BUILDING A SINGLE VERSION OF TRUTH Versioning in PPDM Tarun Chandrasekhar Director, Data Management Products Neuralog
AGENDA Introductions Importance of Source Need for multiple sources Source Prioritization vs. Versioning Well Header Well Node Directional Surveys Formation Tops, Well Tests, Production Delivery to G&G Projects Summary and Conclusions
WHAT IS SOURCE? The individual, company, state or government agency that provided information R_SOURCE? or BUSINESS_ASSOCIATE? or BOTH?
SOURCE IN PROJECT D.M. Update KB on an IHS well header what is the source of that data? Project 4 Well Site Vendor Partner Project 4 Data Project 3 Well Site Vendor Partner Project 3 Data Project 1 Well Site Vendor Partner Project 1 Data Project 2 Well Site Vendor Partner Project 2 Data If the same well exists in multiple projects and tops were imported from IHS and then different interpreters picked new tops how are the tops sourced? Lock elevation value and protect it from overwrites when importing well headers from Tobin to update lat/longs what is the source now?
SOURCE IN CENTRAL REPOSITORY Update KB on an IHS well header what is the source of that data? Well Site Data Multiple updates to well headers in different projects which one wins? How to handle multiple well locations in different CRS? Vendor Data Repository Project Data Multiple updates from different sources which one wins? Partner Data How to handle multiple sets of directional surveys from multiple sources in different CRS?
SOURCE PRIORITY VS. VERSIONING Well and Well Node Formation Tops Directional Surveys Well Tests Production Logs Records Management SINGLE VERSION OF TRUTH PREFERRED SET THE WHOLE ENCHILADA!

SINGLE VERSION OF TRUTH The WELL table now contains best available data The business rules for roll-up are stored in the database STORED IN WELL table WELL_VERSION table WELL_VERSION table WELL_VERSION table SOURCE COMPOSITE Devon IHS Tobin UWI Well Name Vincent Halo Vincent Halo Vincent V. Halo Operator Devon Devon Devon Well No Datum Elevation Total Depth Surface_Lat Surface_Lon
ROLL UP WELL HEADERS FROM MULTIPLE SOURCES
WELL NODES
VERSIONING WELL NODES Built in support for well location information from multiple sources in multiple CRS (GCS or PCS) Capture source data in source CRS in the WELL_NODE_VERSION table Based on user settings, roll up the preferred source and preferred geodetic datum to WELL_NODE and WELL tables Export and migration tools support re-projecting data when exporting to interpretation systems
MAP PROJECTIONS Map projections display the earth on a developable surface Plane Cone Cylinder Distortion will be a result Shape Azimuth Linear
DATUMS AND ELLIPSOIDS The earth is usually modeled as a ellipsoid. Regional maps frequently employ a datum to better match the area by employing an ellipsoid shift
COMMON ELLIPSOID & DATUMS North American Datum Clarke 1866 European Datum International WGS Datum Tokyo Datum Bessel South American Datum International Arc Datum Clarke 1880
HORIZONTAL DATUMS Many nations established their own datum Standards and procedures vary widely Coordinates from different datums are completely incompatible Relative to Initial Point of Datum Will vary as a function of Ellipsoid parameters
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? Longitude and Latitude are not unique for a given location. Must know the associated datum
WHAT MAGNITUDE OF ERRORS COULD HAPPEN? Wrong geodetic datum: Several hundreds of meters : 100 s m Incorrect ellipsoid: Horizontally: 10 s m Height: s m Wrong map projection: Entirely the wrong projection: s m Partly wrong (i.e. one or more parameters are wrong): s m No geodetic metadata meaningless coordinates Datum Ellipsoid Prime meridian Map Projection
BOTTOM LINE : CHECK THE CRS Failing to account for these differences can create errors of 100 s of meters. A well report from 1951 may have a completely different CRS than one from 2001.

DEVIATION SURVEYS
LOADING WELL DEVIATION SURVEYS 3 basic measurements Azimuth (with respect to a North Reference) Deviation Angle (from vertical) Measured Depth Standards vary for North Reference but some basic rules of thumb: International/Onshore USA True North Offshore USA Grid North
APPLICATION IN WELL DEVIATION SURVEYS Q: What happens if the wrong North Reference is used? A: The well bottom hole location will be in the wrong place! In UTM, the issue is more acute the farther you get from the equator and central meridian.
NORTH REFERENCE Azimuth measurements, such as in a well deviation survey, require a North Reference. North can be referenced to one of the following: True North Direction of the Earth s Northern Geographic Pole Grid North Map North (North Direction of the Y-Axis of a Cartesian Grid) Magnetic North Direction of the Earth s Northern Magnetic Pole
TRUE NORTH Parallel to lines of Longitude
GRID NORTH REFERENCE North direction parallel to Y Axis of map
GRID NORTH REFERENCE - UTM True North Grid North Angle between the two is the Grid Convergence Angle

HANDLING DIRECTIONAL SURVEYS Import vendor and proprietary surveys Tagging imported surveys with the right NORTH_REFERENCE_TYPE, CRS, Type, Source Calculating BH locations from last survey point Spatializing the bore hole paths Bulk process wells
TOPS, TESTS, PRODUCTION
BLENDING DATA FROM MULTIPLE SOURCES Data stored is tagged with the source Client Application respects user preferences while displaying and exporting data
DATA FROM MULTIPLE SOURCES
DATA FROM MULTIPLE SOURCES
WELL LOGS AND RM
WELL LOGS AND RM Support for digital log curves, depth-registered raster logs and unstructured image logs Ability to load, manage and deliver multiple sets of well files using RM
DELIVERY TO G&G PRODUCTS This ensures the data stored and prepped is the best available data for the well Actual data movement is the responsibility of the client application, middleware product or ETL workflows
