3 Course outline Varel Engineering Company Ltd (VEC) runs an open/distance learning programme. Course materials consist of electronic study materials and coursework. The coursework does not count towards the award. Tutor support is available from Monday Saturday during working hours. The course is split into 5 main parts: Part 1 covers Health, Safety and Environmental Management in Context Learning from incidents Hazards inherent in oil and gas Risk management techniques used in the oil and gas industries An organisation s documented evidence to provide a convincing and valid argument that a system is adequately safe Part 2 covers Hydrocarbon Process Safety 1 Contract management Process safety management Role and purpose of a permit to work system Key principles of safe shift handover Plant operation and maintenance Start up and shut down Part 3 covers Hydrocarbon Process Safety 2 Failure modes Other types of failure Safety critical equipment Safe containment of hydrocarbons Fire hazards, risks and controls Furnace and boiler operations Part 4 covers Fire Protection and Emergency Response Fire and explosion in the oil and gas industry Emergency response Part 5 covers Logistics and Transport Operations Marine transport Land transport Examination Details The examination comprises of a 2-hour written examination. The written paper consists of one long-answer question and ten short-answer questions. All questions are compulsory. 4 Course Fee The course fee is Kenya Shillings 97,500 + VAT (of KES 15,600) (equivalent of USD 1,200) payable on enrolment which includes NEBOSH exam registration fee, examination sitting fee in Kenya only, course materials and tuition/revision. VEC hold their examinations for the NEBOSH International Technical Certificate in Oil and Gas Operational Safety at the British Council in Nairobi, Kenya. For candidates outside Kenya, NEBOSH allow their examinations to be taken through the British Council provided the office overseas is one that conducts exams. Where a British Council office does not exist, arrangements are made for exams to be taken at suitable educational institutions such as universities, colleges and schools. Candidates are responsible for paying non-kenyan venue invigilation fees locally. Group Training through Distance Learning Group training by distance learning with tutorial support can be arranged on request for the qualification. Candidates would be expected to study the material and complete the coursework provided prior to attendance at the tutorials, which are designed primarily to provide a revision programme and instruction in examination technique. Tutorial programmes can be tailored to local requirements. Payment The application form should be returned with a cheque made payable to Varel Engineering Company Ltd. Payments may also be made by electronic transfer (please contact us for bank details). VAT is charged at the rate of 16% on all courses purchased in Kenya. Candidates sitting for the exams outside Kenya do not pay VAT. CANCELLATIONS No cancellations will be accepted or refunds given once an order has been placed.
