Greetings fellow ASHRAE followers. National Engineers Week wrapped up last week and culminated with the NEW Awards Banquet at USD on February 25th. Our very own Bruce Brown emceed the event and did a fantastic job! Bruce spent many hours working to represent ASHRAE with the San Diego County Engineering Council helping to plan this fine event. Because of Bruce, Hugh Egan and Cindy Hyatt s collective involvement, the Awards had an ASHRAE emphasis. Our very own past president, Frank Shadpour P.E., received the Dr. Thomas Avolt Kanneman Outstanding Service Award. The Outstanding Engineering Project was awarded to Rady Children s Hospital Acute Care Addition which is the first LEED certified hospital in California. Dr. Subrata Sooby Bhattacharjee from San Diego State University won the Outstanding Engineering Educator Award. All are very deserving of this significant recognition. Congratulations to the award winners! The was also a very interesting presentation by Miriam Goldstein with the Scripps Institute of Oceanography on the Perils of Pacific Plastic Pollution. She discussed the reality of the pollution of plastic in the Pacific and debunked the urban legend of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The reality is that there is a lot of plastic in the ocean consisting of mostly small particles. Sadly, approximately 10% of fish sampled had ingested plastic of some sort. Her three week voyage in the Pacific covered a limited area and more research is needed to understand the impact and magnitude of plastic pollution. Our upcoming Chapter meeting continues the annual tradition of a joint meeting with the Orange Empire Chapter in San Juan Capistrano on March 22 nd (my birthday!). I encourage all of you to ride the bus up (Thanks to our sponsors!) and represent your San Diego Chapter at what promises to be a fine event. The Program topic is VAV System Design will be discussed by past Society President Bill Coad. I had the pleasure of participating in National Engineers Week by speaking at Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Ms. Kaitlin Rosichan s 8 th grade science classes on February 24th. It was very rewarding to talk about engineering and what we do in ASHRAE and to promote science and math as a path to a great career. I went out on a limb and played the ASHRAE Licensed to Chill video and it was received pretty well. If you get the chance to speak to a class or group of people about an ASHRAE related subject, I highly recommend it. We also get rewarded as a Chapter with PAOE points so if you do represent, please let me know so we can take credit for this. (Continued on Page 11)

Help Us Recruit New Members Have Lunch on Us! -Eric Glatzl, P.E., LEED AP Membership Promotion Chair, ASHRAE is always looking for new and better ways to spread the importance of being a member especially if you work in the HVAC & R industry. For those of you reading this article, I do not need to tell you why it is important (and necessary) for you to be members of ASHRAE. But you can help us recruit new members and spread the word of ASHRAE! Since our member-get-a-member was such a success at our November meeting, the Board of Governors has decided to make it a standing membership drive program. In other words, any member bringing a non-member to a regular monthly meeting OR tour and this non-member joins ASHRAE Society and the SD Chapter at the meeting, he or she and you will have the meal on us FREE. It s our way of saying thank you for helping the San Diego Chapter grow. In order to get your free meal(s), come find me, Eric Glatzl Membership Chair, at the sign in desk (I ll be damn glad to meet you ) and I ll take care of you! Remember, in order to get your free meal(s), you must sign up for ASHRAE and give me your check at the meeting. The check shall be made out to ASHRAE and shall be in the amount of $ Filling out the application and sending in your check at a later date will not get you a free meal I m afraid. Please note, no cash or credit cards will be accepted when new members sign up. Checks only. To help you recruit new members, below is a short list of why it is awesome being a member of ASHRAE: 1. Discount on ASHRAE products (books, standards, conferences, etc.) 2. Leadership training and development of professional skills 3. Career services and employment possibilities 4. Continuing education, keeping up with current technology, and access to current HVAC Industry information 5. Networking opportunities and monthly and annual events for technology, employment, and projects 6. A chance to become a chairperson or an officer- to gain an experience that will have value on professional resumes 7. Industry respect through ASHRAE affiliation, and/or volunteer-ship 8. Access to $2.9 million dollars (this year alone) worth of research information in the industry 9. To help make a difference in the engineering world 10. Be a part of a society that makes the world a better place to live in by enhancing the air we breathe, improving workplace environment, and by creating a better quality of life by providing sustainable solutions 11. 9 CTTC Update Gerald D. Hartford, Jr., P.E., LEED AP Syska & Hennessy Group, Inc. At of the Board of Governors' (BOG) meeting, held on February 8, 2011, immediately prior to the regular monthly ASHRAE lunch meeting, it was decided and agreed by the BOG's, that Gerald D. Hartford, Jr., P.E., LEED AP (Jerry) would assume the role of Chairperson of the local CTTC. For those unaware, CTTC stands for the "Chapter Technology Transfer Committee". Since attending the CTTC workshop at the most recent past CRC meeting, held in Reno, NV, August 26-28, 2010, Jerry was inspired to return to the chapter and to assist in the proactive development/operation of a more formal local CTTC. After all, an active committee membership of only four (4) for a chapter of our size, would immediately net the maximum of 100 PAOE points (Presidential Award of Excellence). For your information, our chapter minimum for PAOE points is 450, with par being 850 for Anyway, going forward, it is my goal to create a truly "active" local CTTC. Because organizing chapter monthly programs and technical sessions is a fundamental requirement of the local CTTC, and because the President-Elect is assigned this duty, Dennis Christie is automatically an active member of the CTTC. With Jerry and Dennis, we have two (2) active committee members. So, this Update message is an official call-out to the entire chapter membership seeking equally motivated and proactive members who want to become part of the local CTTC. We are seeking a minimum of two (2) additional motivated and proactive chapter members to become part of the CTTC. We know you exist, so step-up and sign-up! Fundamentally, CTTC is the heart and soul of ASHRAE. Its scope and purpose are described as follows: "This committee shall provide efficient and effective transfer of current and relevant information throughout the HVAC&R industry. The committee shall develop and maintain high quality and readily available tools to enable chapters to offer informative and attractive industry related information and programs to all target segments. The committee shall maintain a committee structure and membership that supports effective and enthusiastic activities by its volunteer members." National CTTC responsibilities/duties include a list of fourteen (14). Local CTTC responsibilities/duties include a list of twenty-three (23). I know what you're thinking --- "oh, no, he's gonna list them all right here, right now". No I am not. You have to join the local CTTC and we will learn about them and exercise those responsibilities/duties together. Remember, I have never before been a local CTTC chairperson, so I'm going to learn my role right alongside the rest of you, those of you who are willing to step-up and commit to being a motivated, enthusiastic and proactive member of the local CTTC. I look forward to you joining Dennis and me as we embark on this new adventure. As motivation, I want to share with you something very personal. When I started college a long-time ago, I had a large poster on my dorm-room wall that showed a hiker with a small backpack, hiking down a misty, foggy trail. The backpack was symbolically small because it contained only early life-lessons, and the trail was foggy because the future was unknown. I continue to live its message each and every day - even today after 34+ years of professional engineering practice - because I sincerely believe we are each growing and learning something new every day of our lives, putting something new into our backpack-of-life. The poster said very simply: "Lord, I'm not sure where I'm going... But I'm on my way." Dear fellow ASHRAE members, please join me on this exciting journey. Take care! ***NOTE: Interested ASHRAE members please submit your name and contact information via to ghartford@syska.com. Thank you. ASHRAE San Diego 9

10 Frank Shadpour was honored as the 2011 recipient of the notorious Dr. Thomas Avolt Kanneman Outstanding Engineering Service Award, presented by the Greater San Diego Engineering Society, which is comprised of about 19 different local engineering groups, like ASHRAE. Frank Shadpour is a distinguished engineer who has served this industry for nearly 30 years. He obtained his educational qualifications at the University of Southern California, earning a Bachelor s degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master s degree from the University of Redlands. He is a registered P.E. in the State of California, a Certified Construction Specifier, a LEED Accredited Professional and a Commissioning Authority; and he is an Engineering Instructor at the University of California, San Diego. Frank strives to become a solutions provider that not only offers outstanding mechanical engineering services for his clients, but also strives to educate and advance the overall quality of the total built environment by empowering his clients with information about new technologies and advancements that bring added value to their projects. To accomplish this ambitious goal, Frank encourages his colleagues, employees, students, and clients to adhere to the professional basis for engineering practices. He strives to keep energy efficiency and environmentally responsible solutions are at the core of his professional activities. Frank finds it imperative to understand current trends and to utilize programs similar to SDG&E's energy incentive programs to deliver outstanding advantages to the clients. Frank teaches comprehensive engineering courses and frequently speaks on topics that enhance the field of engineering. He encourages his students to develop and maintain a strong work ethic and a keen responsibility to society, as well as the engineering profession. Recent courses that Frank has taught at the University of California, San Diego Extension School cover HVAC Systems Design and Control topics, utilizing a text book which he authored. He has been an instructor there since 1987 and continues looking forward to seeing his students excel professionally. Frank is a past president of the San Diego Chapter of ASHRAE and currently serves as the Society s Program Chair of Technical Committee TC1.4, Control Theory and Application. Along with this, Frank also conducts SDG&E workshops and mentors small business owners and employees, engineering interns and other professionals. Frank works toward establishing community involvement programs that demonstrate how the engineering profession can contribute to a better quality of community life. Frank and his company formed SC Engineers & Friends and made a commitment to support the City of Hope in the fight against cancer. That commitment began in December, 2000, when a group of friends and associates held an event to promote awareness of the burden cancer places on families and their desire to lessen that impact as much as humanly possible, especially where that impact touches the lives of children. This effort has grown in support throughout the years and he believes it will continue to do so into the foreseeable future. Annual events raise awareness and provide substantial contributions to this effort through partnerships with various community organizations, like ASHRAE, the San Diego Seekers, and the San Diego Gulls. Past recipients of this support include the American Cancer Society and Alvarado Hospital Cancer Resource Center, in addition to the City of Hope. In addition to his extensive humanitarian efforts, Frank is an ASHRAE Fellow and speaks at numerous engagements for ASHRAE and SDG&E, where he shares his expertise in the industry and casts the vision of the community through company and personal involvement. Frank Shadpour is a true professional and family man. He very graciously accepted his award at San Diego s annual National Engineers Week banquet held February 25, 2011, at the The Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice on the University of San Diego (USD) campus, with approximately 220 engineers, friends and student guests in attendance. -By Verle Williams ASHRAE San Diego 10
