Philanthropic Advisor Office of Philanthropic Partnerships Massachusetts Institute of Technology Cambridge, MA Send Nominations or Cover Letter and Resume to: Zena Lum Senior Consultant The mission of MIT is to advance knowledge and educate students in science, technology and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the nation and the world in the 21st century. Introduction Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has been a pillar of research and education for more than 150 years. In the lab and in the field, MIT impacts the world through both the technology developed at the Institute and the people who learn, work and train there. MIT's students, faculty and staff supported by alumni, donors and industry partners are able to turn hands-on research into answers for the world's most pressing problems. MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY PROSPECTUS 1

Ranked as the top university by QS World University Rankings for six years running, the school has produced 91 Nobel laureates, 25 Turing Award winners and six Fields Medalists. This epicenter of exploration and discovery has been the birthplace of transformational technological advancements, including, to name a few: the first chemical synthesis of penicillin and vitamin A; significant contributions to the Human Genome Project; and the development of the GPS. The 26-member Office of Philanthropic Partnerships (OPP) coordinates and leads MIT s principal gifts program. OPP nurtures the Institute s relationships with its most generous individual donors and cultivates and engages potential donors from around the globe who have the capacity to contribute $5 million or more. It develops and implements regional strategies for a set of identified key domestic and global markets, collaborating with senior leaders, faculty and school development officers (SDOs) across the Institute to align its fundraising goals with MIT s priority initiatives and, outside the U.S., with its international academic strategy. The Opportunity: In 2017, MIT publicly launched its $5 billion Campaign for a Better World. OPP is deeply engaged in campaign planning and strategy, currently raising $200-$250 million a year, with the goal of raising $350 million annually by the campaign s conclusion in In partnering with MIT on its search for a Philanthropic Advisor, we are seeking a highly placed frontline officer with a strong record of negotiating complex, transformative gifts. S/He will possess the temperament and intuition to engage a diverse array of internal and external stakeholders who are integral to ensuring a successful close. The Philanthropic Advisor could be a crucial player in developing the Latin American region, one of seven key regions as identified by OPP. The Philanthropic Advisor must be confident and competent on an international stage and have experience building creative pathways to individuals outside the Institute s relatively small alumni base. Candidates must also demonstrate passion, hard work, integrity, creativity, collaboration and commitment to reflect the OPP s culture of philanthropy based on best standard fundraising and operational practices. MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY PROSPECTUS 2

Position Overview Philanthropic Advisor Working as a key member of the MIT principal gifts office, the Philanthropic Advisor will qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward individuals identified as principal gift donors and prospects: those who have given $1,000,000 to MIT during their lives and/or have the potential for making gifts of $5,000,000 and above. This position will manage a select portfolio of principal prospect donor families in Latin America and will effectively work with MIT academic and administrative colleagues, helping to develop meaningful relationships with significant donors often traveling with the President, senior officers and faculty to visit prospects where they live and work. Characteristic Duties: Work effectively with MIT s most generous donors and potential prospects to establish trust and to secure gifts of $5 million and above. Manage consistent and frequent prospect activity "moves" in order to develop a meaningful relationship between the donor and MIT. Strategize, coordinate and communicate complex plans to move principal donors through the various stages of a gift consideration and toward a contribution of significant support for targeted Institute priority programs and initiatives. Counsel Institute officers, including senior administrative and academic staff, on cultivation and solicitation strategies for selected prospects and visits. Essential Skills Required for This Senior Position: Demonstrated experience developing relationships with donors and prospects, negotiating the interests of both the individual donors and the Institute, and securing gift commitments at the level of $5 million and above; Skill in developing unaffiliated (non-alumni) relationships into principal gift conversations where there is an alignment of interests; Strong communication and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal, and the proven ability to develop and negotiate complex relationships and proposals; Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty and staff colleagues; Mature judgment and experience working with complex, goal-driven individuals; Ability to manage one's time well, while being a part of a highly productive office team environment; Ability to travel with and staff the President, senior officers and key faculty in strategic meetings with prospects and donors; MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY PROSPECTUS 3

Serve as a key member of the Philanthropic Partnership's office, participating in strategic discussions and decisions about the overall program, and providing advice and recommendations to the President and VP for Resource Development (RD). Other Qualifications: Bachelor's degree (advanced education desirable); a minimum of seven years of direct fundraising experience; demonstrated ability to deal effectively with the largest benefactors and prospects of the Institute; excellent interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to establish effective working relationships with senior officers, faculty and volunteers; and a proven record of accomplishment in a position requiring independent planning and efficient utilization of time and resources. We seek individuals with well-proven human relations and communications skills and willingness and ability to travel internationally approximately 35%-45% of the time. For a focus on Latin America, international fundraising experience required. Spanish and some Portuguese will be desirable, though not strictly necessary. Office of Philanthropic Partnerships OPP currently is organized into three functions: fundraising; operations; and prospect identification and research, strategy and donor relations. In addition to managing the team, the Executive Director carries a portfolio of approximately 20 strategic prospects. Eleven additional team members carry prospect portfolios of approximately 75 top-rated prospects. Metrics for OPP are based on several qualitative and quantitative measures of performance, assessed as a whole, with the ultimate goal being the number of gifts closed. For FY2018, top goals include closing $250 million-$350 million, raising $50 million-$75 million for capital projects, and expanding the FY2018 pipeline to $700 million-$800 million. To inform and steer its efforts to significantly contribute to the collective fundraising goal, OPP has adopted the following guiding principles: 1. Focus on transformative gifts: a. At least four $100 million+ gifts in the pipeline each year; b. Building the $25 million-$100 million gift pipeline. 2. Focus on MIT Core. 3. Focus on top priority prospects. 4. Grow the prospect pool, targeting new unaffiliated prospects. 5. Leverage internal and external volunteer structures. 6. Focus on strategic and high-impact travel, meetings and events. MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY PROSPECTUS 4

7. Continually re-evaluate priority regions and prospects. 8. Be transparent in communication. 9. Adhere to due process and protocol. Key regions of domestic focus are Boston, California and the Greater New York area; internationally, OPP is focused on Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Arab World, Turkey and Israel. Keeping abreast of political changes around the globe, OPP prioritizes and shifts regions of focus as appropriate. Client Overview The mission of Massachusetts Institute of Technology is to advance knowledge and educate students in science, technology and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the nation and the world in the 21st century. MIT is also driven to bring knowledge to bear on the world s great challenges. The Institute is an independent, coeducational, privately endowed university, organized into five Schools (architecture and planning; engineering; humanities, arts and social sciences; management; and science). It has some 1,000 faculty members, more than 11,000 undergraduate and graduate students and more than 130,000 living alumni. At its founding in 1861, MIT was an educational innovation, a community of hands-on problem solvers in love with fundamental science and eager to make the world a better place. Today, that spirit still guides how MIT educates students on campus and how it shapes new digital learning technologies to make MIT teaching accessible to millions of learners around the world. Current research and education areas include digital learning; nanotechnology; sustainable energy, the environment, climate adaptation and global water and food security; Big Data, cybersecurity, robotics and artificial intelligence; human health, including cancer, HIV, autism, Alzheimer s and dyslexia; biological engineering and CRISPR technology; poverty alleviation; advanced manufacturing; and innovation and entrepreneurship. MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY PROSPECTUS 5

MIT s impact also includes the work of its alumni. One way MIT graduates drive progress is by starting companies that deliver new ideas to the world. A recent study estimates that as of 2014, living MIT alumni have launched more than 30,000 active companies, creating 4.6 million jobs and generating roughly $1.9 trillion in annual revenue. Taken together, this "MIT Nation" is equivalent to the 10th-largest economy in the world. Leadership: Dr. L. Rafael Reif President Since July, 2012, Rafael Reif has served as the 17th President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he is leading MIT s pioneering efforts to help shape the future of higher education. A champion for both fundamental science and MIT s signature style of interdisciplinary, problem-centered research, he is also pursuing an aggressive agenda to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship. In education, his central focus has been the development of the Institute s latest experiments in online learning, MITx and edx, which he spearheaded in his previous role as MIT Provost. As of March, 2018, the open online learning platform edx had engaged more than 15 million unique learners. The final report of his Institute-wide Task Force on the Future of MIT Education spurred rapid adoption of blended learning models in MIT classrooms and the October, 2015 announcement of a MicroMaster s credential from MITx, the Institute s portfolio of massive open online courses. In keeping with MIT s mission to bring knowledge to bear on the world s great challenges, in May, 2014, Dr. Reif launched the MIT Environmental Solutions Initiative, and in October, 2015, Dr. Reif and his leadership team issued MIT s Plan for Action on Climate Change, centered on research, education, campus sustainability and a strategy of industry engagement. To enhance MIT s innovation ecosystem and equip the next generation of innovators to drive their ideas to impact, in October, 2016 Dr. Reif launched The Engine, an accelerator specially geared to help tough tech ventures deliver innovations that address humanity s great challenges. Additional steps include the October, 2013 launch of the MIT Innovation Initiative, the creation of the MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node, a new Minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation and the MIT Sandbox Innovation Fund Program. MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY PROSPECTUS 6

To accelerate research and innovation at the nanoscale, MIT is also constructing MIT.nano, a major new facility at the heart of campus set to open in And because MIT s entrepreneurial ecosystem extends well beyond the campus, Dr. Reif is leading an ambitious, decade-long redevelopment initiative in Kendall Square. On May 6, 2016, Dr. Reif announced the $5 billion MIT Campaign for a Better World. A member of the MIT faculty since 1980, Dr. Reif has served as Director of MIT s Microsystems Technology Laboratories, as associate department head for Electrical Engineering, as head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), and as Provost. An elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, he is the inventor or co-inventor on 13 patents, has edited or coedited five books and has supervised 38 doctoral theses. He received the degree of Ingeniero Eléctrico from Universidad de Carabobo, Valencia, Venezuela and his doctorate in electrical engineering from Stanford University. Learn more about Dr. Reif s leadership. Location Cambridge, MA: The 168-acre campus in Cambridge, MA is positioned on the north side of the Charles River, just north of Boston. With a population of 105,162, it s the fifthlargest city in Massachusetts, and a hub of arts and culture. A smorgasbord of charming bookstores, outdoor cafes, historical landmarks and public art (including a Picasso sculpture right on MIT s campus) line the streets of the college town. Many startups and pioneering companies have a home-base in Cambridge, especially in Kendall Square, which has been dubbed the most innovative square mile on the planet. Kendall is just one in the City of Squares, which also includes the squares of Central, MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY PROSPECTUS 7

Harvard, Porter, Inman and Lechmere. These major street intersection squares act as the main neighborhoods of Cambridge. Beyond MIT, Cambridge is also home to six additional colleges and universities, including Harvard and the Halt International Business School. Latin America was not a principal focus of fundraising in MIT's Office of Resource Development until Muñoz designed and implemented a model to cultivate alumni and unaffiliated prospects in the region. He also created a fundraising presence in continental Europe. In implementing that strategy, Muñoz was directly involved in soliciting and closing more than $50 million in gifts and contributions made by donors who first engaged with the Institute during his tenure. He is also involved in developing MIT's fundraising strategy in California, New York, Texas and Florida. In carrying out these responsibilities, Muñoz has worked in close consultation with the President of MIT and other senior leaders, senior faculty, top volunteers and development colleagues across campus.
