1 Lady Verlie by DANA Marie Antoinette in a teacup Greetings and welcome to our 20 year anniversary doll, Lady Verlie. (We were first published in l989 in the January miniature doll magazine (now defunct) NUTSHELL NEWS). This how to - is more about gluing, and adding pretties with artful draping then hand sewing. It is designed with the beginner in mind, and is easily made from thrift store finds in silk blouses, handkie laces, doilies and of course a pretty tea cup. Plus you can get a head start on the holiday gift ideas! Enjoy, and Happy Creating! Dana@Miniatureart.com Supplies Needed: -miniature porcelain doll -silk material for dress -old lace, various trims, beads and flowers for decoration -viscose for wigging Tools Needed: -small sharp scissors -tweezers -glue and glue dispenser -needle, pins and thread -corsage pins Preparation: 1. Glue tea cup to saucer. Fill inside with styrofoam, and cover with an antique handkie and/or decorations as desired. I used styrofoam because it provided a firm, yet soft surface to pin and gently push doll into to give the position a more realistic look. Next decorate teacup, gluing on lace and or trinkets you may wish.

Doll Assembly: 1. Take a piece of lace netting and glue around leg as shown.

Cut the edge off a piece of pleated material (or cut a simple rectangle from cotton material, turn edge under to wrong side and glue) and join edges. Gather top, slide over doll s waist and glue/pin in folds as desired. Skirt Construction: 1. Cut out 9" x 2 ½" piece of pink silk duponi. Fold in half and gather top edge as shown in photo. Join edges, slide on doll and sew shut. 2. Pin in folds and pleats and drapes. Spray lightly with hairspray to hold. If your doll is fully assembled, be sure to protect face while spraying. Train Construction: 1. Cut out train pattern from two color silks. With right sides together, sew around edge leaving top open. Turn right side out. 2. Glue or sew a slip stitch across the top of train. Gather top section and fold over to (pink) top of train. Glue a bit of lace on for added interest. 3. Now pin train around back of waist and glue or stitch in place.

Overlap edges in back and glue small piece of silk ribbon down back with buttons for pretty finish. Sleeves: 1. Take a pretty edged piece of lace (I used the same as bodice) and simply wrap around arm, overlap edges and glue. If necessary (see through lace), cover pipecleaner with piece of offwhite cotton first, then glue lace on sleeve. Insert arm into torso, position and piece cut a pretty design for a cap sleeve. Repeat for other side. She is now dressed! And the fun part begins! Doing the beading, bows, additional decoration. Ideas for trim including gathering silk ribbon, gluing on pretty miniature flowers, piece cutting more lace, gathering more netting and adding pretty gold jewelry findings for jewelry. You could also add fan for her to hold, or a small book or other miniature accessories. Alrighty! Time for everyone s favorite part... Turn the page for WIGGING!

Wigging: 1. Glue a realistic hairline on dolls head with tacky glue. 2.

Glue a strip from ear to ear. This effectively forms a wigging cross. 4.

Now spray with at least 4!!! light coats of hairspray to get a really solid hold.

**NOTE** in addition, I added a small curl to her temple to soften hairline.

I named her after a great student of mine Verlie Clark (UK).

5 Wigging: 1. Glue a realistic hairline on dolls head with tacky glue. 2. Lay a strip of viscose from nose to neck and gently press into glue. 3. Glue a strip from ear to ear. This effectively forms a wigging cross. 4. When glue is dry, gently comb hair over top of head and gather carefully and TWIST as shown in photo. Pin hair in place (think tall bun) and put dabs of glue in the folds to hold. Now spray with at least 4!!! light coats of hairspray to get a really solid hold. Take out pins and decorate as desired. It REALLY is that easy! **NOTE** in addition, I added a small curl to her temple to soften hairline. On the last page are some larger closeup photos of the doll.
