Hughes PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY VICE PRESIDENT, INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCMENT June 2004 present Current Responsibilities Over a decade, transformed an underperforming organization into a high-achieving team, measured by philanthropic support to the university, employee retention, alumni participation, external awards, donor satisfaction, and volunteer engagement. Direct a team of 65 people and a budget of $7.5 million, now in support of a $250 million campaign. As an officer of the university, participate in university-wide planning and strategy. Provide leadership and strategic direction to the President, officers of the Board of Trustees, administrative and academic leadership of the university, and development professionals, to lead all activity involved in the development and achievement of philanthropic goals. Known for engagement of principal gift level donors and volunteers, through innovative solicitation and stewardship. Selected Accomplishments Planning Re-established expectations of quality through development of standard operating policies and procedures Supported new university President in the development of a vision statement, mission statement and strategic plan for the university Planned for and launched leadership phase of a comprehensive campaign Executing campaign plan; to date $160 million has been raised. Through each phase, involved staff in the development and evaluation of an annual plan, which was evaluated quarterly. Fundraising Brought philanthropy from an institutional low of $5 million annually to reliably in excess of $20 million pre-campaign, and $40+ million during the campaign. Launched Fueling Innovation, the Campaign for IIT. In campaign s first three years, secured five gifts of $10 million and more and 27 additional gifts of $1 million+. Worked with Advancement Committee of the Board of Trustees, staffed the Chairman of the Board, created Campaign Committee Created tradition of annual Student Gift campaign

Hughes page two Stewardship Created stewardship program with an emphasis on the integrity of internal operating systems and the depth and regularity of external reporting Engaged donors through creativity and personalization, achieving five CASE Awards Executed Impact reporting: individualized annual reports, and magazine profiling donors Launched Philip Danforth Armour Society to recognize donors of $1 million+; achieved CASE award for recognition exhibit. Launched Sawyier Society to recognize faculty and staff donors Created university protocol for signage, standard procedures for recognizing capital donors, and established investiture ceremony tradition. Alumni Relations Rebuilt alumni relations program to a staff of five supporting regular interaction with 65,000+ alumni through mass communication/online tools, volunteer opportunities, and regional/affinity/audiencespecific events. Program is characterized by interaction with students, focused on volunteerism, and tailored to specific audiences. Developed active Alumni Board, focused on strategy of alumni engagement. Launched Velocity Initiative with current students and recent alumni interviewing 5,000 alumni over three years. Launched Tech Traditions, a university-wide student and staff effort to build alumni identity from freshman year. Tailored communications and events toward specific audiences including: 50 th reunion, young families, regional chapters, and affinity groups such as fraternities/sororities, African American Association, and athletes Organizational Development To enhance recruitment and retention, implemented a people first strategy that included: Training: conferences, local early career programs, webinars, consultants Monthly divisional meeting: status toward goals, program updates, featuring a university presentation (faculty/dean, etc.) Annual divisional retreat focused on teamwork Monthly party celebrating work anniversaries and birthdays Personal interaction with entire team holiday party, birthday cards, office hours, frequent personal kudos s/notes, office drop-ins, invitations to attend meetings with university and volunteer leadership. Task forces formed to focus on areas needing improvement Clarity of job descriptions/metrics/path to promotion

Hughes page three ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT, SPECIAL PROJECTS October 2002-May 2004 Conceived, launched, and managed $20 million/two-year pilot campaign to restore historic Ludwig Mies van der Rohe campus facilities; created plan for $100 million+ future campaign. Recruited and managed Mies van der Rohe Society Board of Directors, comprised of prestigious corporate and civic leaders. Developed non-alumni constituency through innovative cultivation opportunities. SMITHSONIAN NATIONAL AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM REGIONAL DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT January 2000-September 2002 Solicited principal gifts in support of $350 million international capital campaign, raising $15 million in gifts of $1 million or more from non-donors. Launched Midwest development program, developing metrics, identifying prospects, and recruiting volunteers. Worked with prestigious nationally regarded Board of Directors, donors, curators, and museum leaders. ILLINOIS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, INSTITUTE OF DESIGN December 1994-December 1999 Co-authored and managed implementation of two strategic plans, resulting in new business development, two capital campaigns, and the restructuring of the college s financial model. Created and directed all revenue-enhancement programs, raising more than $28 million from corporations, foundations, and individuals. Led property acquisition, budget management, construction planning, and relocation of 40,000 square foot facility. Managed day-to-day college operations, including annual $3 million operating budget. DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT, INSTITUTE OF DESIGN October 1991 November 1994 Created first development program for internationally renowned college. Identified prospects, devised creative cultivation opportunities, actively involved faculty and volunteers, and raised more than $4 million in the first three years--with an alumni base of less than BENTLEY COLLEGE SENIOR DEVELOPMENT OFFICER April October 1991 Systematically identified, cultivated, and solicited major gift prospects of $25,000+ for prominent business school in the quiet phase of a major capital campaign.

Hughes Vice President for Institutional Advancement Betsy Hughes has served Illinois Institute of Technology as its chief development officer since Currently leading IIT s Fueling Innovation Campaign for $250 million, Betsy began her development career in After developing her knowledge of the field through one year in the MIT development office, Betsy joined United Way of America and their elite management trainee program. This led to six years as the Campaign Director in two United Ways the Berkshires of Massachusetts and Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Interested in returning to higher education, Betsy served as a Major Gift Officer at Bentley College in Waltham, Massachusetts, before joining IIT for the first time in As the first Director of Development for IIT s prestigious Institute of Design, over 10 years Betsy raised more than $10 million in support of the school which has less than 1,000 alumni. This led to the position of Regional Director of Development for the Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum, which was in a campaign to build the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center. She identified and solicited numerous gifts of more than $1 million, and her efforts culminated with a gift of $10 million. Returning to IIT to launch the university s effort to restore its historic campus known for its modern architecture, Betsy launched the Ludwig Mies van der Rohe Society. Shortly after she was named Vice President of Advancement and has raised more than $250 million in the last ten years. In addition to her fundraising success at IIT, she has launched innovative programs to engage alumni and has received multiple CASE Awards in the areas of events and stewardship. After three decades in the business, Betsy is known to her donors, volunteers, and colleagues as someone who easily shares her passion about the university, clearly communicates the philanthropic opportunities to donors, and listens carefully to the needs and interests of partners and donors alike.

9 October 15, 2015 To the Awards Committee of the Chicago Chapter of AFP: It is an honor for me to write in support of the nomination of Elizabeth Hughes for the Benjamin Franklin Award. Betsy Hughes is a very effective development officer as well as an experienced and recognized manager. I have known her and worked with her in a variety of capacities beginning in, I believe, 1990, when she first came to Illinois Institute of Technology. This has enabled me to follow not only her own career progress, but her continued commitment to her colleagues, and particularly the many young professionals who have had the good fortune to work with and for her. One of the characteristics I admire most in Betsy is her ability to help inexperienced professionals to understand what it will take for them to become successful development officers, alumni relations officers, marketing and communications officers and institutional representatives in general. Betsy tells it like it is; she can deliver the hard news as well as the easy news. This is worth noting. It is a lot easier to congratulate success than to help explain stumbles. She can do both, and then help get her many protégées on the way ambitiously to meet their next challenges. Betsy Hughes is a committed supporter of continuing education. Her people are AFP members and, I am proud to say, she often sponsors them for the programs of the Development Leadership Consortium as well. She pushes them into involvement in the greater advancement community, and supports them once they have taken on expanded civic responsibilities. As a result, her staff members continue to grow, and many have moved on to important and highly responsible positions at other institutions. If one of the characteristics of a Benjamin Franklin Award winner is an uninterrupted commitment to the growth and success of younger advancement officers, Betsy Hughes is a natural.
