5 Anne Reid introducing Tony Pammer before being inducted as our newest Rotarian with his wife Kim and President Richard at our meeting on the 15 th October 2016 OCTOBER NEWSLETTER BUS FOR ORPHANAGE Thank you for your continued support to our campaign. Did you know???? One billion children live in poverty today million children died in 2013 before they reached the age of 5 OR 30,000 children dying per day. That equals to 1 child dying every 3 seconds, 20 dying every minute or 11 million children dying per year. Those figures are staggering. How oblivious we are to those facts when we see photos of children on the nightly news. However, we CAN do something to help by supporting this campaign. If we can help Tumaini Miles of Smiles by providing the children with a rounded education, we will have achieved a great thing. The bus which we ARE going to give to them, will help to do just that. To continue with Rose s story. Jan Fallon speaking to Rotary on 15 th Oct 2016 Rose was inspired to work hard at school because of the sacrifice her sister had made for her. She knew that one day she would return to the village and help the people there. She didn t know then what she would do but she was confident that she would do something. Through lots of challenges and hard ship, Rose managed to finish high school, then pursued secretarial training before joining an accounting firm where she worked for many years. During that time, the idea of a school grew in Rose s heart and she knew that this was what God had called her to do. It took 20 years before Tumaini Miles of Smiles was born in Rose travelled each and every Friday night from Nairobi to Malava (an 8 hour bus ride) and then back to Nairobi each Sunday, and slowly step by step, Tumaini School was established. It began with 80 children and 5 teachers in a run down, rented building in the village of Kakoi.

6 It was during a weekend helping the children in Kakoi that Rose came across Matrober, an 8 year old who had been sleeping in the sugarcane fields. Her story was pathetic and saddened Rose. She was being mistreated by her step mother and didn t want to go home. Rose came to realise that Matrober s case was not unique, there were many others in the same situation. She had thought that giving a child an education would be the solution to so many hardships. But, how could a child who spent the night in a sugarcane field and slept on an empty stomach, be able to learn and grow stomach, be able to learn and grow stomach, be able to learn and grow. She needed to build an orphanage. Follow more in the next newsletter and follow us on Facebook/busfororphanage and see how you can make a donation if you are inspired by this story Jan and the bus for orphanage team LAST WEEKS MEETING AT THE GOLF CLUB CLUB ASSEMBLY Chair Mara Richards opened the meeting and welcomed everyone. International Director Sandra proposed the International toast to MONTEVIDEO URUGUAY. Secretary Tom read a reply to our toast from Nairobi, Kenya. Vice President Graham Felstead standing in for President Richard, also welcomed everyone and encouraged members to participate in tonights Club Assembly. He introduced Chairperson Mara. Mara asked for reports.:- Melinda Jackson reminded of the combined Dindi Cycle event with Yea and that it was time to start the planning. Secretary Tom advised the invites to our 50 th. Anniversary Dinner had been distributed. Anne Reid attended Yea s hat night with Phil Clancy and said $383:00 was collected from tins. Sandra Sinclair reminded of All Abilities Day at the Secondary College. Rob Chaffe reported good response from local businesses supporting Hat Day with funds raised going to Men s Health. Also reported the Woodies exhibition was a great success. Rob also advised that past Rotarian Rex Tate is very unwell. John Sharwood reminded of the Open Gardens weekend on 22 nd.and 23 rd. October. He handed around the roster for those gate sitting. Also advised a medical advice box available with a very good information booklet. Treasurer Sharon reported on the Swap Meet held last Sunday and said she banked $3600:00 with $606:00 coming from our food kiosk, expenses to come off those figures. Sharon said she would have a financial statement available for next week. David Dimech also reported on the Swap Meet and said some stalls didn t turn up, but we had 50 stalls and some had booked again for next year. Attendances were down, possibly because of the weather. The Club agreed to run the event again Packing up at Swap Meet 1pm 2016

7 next year. David thanked all who helped and especially mentioned our super sales girl Lynda s effort on the Rotary Stall For her 3 Minuter Mara gave us a fun session interspersed with jokes and member involvement - well done Mara!!! PP. Graham took over for the Club forum and mentioned that our newest member Tony Pammer, in his role on a Shire Committee, is looking for a project to help celebrate the Shire s 150 th Anniversary. Rob Chaffe said there are 79 groups within the Shire who could be asked to participate. Rotary could be the catalyst. Maurie Pawsey talked about an Art Gallery for Alexandra and suggested it could be built behind the Library with entry through the Library. Would need a grant to build the building. Graham Felstead suggested a stipend for the President could be appropriate - open for further discussion. He also said the Working with Children Check should be formalised. Anne Reid and John Sharwood spoke on how to involve other groups in the Shires 150 TH celebrations, with the suggestion that it was mainly for the people of Alexandra. David Dimech in his role on the Committee, said it had been a difficult journey to get where they were at present. The celebrations were planned for 4 th March - 13 th March 2017, and some of the activities in the pipeline were a Street party, an Alexandra Ball, a Musical/Art festival, also to improve the Streetscape and Gardens David asked for volunteers to assist in the planning. Sargeant Bob Tate took the floor and fined Bob Flowers for having to go back to school - think he should have learned enough by now.!! Melinda for driving all the way to work at Kinglake and finding no power. John Sharwood for directing cars to an unknown destination at the Swap Meet and David McLaurin to claim his coat he left behind at the Swap Meet. Sarg. Bob got cross fined for rounding up his harem in the Giddy Goat. David Dimech won the raffle. V.P. Graham thanked Mara and the Sargeant and all for attending, and closed the meeting. ROTARY INFORMATION 05 Rotary is based on the premise that there is a broad field of agreement between people of different beliefs and backgrounds. It is also premised upon the idea that action towards a common goal fuses differences into strong service. That is not to say there are no differences of opinion in Rotary. There are many; they are in fact, one of its sources of strength. In joining Rotary, the member accepts a method of doing things which emphasizes the positive and seeks ways to make agreement effective and inclusive. Adapted from Adventures in service by Bob Tate Well done Hat Wearers!!!
