4 THE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CENTRE OUR VISION The Toorak College Science and Technology Centre will equip our students with the essential skills and knowledge to be ready for a lifetime of enquiry and understanding. Toorak College aims to ensure our students thrive in this challenging world. To do this, we need leading-edge programs, outstanding staff and first-class resources. Central to this future and our continued educational excellence, is the Science and Technology Centre. Leading edge laboratories and flexible learning spaces will enable spontaneous collaboration and innovation across scientific disciplines, encouraging every student to step beyond their level of comfort. 5 It is estimated that in the next decade 75% of jobs in the fastest-growing industries will require skills in STEM. However, enrolment in STEM subjects has been in steady decline in Australia. While both males and females benefit from STEM knowledge and skills, worldwide females are underrepresented in STEM studies and careers. Only one in four IT graduates and fewer than one in 10 engineering graduates are women. Women occupy around one quarter of roles in the STEM workforce in Australia overall. Women s natural affinity for collaboration and communication make them a vital part of a diverse STEM industry future. 6 WHY STEM MATTERS STEM literacy brings about an understanding of the world around us in a logical way guided by the principals of scientific thought. Scientific advancement changes our knowledge of the world in which we live; it enables us to improve the lives of individuals, communities and nations. A science education informs our thinking and becomes an intrinsic part of the habits of our mind which determine each person s engagements and decision-making. A STEM-literate person can think for themselves. They ask critical questions. They can form hypotheses and seek data to confirm or deny them. They see the beauty and complexity in nature and seeks to understand. 7 STEM WORKFORCE IN AUSTRALIA: 2.3 million Science is relevant far beyond the careers that traditionally spring to mind. Increasingly, STEM skills influence ethical, political and environmental decision-making across the country. People with STEM qualifications are the lifeblood of emerging knowledge-based industries such as biotechnology, informational communications technology and advanced manufacturing, and provide competitive advantages to established industries such as agriculture, resources and health care. To secure Australia s economy into the future, the talents of women in STEM are vital. The STEM sector is where Australia s and the world s economic development is going to be in the next two decades and students who graduate with STEM-related skills and expertise will be the very people driving that development in our economy. Strong STEM programs at Toorak College will enable our girls to be the leaders of tomorrow. 8 INTRODUCING THE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY CENTRE The Science and Technology Centre is a learning incubator where curiosity and creativity are shared and ignited throughout the space. 8 / Toorak College / Campaign for the Science and Technology Centre

9 The Science and Technology Centre will foster creative, collaborative and engaging learning, mimicking a real life working environment. Whilst current facilities developed in the 60s provided our students with rich teachings in science, we find ourselves in a time where education is changing. No longer is science curriculum defined by learning facts and figures. Today, classrooms are places of passionate debate, challenging knowledge and small focused discussions. The Science and Technology Centre will be a welcoming environment that will allow students to transform spaces to suit the needs of the learning experience. The Science and Technology Centre will feature: / Collaborative learning spaces / 6 leading edge general, biology, physics and chemistry labs / Entrepreneur pop up space / DIGI Zone for coding and engineering / Large open learning commons with multi-screen and lecture facilities The Science and Technology Centre will encourage students to observe the learning occurring around them in order to be inspired in a highly transparent environment where expert educators in an array of fields are attracted to leading edge facilities and innovators-in-residence are able to model their practice to intrigued students. / Outside science learning courtyard and lab 9 / Toorak College / Campaign for the Science and Technology Centre

13 HOW YOU CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE The proposed Science and Technology Centre is the first capital campaign to be held this millennium with the School s last major project being the creation of the Marjory Williams Sports and Performing Arts centre in the 1980s. It is anticipated that the Science and Technology Centre project will be the largest building project to date in our 143-year history. We are seeking to partner with our community and raise 1.5 million dollars in philanthropic support to enable us to build the Science and Technology Centre for our students, and for future generations. This project will be a partnership of the School, Parents, Collegians, Staff and Friends. A gift to the Toorak College Science and Technology Centre Capital Campaign is an opportunity to help shape and elevate the learning environment for our students.
