4 About the University of Hull Brynmor Jones Library With nearly 2,500 staff, more than 22,000 students and two campuses in Hull and Scarborough, the University of Hull is a major education provider. Steeped in history and character, with a graceful modern twist, we re a university designed for the 21st century. Renowned for our remarkable approach to research, we have a vibrant student population and an enviable team of quality academics. Founded in 1927, we re England s 14th-oldest university. Since then, we ve developed a glowing reputation in research and enterprise. And now, we re looking for ways to improve and develop further. You see, we re focused on going beyond. Going beyond expectation. Going beyond anything you ll find elsewhere. One of the UK s leading business schools, our mission is to promote responsible leadership in a complex world. That s why we believe in being braver, striving further, and never settling for average. With an outstanding record of scholarship and research, you will too. So you ll be as excited as we are by the future potential that lies ahead. We have a fantastic history and a strong reputation for producing world-class research and delivering first-class education to students and graduates. Now it s time to begin our future. Growing stronger with increased strategy and direction, we want you to share our ambition. We re building an international reputation for research, learning and teaching. And we want you to help us shape it. Venn Building Scarborough Campus
5 Vision and Mission We re passionate about creating, shaping and developing a better future. For students, academics and society as a whole. We really are ambitious. We believe in pushing boundaries and going beyond in everything we do in research, in teaching, in life. So what is going beyond? It s a belief that study doesn t stop at the classroom and research isn t confined to a laboratory. Going beyond is about making an impact 20 years into the future. Improving the quality of life through learning, stimulating economic growth, encouraging citizenship in a global community and improving social mobility and justice. It s a determination to exceed expectations and to encourage our students to strive for excellence in life just as you do. We place research at the heart of everything we do. And it s this desire for knowledge, this unquenchable thirst for innovation and this relentless quest for new ideas and original ways of working that makes the future here so exciting. That s why we re investing in it. Because we re determined to be at the leading edge of research today, tomorrow, and for many years to come. Going beyond is about making an impact 20 years into the future. Graduation Day University of Hull And as an anchor institution, we put a big focus on helping in the regional community. The University of Hull provides a valued source of intellectual and cultural leadership, bringing a global outlook to bear on local challenges. Our regional communities benefit from our presence and activities, and we benefit from the opportunities and community engagement. We place a high priority on sustainability too. Driven by our values, and with a strong sense of responsibility for the environment, this is a place where everyone contributes. We set ourselves challenging goals, and know that only by doing things exceptionally well can we achieve our vision of being a university that is ever growing in stature and reputation in the world. To help us achieve this, we re investing heavily in the finest professors, lecturers and researchers in the world. And we re not stopping there. We ve ambitious plans for the future. If you have too join our journey of development and discovery.
6 The views are stunning, the outlook even better. Discover Hull and its surroundings Hull Marina If you re thinking of developing your future with the University of Hull, it s only natural that you ll want to make sure you ve got the very best learning and leisure facilities close by. Well, rest assured, you have. The Deep With the beautiful countryside of Yorkshire on one side and views across the rugged northern coast on the other, our campus is at the very heart of this vibrant riverside city. Hull itself has a rich maritime past, but in recent years has grown beyond all recognition. On the streets of Hull, you ll find a unique balance between old town charm and modern development. Recently, a billion pound regeneration scheme has helped Hull to become one of the most extravagant waterfront locations in the UK. And with house prices significantly below the national average including the affluent market town of Beverley there s never been a better time to live and work in the area. In fact, the Royal Bank of Scotland has recently voted Beverley the best place to live in the UK in an Affordable Affluence study. South Bay, Scarborough Beverley Minster With affordable house prices in picturesque locations, stylish city living, and the growth of continentally inspired café bars and restaurants, Hull really is a remarkable place to be. Princess Quay and Maritime Museum
7 Discover Scarborough and its surroundings South Bay, Scarborough Surrounded by the rugged northern coast, Scarborough is just a stone s throw away from the breathtaking North Yorkshire moors. Overlooking rocky shores and sandy beaches, there are few more exhilarating places to live and work than Scarborough. Scarborough Lighthouse Beyond the first-class facilities on campus, you ll discover a modern town by the sea. Clearly proud of its heritage, the town is now focused on new technologies and future development. Recently named the most enterprising place in Europe, Scarborough is experiencing a renaissance, particularly in the creative industries. In fact, Scarborough is quickly growing a reputation as the broadband capital of Europe with the continent s fastest broadband connection and the first free Wi-Fi seafront and harbour. With superb transport links, you re within commutable distance of the beautiful city of York and the traditional seaside town of Whitby. The cities of London, Manchester and Leeds are also easily accessible via regular train services. And, still a thriving tourist destination, Scarborough has recently re-opened its Open Air Theatre. This is the largest venue of its kind in Europe and hosts events for theatre production, live shows and music for all tastes and ages. South Bay, Scarborough Scarborough Harbour
