ELLE 2nd doll in the Decadent Tea Party Series by DANA
Greetings and welcome to our 2016 summer online classes... the DECADENT TEA PARTY series. In the following months... we will create 4 more beautiful, strong, lavish women attired in all sorts of opulent adornments. You can do them individually, or showcase all in a room box setting. The fun is in the research, planning and purchasing of this new project! **NOTES** 1. On your student web page, are detailed pdfs on the storyline, tips and more. I created these files as printable pages - rather then webpages for those that like to print out and read. 2. If you need basic help with shoe decoration, doll assembly, adding to stand etc... please click the TIPS link on student webpage. 3. Have you started on your LADYBUG yet? Our ELLE has her ladybug on hand... see photo to right! 5. Lastly, after this page, my text is direct and to the point for our foreign speaking students using translators. Mold (Lauren) by Cynthia Howe Painted, dressed, wigged, designed by DANA Elle s online class held July 25th, am and 7pm CST Page 2
PREPERATION 1. Twist 3 pipecleaners together and glue into torso. I put in a squeeze of Aileens Original Tacky glue, and a drop of Zap a gap (gel) superglue into torso hole. THEN spray the end of the pipecleaner with zap a gap kicker and insert pipecleaners into torso hole. (If you have time you can simply insert the pipecleaners/glue into the torso and let set overnight, to avoid having to purchase the other materials) Since she is seated you don t need strength to hold up doll on doll stand. You simply need a *spine* to add padding to resemble a human body shape. **REMEMBER** She is leaning at an angle with one hip jutted outward so when you assemble doll (padding) keep this in mind. 2. Once doll/pipecleaners are dry, take out your body chart (I found mine on Pinterest under drawing/sculpting scale), and indent where her crotch is. BEND. That is where her butt sits on chair. 3. Now bend where her knees are. 4. Finish adding cottonballs, wapping with florist tape or medical wrap around her torso/ pipecleaner armature... until desired body shape is reached. 5. Lastly cut a small rectangle of batiste for tight slip. This should measure from her waist to right above her shoes. Join edges, and gather waist and glue on doll to cover armature. **ARMS are glued in LATER** **I glue my dolls permanently onto the chair Even though no one can lift up and see what is under her skirt I know <G>. Page 3
SKIRT 1. Cut 10 x 4 ½ white silk rectangle. Turn under bottom edge to wrong side and glue. Then join edges and gather waist. Slide on doll, and arrange the bulk of gathers in the front. **HINT**... I like to give a bit of *motion* to my skirts --- folds... so I lightly press into a pleater and then do above. **HINT**... ONLY the very front of this white silk skirt shows. Be sure to put the bulk of gathers in front - so it gives a bit of bulk to skirt for appropriate historic appearance Back Bodice 1. Cut out 1 1/2 x 3 rectangle of printed material for back/sides of torso (bodice). (Your waist might be longer or shorter then mine - depending on how you assembled doll. The main thing is to have back/sides of doll s torso covered) 2. Now handpleat small fold on each side (make a tiny pleat). You want the FRONT of her torso bare - to make a nice smooth line for stomacher design (coming up). TOP and BOTTOM edges will be covered by other pieces - so no need to seal edges. Just make a nice - TIGHT fit. That is your goal. If you need to add a small dab of glue around torso - then press material into it - to hold - that is just fine! Page 4
Overskirt 1. Cut 10 x 5 black print cotton. Turn under bottom edge to wrong side and glue. Then turn under both side edges to wrong side and glue. 2. Hand Pleat (pinning each pleat into place) around waist. Keep bulk on left hip, and smoother down back. Remember she is leaning on right hip. 3. Glue each pleat down flat (do one or two at a time, let dry, then move to next). **HINT** if you are a newbie - simply gather the overskirt at waist, and pin/glue on. Will be a lot easier <G>. Page 5
Bodice Front 1. Piece cut decoration (see to right) out of your screen printed 1/2 circle. 2. Glue on front of doll s torso. I pleated the shoulder/arm part *IN*, and glued to fit nicer. See big red arrow for location. 3. Glue black braid around top edges to finish. 4. Piece cut next part of decoration... Flat End 5. Glue piece of lace behind it - to hide the one sided printing. (Cutting off any excess lace showing) 6. Now glue this around back, shoulder of doll as seen in the photo. DO NOT GLUE down shoulder ends just yet - you will be adding sleeves first. Page 6
RUFF... cut out, gather small piece of tulle and glue/tie around neck. GOLD NAIL POLISH... whenever I wanted to add a bit more sparkle to the pieces I cut out (edge where I cut with scissors)... I dabbed material with gold fingernail polish to hide the raw edges, seal and protect. BELT... I cut a small extra strip of material, fingernail polished it and let dry. Then glued around waist, and let it hang down to make a long belt. Then I glued approx 6 of chain on top of belt. As stated in the beginning ads - I do not carry chain... or provide in kits. I find mine in thrift stores for under a $1. So this is something you will need to provide for kit. To finish off the bodice, cut small piece of printed material, turn top and bottom edges to wrong side and glue to make a finished strip. Glue strip over raw edges of back bodice. Page 7
BEADING This doll took almost 20 hours to do all the beading. I did it in stages... but I suggest you create the entire doll, and then do the beading - to prevent wear and tear on beads coming off. Here are a few hints on the beading I put a dot of glue on material, then PRESS the bead INTO the glue - making a little cushion. **HINT** if you take a toothpick, insert into the nail polish (clear) and get a little blob... and dot it on glitter - you transform glitter into a sparkling rhinestone! When bead/glue is dry, I go over with gold nail polish - to make all metal uniforn in color, then insert a red glitter in center of circle. 2. Lastly I go over top with CLEAR fingernail polish. This helps prevent the beading from falling off dress. 3. Glue circle jewelry findings on TOP of dress where they will be seen. I did not put any in folds, bottom or back of dress. This is where I used the no hole beads if needed to create the design illusion. To be even more decadent--- You can purchase the 3mm daisy beaded spacers from store in Portage, WI. I have included info to right. (or for those that just don t want to put on individual beading more the necessary <G>). Approx 25 jewelry findings are in each kit - the rest are individual beads. Page 8
SLEEVES If you haven t already superglued pipecleaners into your arms, do it now. Then insert pipecleaner into shoulder hole, and cut off excess. 1. Cut 4 square of white silk material. Seal edges (You can use fingernail polish if desired). 2. Gather square tightly into a pouff. 3. Poke hole in bottom and set aside 4. Cut 3 x 1 1/2 rectangle. Turn bottom edge to wrong side and glue. Glue on side edge. Join edges forming tube. Slide on arm. 5. Poke pipecleaner/arm thru hole in pouff. 6. Run stitches thru sleeve to shape as desired. (as in insert needle to other side of sleeve, pull tight, then insert needle down, pull tight etc). 7. Insert arm/sleeve into torso - check design and glue. 8. Now fold down shoulder collar end, and glue to top of sleeve. Glue on any other designs, beading as you desire. She is officially dressed! NOW... time for our FAVORITE part! Wigging...!!! Page 9
WIGGING You are going to LOVE how easy THIS IS! 1. Do a wigging cross (check out my youtube videos for visual feast on how to do this). 2. Lightly lift up front section - spray lightly with hair spray and roll on size 11 knitting needle. 3. Glue down this knitting needle curl to back of head. 4. Lightly mist hair with hairspray, and gently pat into place. Visual - think of yourself playing with cotton candy --- taking a strip and gently patting it into a ball - before you pop it in your mouth. Same kind of careful - touching. 5. Let the hair hang down back. I shaped it to one side. THAT is it! See the visual photos for more indepth help. I hope you enjoyed making her... and shipment on this doll is July lst - to allow everyone to receive her in advance of class! All materials are ordered... and I can t wait to see what you make with her! For now... Happy Creating! DANA Dana@Miniatureart.com I used WAY to long of hair, too hard to curl, and cut off about 1/2 this length. Page 10
