3 Position Overview Vice President of Institutional Advancement Reporting to the President, the Vice President of Institutional Advancement will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution to this outstanding institution by leading it to new levels of engagement with its external constituencies and even greater achievement in fundraising. As chief development and alumnae relations officer, the Vice President and her/his team will develop and execute programs for donor cultivation and outreach and alumnae engagement. Scripps is seeking a seasoned advancement leader and manager with a significant track record of personal and successful involvement in individual, major, and principal giving and a commitment to liberal arts and women s education. This individual will be aggressive about goals and a strong motivator of people. Key Responsibilities: The Vice President has among her/his principal responsibilities the following: Serving as the College s senior development officer and chief advisor to the president, the trustees, and other College officials on all matters involving current or potential philanthropic support; Designing, planning, and directing the day-to-day operations of the anticipated comprehensive campaign, as well as other major gift initiatives; Hiring, training, supporting, and leading the staff of the Development and Alumnae Relations Offices; Developing and providing leadership in close collaboration with the president, trustees, and other volunteer leaders, the dean of faculty, other members of the senior management team, and College staff for programs that will lead to the philanthropic support required to underwrite priority needs of the College, including operations, endowment, facilities, and support of continuing programs; Working with the vice president of business affairs/treasurer to discuss fundraising plans, trusts, and annuities investment performance, and to ensure appropriate systems are in place for the proper accounting and reporting of all pledges and gifts; Establishing a vision for and ensuring the execution of a comprehensive program of alumnae and parent engagement that leads to mutually productive interaction between Scripps College and its many external constituencies; Representing the College as appropriate to alumnae, friends, corporations and foundations; Coordinating the identification and solicitation of potential donors, through meetings with the president, development officers, and others throughout the College; Serving as primary staff liaison to the Scripps College Board of Trustees Institutional Advancement Committee, as well as working closely with virtually all members of the Board; and Undertaking such other duties as the president may assign. 4 Educational/Experience Requirements: The Vice President of Institutional Advancement will be an experienced major and principal gift fundraiser with a track record of leadership. S/he will bring significant experience at a leadership level with alumni/ae relations programs and with a comprehensive campaign of significant breadth and high aspirations. A bachelor s degree is required and an advanced degree is preferred. A track record of progressively responsible management experience with responsibility for people, programs, and budgets is required. Unquestioned integrity, excellent judgment, diplomacy, creativity, and the willingness to assess and take calculated risks. Demonstrated track record of working and interacting productively with diverse people and groups. Familiar with the latest technology in use in the advancement arena. Development Overview In 2013, Scripps College launched the most ambitious campaign in its history. Its theme, More Knowledge, More Truth, More Imagination, More Justice, More Opportunity We Want More: The Campaign for Scripps College, paid homage to Scripps founder, Ellen Browning Scripps, who wanted more for women and humanity. This $175 million comprehensive campaign is aimed at providing the resources for long-term institutional growth and to achieve strategic goals. Some of the key campaign priorities include scholarships, faculty and curriculum support, signature campus projects, including the expansion of academic and residential facilities, and strengthening unrestricted endowment funds. The completion of this campaign will position Scripps to not only continue, but to accelerate, its trajectory of success, achievement, and national prominence. SCRIPPS COLLEGE PROSPECTUS 4

5 Slated to end in June 2018, the campaign has raised $147 million, or 84%, of the overall goal to date. Accomplishments include the establishment of four endowed faculty chairs and 34 new scholarship endowment funds, the construction of three new facilities, and the establishment of the Laspa Center for Leadership. The Scripps Fund continues to be a priority as well. This past year, alumnae, families, and friends gave nearly $3.9 million to the fund; the fund has grown by 50% since Overview When Scripps was founded, it was one of few institutions dedicated to educating women for lives of commitment and engagement. Leadership Lara Tiedens President Lara Tiedens was appointed the ninth president of Scripps College in June 2016, by a unanimous vote of the College s Board of Trustees. As president, she holds the title of the W.M. Keck Presidential Chair, established in Before joining Scripps as president, she was the Jonathan B. Lovelace Professor of Organizational Behavior and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. She served as the Morgan Stanley Director of Stanford s Center for Leadership Development and Research and taught in a variety of programs, including the MBA program, Executive Education, and the PhD program at Stanford University. 7 Tiedens was an associate editor of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology and was a Fellow at Center for the Advanced Study of the Behavioral Sciences. She holds a BA in psychology from Carleton College, and an MA and PhD in social psychology from the University of Michigan. Location Claremont, California: Claremont is a small city with the resources of a larger metropolitan area in Los Angeles County and only 35 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Located at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, Claremont is the quintessential college town, known as the City of Trees and PhDs. The center of Claremont is the Village, a strollable downtown destination where café tables dot the sidewalks and shops invite browsing on tree-lined, bicycle-friendly streets. A movie theater, street festivals, and weekly farmers market provide entertainment. The population is just under 35,000.
