2 Help Us Recruit New Members Have Lunch on Us! Eric Glatzl, P.E., LEED AP Randall Lamb Associates Membership Promotion Chair, ASHRAE is always looking for new and better ways to spread the importance of being a member especially if you work in the HVAC & R industry. But you can help us recruit new members and spread the word of ASHRAE! Are you looking to educate ASHRAE members on your products or services? Table Tops can be purchased at our meetings for $200, contact a Board Member for more information! Since our member-get-a-member was such a success at our November meeting, the Board of Governors has decided to make it a standing membership drive program. In other words, any member bringing a non-member to a regular monthly meeting OR tour and this non-member joins ASHRAE Society and the SD Chapter at the meeting, he or she and you will have the meal on us FREE. It s our way of saying thank you for helping the San Diego Chapter grow. In order to get your free meal(s), come find me, Eric Glatzl Membership Chair, at the sign in desk (I ll be damn glad to meet you ) and I ll take care of you! Remember, in order to get your free meal(s), you must sign up for ASHRAE and give me your check at the meeting. The check shall be made out to ASHRAE and shall be in the amount of $ Filling out the application and sending in your check at a later date will not get you a free meal I m afraid. Please note, no cash or credit cards will be accepted when new members sign up. Checks only. To help you recruit new members, below is a short list of why it is awesome being a member of ASHRAE: Interested in becoming more involved with ASHRAE through Chairing a Committee or becoming an Officer? 12 George (Gene) Maxwell Reid, Jr. (10/06/50 11/17/11) Born George Maxwell Reid, Jr. in Omaha, Nebraska on October 6, 1950, Gene spent his early life in Nebraska and Wyoming. After his parents divorce in the early 1960 s, he and his younger sister lived with their mother in Alexandria, Virginia, and spent summers in Omaha with their father, stepmother and half-brothers. Gene excelled in sports at Groveton High School in Virginia where he was a track star and captain of his wrestling and football teams. He received a full athletic scholarship to Hofstra University in New York where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering. Upon graduating from Hofstra, Gene accepted a sales engineering position with Trane specializing in heat transfer theory, systems design and technical sales. He moved to San Diego in 1973 where he worked in the local Trane office and called on mechanical contractors and engineers. Gene had a very successful career with Trane resulting in being named to the Trane Top Ten Club honoring his professional management, leadership and cooperative support of industry colleagues. He held the position of Sales Manager for several years and in 1992 was promoted to Trane West Region National Accounts Manager. Gene also worked several years for Brian Cox Mechanical in business development and was employed by Claris Energy Group, Inc. at the time of his passing. Gene s love affair with jazz was central to his life. Over the years he attended many jazz concerts on Catalina Island. Several weeks ago he was attending a jazz festival on the island when he severely injured his foot which required him being flown to the Los Angeles area for additional medical attention. Gene had been doing well in his recovery from various foot surgeries over the past 6 weeks or so. While the exact cause of death is still being determined, it is believed that he may have experienced blot clots in the recovery process that could have resulted in a pulmonary embolism. Gene is survived by his father, stepmother, sister, two half-brothers, former wife, his son (age 10) and his daughter (age 13). Submitted by Dave Troyan, Trane ASHRAE San Diego 12

14 CTTC Update (Continued from page 1) From our previous CTTC meeting, Jerry presented briefly the discussion about setting-up an industry forum/panel discussion regarding the current state of design-build deliverables in our market, and how oppressive it is for teams to compete for such projects. Jerry noted that members of Syska who attended the recent DBIA national conference reported that the DBIA is equally concerned with this issue and has now decided to make it one of their key action items going forward. Jerry challenged the CTTC with the idea of hosting our own, independent (of national CTTC), 3-hour technical sessions. For each we can garner 300 PAOE points (up to a maximum of 600). This is an important issue and Jerry would like to see it happen. The action item going forward was to begin to develop ideas of appropriate technical sessions, who the speakers/presenters might be, etc. This type of session would be above and beyond our regular monthly meetings. It s possible there might even be a nominal charge to attend (between $100-$200 per attendee). However, the subject matter must be relevant and intriguing. We discussed the need to lock-in on a DL (Distinguished Lecturer) before the end of the month (November) as there a few assignments remaining. After that, if any are left, they become first-come/first-serve opportunities. Rebecca intends to lock-up Mr. Kishor Khankari (from Syska) for our April 2012 monthly meeting. He is a specialist and PhD in CFD modeling. We had further discussion about the balance of speakers/presentations scheduled for all future meetings ( year). Rebecca has everything but the June meeting locked-up. She fill find that one and present it at our next CTTC meeting. Jerry stated that of the 35 students he is teaching at SDSU, 34 submitted applications (and checks) to become ASHRAE student members. Unfortunately, all applications (and checks) were returned to ASHRAE on 10/03/11, only to be apparently lost. Jerry actually contacted ASHRAE early this morning asking why the student membership applications (submitted 2 months ago) had not yet been processed, only to be told neither the books (on consignment) or the applications had ever been received. Jerry then produced and submitted the FedEx tracking paperwork, signed by an ASHRAE representative. Fortunately, ASHRAE found the books and the checks misplaced in their warehouse (today). They are processing the student membership applications today. We discussed the status of finding a person to serve as the sub-committee Refrigerant chair. The two (2) candidates that had been previously identified are not able to commit to the level members of the CTTC would like, therefore, the search continues. Allen and Jerry are going to put their heads together and pursue this further. We also discussed whether we could sponsor (as ASHRAE) Jerry s students in attending our ASHRAE Christmas party. Jerry wanted candidates to spend only $15-$20 per person. The party committee decided that if students wanted to attend, the cost would simply have to be $95 per person, since this is a fund-raising effort and we would lose ground in our pursuit of ASHRAE Research Promotion dollars. So both Allen and Jerry stepped-up and offered to sponsor 2-students each, depending on how many (from Jerry s class) actually indicate a desire to attend. Jerry will verify the head-count tonight at class. We also discussed (again) sending ASHRAE student members to the 2012 ASHRAE Winter Conference in Chicago, in January We have no candidates who have indicated any interest at this time. Students from Jerry s HVAC class are simply either graduating in December and moving on, or if not, they will be engaged in classes in the spring semester that precludes them being gone for 3-4 days. We had further discussion about maximizing PAOE points and some of the things we need to do/record to make this happen. Many ideas... Now it s just a matter of implementation. Heather pointed-out the upcoming ASHRAE/USGBC conference coming to San Diego in March This close to home, everyone should find a way to attend. Meeting adjourned promptly at 1:00 PM. There will be no CTTC meeting in December The next CTTC meeting will be in January, date to-be-determined, in light of the pending attendance at the ASHRAE Winter meeting in Chicago (Jerry will be attending). To all CTTC members, look for an announcement of a meeting date sometime in December Thank you. ASHRAE San Diego 14
