1 Philadelphia, PA ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT, DREXEL FUND THE SEARCH A comprehensive global research university, Drexel University has approximately 25,000 students, 140,000 alumni, and is ranked among the top 100 universities in the nation. Anthony J. Drexel founded Drexel in 1891, launching a tradition of innovation coupled with real world education. Today, Drexel's reach is broader and more impactful than ever, with 14 schools and colleges, plus Drexel elearning, as well as several campuses and international educational and research partnerships. Drexel has one of the largest and most well regarded online degree programs in the United States, currently enrolling over 5,000 students with online alumni of over 5,000. With schools of medicine and law, and The Academy of Natural Sciences, Drexel has the range of expertise necessary for research that can change the world, and its interdisciplinary research institutes are perfectly positioned to lead in critical fields like autism and nanotechnology. According to President John A. Fry, Drexel is committed to becoming "the most civically engaged university in the United States." President Fry also characterizes Drexel as "creative, diverse, entrepreneurial, impatient, unpretentious and a little fearless." Drexel University is currently seeking an Associate Vice President of the Drexel Fund to manage all aspects of a comprehensive annual fund program. The Associate Vice President will oversee the University's Annual Giving programs, the Faculty and Professional Staff "Why I Give" campaign, the Reunion and Senior Class Giving Programs, and assist with the annual trustee solicitation. The Associate Vice President s major responsibilities include creating and implementing a comprehensive, strategic and integrated plan to maximize annual fund contributions university-wide. The Associate Vice President will need to develop strategies to engage online graduates. He or she will lead an experienced, effective and dedicated team in identifying annual giving opportunities which comprises all gifts, from all sources, through all channels that are solicited on an annual basis. The ideal candidate for this role will be a highly experienced fundraising professional, with concentrated annual fund expertise. The Associate Vice President will possess the stature and interpersonal skills to meaningfully engage and support the Institution s diverse leaders, alumni, students, volunteers, donors, and prospects in a manner that generates excitement, facilitates action, deepens commitment, and increases support. He or she will have the proven ability to strategically and effectively navigate within multifaceted organizational environments, ideally demonstrated through direct experience within a complex research university setting. The Associate Vice President will be a transparent and collaborative team member who thrives in a workplace that strongly values diversity, creativity, innovation, and an entrepreneurial spirit. Drexel University: Page 1
2 The culture of the Office of Institutional Advancement that the Associate Vice President will be joining is team-oriented, with a commitment to donor-centric best practices. We use data-driven tools (for which exceptional training is provided), such as electronic prospect screening and predictive modeling, quantitative and qualitative research and attitudinal surveys in formulating our strategic decisions. We create a learning organization for the Institutional Advancement staff, promoting staff from within when feasible and recruiting professionals whose values, work ethic and expertise align with and complement ours. The Associate Vice President-Drexel Fund will be a member of the Office of Institutional Advancement's Senior Management Team, which consists of all direct reports to the Senior Vice President, and the managers of Institutional Advancement's major functional units. This leadership team, led by the Senior Vice President for Institutional Advancement, develops strategies to address the challenges and opportunities facing the division. Drexel University has retained Freeman Philanthropic Services, LLC to assist on this recruitment. ABOUT DREXEL UNIVERSITY In founding Drexel University, Philadelphia financier and philanthropist Anthony J. Drexel launched a tradition of innovation. Mr. Drexel envisioned an institution of higher learning uniquely suited to the needs of a rapidly growing industrial society and of the young men and women seeking their place in it core values that continue to guide the University in its modern era. Mr. Drexel s vision was officially realized in 1891 with the establishment of the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry. Originally a non-degree-granting institution, Drexel began conferring the bachelor of science degree in 1914, when its 18 departments were organized into four schools. In 1927, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania granted Drexel the privilege to confer the master of science degree, and in 1965, the doctor of philosophy degree. The cornerstone of Drexel s career preparation model has been the University's co-operative education program. Introduced at Drexel in 1919 as one of the first models of its kind, the program has become integral to the University's educational experience. Through it, students alternate periods of study with periods of full-time professional employment within their field of study, providing unrivaled, valuable professional experience. The institution's curriculum and organization of its academic programs have evolved to include 14 schools and colleges, plus Drexel elearning. In accord with this evolution, Drexel has undergone two changes in name, in 1936 becoming Drexel Institute of Technology and in 1970, Drexel University. The current title reflects the institution's commitment to research, as well as the breadth of its programs. Drexel's mission, services, and opportunities expanded further in April 2002 when MCP Hahnemann University a major Philadelphia health sciences institution became Drexel University College of Medicine. In May 2011, the University established an affiliation with one of Philadelphia s most storied institutions, the Academy of Natural Sciences. These historic events have extended the resources of Drexel and led to many productive synergies in teaching and research. Drexel University: Page 2
3 Drexel s foundation as an innovating institution has established the university as a national leader in higher education. In 1983, Drexel became the nation's first university to require all undergraduates to have personal access to a microcomputer for use in all of their coursework. The University continued its commitment to integrating technology when it became the first university to operate a fully wireless campus in In 2006, Drexel became the first major research university to open a new law school in 25 years and is one of only two universities operating law schools that follow a co-operative model of learning. Through all of the changes and evolution, Drexel's core mission has held constant. Since its founding, the institution has remained a privately controlled, nonsectarian, coeducational center of higher learning, distinguished by a commitment to preparing men and women for success in their chosen careers. Its greatly expanded enrollment, campuses, and curriculum reflect a history of responsiveness to societal and individual needs all of which Mr. Drexel sought to address in his day. More information regarding Drexel's transformative plans can be located at LEADERSHIP PRESIDENT John Anderson Fry, appointed Drexel University s 14th president in 2010, has served higher education for his entire professional life. Through his roles as a consultant, board member, chief operating officer and chief executive, he has acquired a deep and broad understanding of the challenges of leading a major educational institution. Fry set out to transform Drexel into what he has termed the modern urban university of the future an institution that harnesses both its long-established and still-emerging strengths to serve its students, its neighborhood, its city and the nation. Under Fry s leadership, Drexel is setting a new standard for cooperative education, transforming its online and hybrid offerings, and becoming a powerful force for economic development in the Greater Philadelphia region. Fry led the University community s collaboration on a five-year strategic plan, launched in 2012, to guide the pursuit of those goals. Fry has announced high-impact academic initiatives to increase the breadth of opportunity for students and faculty. He negotiated a groundbreaking affiliation in 2011 with the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, America s oldest major natural history museum and a world leader in natural sciences research. Drexel launched the Close School of Entrepreneurship in 2013 to integrate entrepreneurial learning into the curriculum and support campus innovators. And Fry has signed agreements for academic and research partnerships to enhance Drexel s global connections in China, Turkey, Israel, Brazil and Chile. Drexel s trend of growth and increased excellence in the student body has continued under Fry. For the academic year, total enrollment rose to 25,500, up nearly 8 percent from two years earlier, and the average GPA of the incoming undergraduate class rose from 3.4 to 3.6 in the same period. Fulfilling a commitment he made to Drexel s neighbors in his first address as Drexel president, Fry has championed major neighborhood initiatives including the PECO-Drexel Education Collaborative supporting local public schools, the Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation and the Dornsife Center for Neighborhood Partnerships. He also attracted corporate partners to invest in Drexel s campus development; for example, American Campus Communities is investing more than $250 million in residential/retail projects, which will reduce the destabilizing effect of student housing on surrounding blocks, while Drexel s enhanced Employee Home Purchase Assistance Program encourages increased owner occupancy in the neighborhood. Drexel University: Page 3
4 A focal point of Drexel s strategic plan is to become an even greater economic engine for Greater Philadelphia. Fry announced the creation of Drexel Ventures, a subsidiary enterprise to help faculty and students partner with the private sector to build businesses around their inventions. And those relationships will be at the heart of Drexel s Innovation Neighborhood, a 12-acre live/work/learn development on University real estate adjacent to Philadelphia s Amtrak 30th Street Station. Under Fry s leadership, Drexel has seen a significant increase in fundraising and a growing number of philanthropic partners. A $400 million campaign reached its goal ahead of schedule in 2013 and brought in more than 16,000 new donors. In addition to serving as president of Drexel University, Fry serves as president of the Drexel University College of Medicine and Drexel e-learning, the University s operating company for online education. Fry came to Drexel from Franklin & Marshall College, where he served as president from 2002 and was instrumental in the college s academic growth, campus and neighborhood development and improved finances. He raised the college s national profile and brought a renewed confidence to the institution. During his tenure, the quality of the student body improved dramatically as measured by a 63-point gain in average SATs over seven years. He also improved the student-to-faculty ratio to 10:1 by adding more than 40 faculty lines, oversaw an updated curriculum and made a long-term commitment to increase financial aid. Fry forged new partnerships with the city and neighbors, improving the surrounding business district and neighborhoods. From 1995 to 2002, Fry served as executive vice president of the University of Pennsylvania. He was a major force in developing and implementing Penn s Agenda for Excellence, a comprehensive plan that guided strategic initiatives from 1996 to He also built a coalition of nonprofit, business, neighborhood and governmental organizations in support of a multi-pronged strategy to address the key challenges facing the University City neighborhood in West Philadelphia. In a relatively short period of time, residential property values rose significantly, the crime rate declined dramatically and hundreds of millions of dollars were invested in commercial infrastructure and economic development. Before joining Penn, Fry was a management consultant for the higher education and nonprofit sectors. He worked closely with some of the nation s premier colleges and universities, first with KPMG Peat Marwick and then with Coopers & Lybrand s National Higher Education Consulting Practice, where he was elected a partner in the firm and eventually became partner-in-charge of the national practice. Fry serves on the boards of Lafayette College, The Shipley School, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Milton Hershey School, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, Select Greater Philadelphia, the Ben Franklin Technology Development Authority, the Philadelphia Schools Partnership and US Squash, which recently elected him chairman. He was the founding chairman of the University City District and served in that capacity for five years. He is also a director of Community Health Systems, Delaware Investments and the Hershey Trust. He previously served as chair of the NCAA Division III Presidents Council and on the Executive Committee of the NCAA. He was appointed by President George W. Bush to the Benjamin Franklin Tercentenary Commission, and co-chaired the transition team of Governor-Elect Edward Rendell of Pennsylvania. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Fry graduated from Lafayette College and earned a master s degree in business administration from the New York University Stern School of Business. Fry and his wife, Cara, an art historian, have three children: Mia, a recent graduate of Williams College; Nathaniel, a freshman at Drexel s Westphal College of Media Arts & Design; and Phoebe, a seventh grader at The Shipley School.
