About The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard At the Radcliffe Institute, scholars, scientists, public intellectuals, and artists, as well as students, convene to do advanced study imaginative work that asks bold questions across traditional academic disciplines and has the potential to change our world. The Institute provides the protected time, space, and resources for leading scholars and artists to take big risks, to pursue unusual collaborations, to try out innovative approaches, and to develop new ideas and then to share them in Cambridge and online with a broad, global audience through workshops, lectures, conferences, exhibitions, and archival collections. The Radcliffe Institute is one of eight leading institutes for advanced study in the world, each of which has its own distinct objectives and approach. The Radcliffe Institute accomplishes its mission through three principal programs. The Fellowship Program brings together 50 innovators in an array of disciplines and at various stages of their careers for a one year fellowship. With the resources the Institute provides, these women and men undertake transformative work. The Arthur and Elizabeth Schlesinger on the History of Women in America documents the lives of women in the past and present for the future. Its collections are an invaluable and widely used resource for scholars and students. Academic Ventures convenes experts from diverse disciplines and nations for groundbreaking collaborative work. Multiday seminars led by Harvard faculty members and Radcliffe fellows result in books, legislation, productive partnerships, scientific discoveries, and long-term research initiatives. Created as part of a 1999 merger between Harvard University and Radcliffe College, the Institute is the only one of Harvard University s 13 schools dedicated to advanced study. It is uniquely positioned to increase the University s ability to work as One Harvard through its cross-university initiatives and programs. RADCLIFFE INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY BACKGROUNDER 6
7 Embodying the highest values of inquiry, learning, and creativity, the Radcliffe Institute enriches Harvard University's intellectual life by creating links between its fellows and Harvard schools and departments, and by making its broad range of lectures and conferences, as well as research and learning opportunities, available to Harvard students and faculty. Serving as the think tank of Harvard, the Radcliffe Institute is rooted in a belief in the power of intellectual connections and intellectual community. Through thought-provoking public programming and innovative research, the Radcliffe Institute reinforces and extends the results of that community and those connections into the world beyond Radcliffe Yard. In addition to generating new knowledge that transcends traditional fields and sharing that knowledge broadly with a public that is hungry for deep examination of issues, the Institute continues Radcliffe College s commitment to the study of women, gender, and society by bringing more women into the Harvard faculty as Radcliffe Professors; by giving women scholars and artists the gift of precious yearlong fellowships to advance their work; by mounting seminars, lectures, and conferences that expand our understanding of the dynamics of gender, among many other topics; and by preserving the documents of women s lives and organizations at the Schlesinger Library. Some of the Schlesinger Library s priceless collections include the papers of: Susan B. Anthony, Julia Child, Shirley Graham Du Bois, Amelia Earhart, Betty Freidan, Pauli Murray, and Adrienne Rich. The world needs Radcliffe. It needed Radcliffe College when it was founded some 135 years ago. It needed Radcliffe College s Bunting Institute when it was founded in 1960 to create a fellowship community for female scholars and artists to pursue their work apart from their domestic responsibilities. And it needs the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study today, as a generator of new knowledge that also maintains a continuing commitment to the study of women, gender, and society. The Institute carries on the tradition of RADCLIFFE INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED STUDY BACKGROUNDER 7
8 Radcliffe College as a pioneering institution while also remembering women s educational and social achievements over the past 135 years. The Radcliffe Institute provides public programming in its commitment to reach beyond its walls and share its riches, including its collections, programs, and the work of faculty and fellows.
