then but I persevered. I moved from wall hangings to bed quilts. Stack n Whack quilts caught my eye and off I went making them for everyone I knew. Now I am hooked on Quiltworx Judy Niemeyer - paper piecing, although I will take time out to work on my machine embroidery and other non-paper pieced quilts.

August Guild Meeting The Guild Meeting in August was Scrap Quilt Secrets. She was very entertaining and showed us many inspirational pieces! Diane Knott gave some

4 wonderful tips on using scraps and pairing up colors. This is just a small sample. Ginger s Demo Iris folding. Find more about Iris folding on the internet. They make great gifts. Carol Knoll made these cute placemats! The tails are the napkins. Carolyn Aymond finished one of her UFOs. I wish you could see the embellishments!
