2 time to get busy Many of you have discovered that going Beyond the Page is just as much fun as scrapbooking. What I think is so special about Beyond the Page is you can usually sit down and complete a whole project in a few hours very rarely does this happen with an album as they are usually an ongoing project. Make sure you look out in your local craft store for the Beyond the Page Series III products as all make wonderful keepsakes and gift ideas. What better way to spend these cold, wet winter days than scrapbooking with some friends and creating some of our latest Beyond the Page projects. I have to giggle because on rainy days, my girls automatically think it s a scrapping day. So mum s, if you can turn a blind eye to a little mess we have included a project that your children can do also. Have a look at page 6 for a personalized address book/album for them to store all their best friend s information in. We have ideas for a gorgeous tabbed album and a hanging album that can become special gifts for a number of occasions. With Father s Day coming up you can tell dad how much he means to you with a lace up journal. It s a quick and simple gift idea for him that even the kids could make themselves. And lastly one for yourself. Clean up your scrapping area with a cute embellishment caddy to store some of your bits and pieces in. Got a pile of photos at home ready to scrap? 4 Tabbed Journal Sand off any rough edges. Paint the tabbed pages your desired colors. If you have chosen a lighter shade you may have to give your product 2-3 coats of paint. Set aside and allow to dry. Choose 4 sheets of coordinating patterned or plain paper. You will need to cut the following from each sheet: Two 4 x 6 rectangles (8 rectangles in total) Two 1½ circles (8 circles in total) 4 workshop Issue #2 Beyond the page

5 Ink or distress the edges of the rectangles and circles before you adhere to each piece of wood. In this instance I have used the Shiraz stamp ink pad and gently wiped it around the edges. Adhere your cut out papers to your tabbed pages in a coordinating layout. Work out what photos you would like to place where and mount them on a matching colour paper if required. For that final touch, add some heartfelt journaling or quotes to each page. Rub ons are a great and easy way to express your message. Note: The example of the finished product has used some extra colored coordinating paper for some of the circles and backs of pages. Finally tie your book together with coordinating ribbons and further embellish if desired. The Elegance Collection 5

6 Rectangle Personal Album To begin you will need at least 5-10 photos of your friends. These will need to be cropped to approx. 4.5x5.5cm size. If you don t have photos this size, then you may need to use a photo editing software package on your computer to resize and reprint your photos. Gently sand each piece to remove any rough edges Choose three different colour paints and paint two pieces in each color, remembering to paint both sides. If you have chosen a lighter shade you may have to give your product 2-3 coats of paint. Allow to dry. 6 workshop Issue #2 Beyond the page

7 Choose three coordinating pattern papers and cut out the following from each of them: Three 15.5 x 6cm rectangles (9 total) Three 8.5 x 10cm rectangles (9 total) From one patterned piece cut: One 15.2 x 2cm strip And from another coordinating piece cut: One 15.2 x 2.5cm If you are confident on the computer you can personalize and make your own address labels with any details you would like recorded on them and print them out. The example we have used is able to be downloaded from our website Once you have your address labels cut them into 8 x 8cm squares and mount them with coordinating cardstock x 8.5 cm Mount your photos with pieces of coordinating cardstock cut to 5 x 6 cm Adhere your patterned papers to the wood pieces. Once you have arranged the layout of your photos and address labels, you can adhere these too. Embellish with rubons and ribbons etc as desired. Join your little book together with either a hinged ring or matching colored ribbons. Now the project is ready for your child to fill in all their friend s details! The Playtime Collection 7

8 Embellishment Caddy Gently sand off any rough edges from the wooden pieces The hardest part is working out which pieces you would like to cover and which ones you would like to paint. It is best to give all edges that are exposed a couple of coats of paint before hand, especially the ones you are covering in paper. In this example we have covered the front, middle and back pieces. The two sides are painted. With a brush lightly spread some glue onto the wood piece you wish to cover and adhere the paper to it. With a soft rag wipe over to make sure any air bubbles are out. If you would like a patchwork effect keep adding papers until you are happy with the look. I have used just two different papers on the front and back then chosen a coordinating one for the middle. 8 workshop Issue #2 Beyond the page

9 When the glue is dry turn the wood piece over and with a sharp craft knife trim off any overhanging edges of paper. Add ribbons or embellishments to decorate. In this example we have also covered a Wooden Tag with paper and painted some raw wooden shapes in co-ordinating colours. The final stage is to assemble the caddy again using pva glue to stock together. The Tudor Collection 9

10 Hanging Open Album Remove any rough edges from the wooden pieces by gently sanding them. Paint all pieces the color you have chosen. Depending on the color you have chosen you may have to do a couple of coats. Whilst waiting for the paint to dry, choose a coordinating color and paint your monologue letters. When the rectangle pieces of your project are dry, give them a slightly distressed look by gently sanding around the edges. Choose another coordinating color, in this case we have chosen lime, and gently swipe your brush around the edges of all pieces for further effect. 10 workshop Issue #2 Beyond the page

11 The monologue letters also have been distressed. I have used an emery board to sand these pieces as it can get into the smaller areas that a sanding block won t reach. Layout all your pieces and place your monologue letters and painted shapes in the positions you would like them. If you would like to add photos, a poem or a message do so now as some of your letters or shapes may need to overlap these later. Gently stick down all pieces. Further embellish each piece as desired. I have added some of our new rhinestones to each painted shape for added sparkle. Tie together with ribbon. In this example rather than knotting the ribbons, they have been threaded through and stapled together at the back. The piece that is stapled, is then taped behind the wooden piece so you can t see it from the front. Also, don t forget to tie some ribbon to the top so your finished project can be hung on the wall and enjoyed. The Lone Ranger Collection 11

12 Lace up Journal As with all our wooden pieces it is a great idea to start off by removing any rough edges by gently sanding around each piece. Choose a color and give your pieces 2-3 coats of paint. Don t forget to paint both sides as this project opens up like a book. Once these layers are dry distress or paint around the edges in another color. Instead of painting you may choose to ink your edges. 12 workshop Issue #2 Beyond the page

13 Once dry lay both of the front pieces next to each other, making sure the holes of each piece are on the outsides. If you would like a photo on the front that goes across both pieces you need to work out where you would like it placed as you will need to cut the photo at some point. Cut another rectangle of coordinating paper but instead of matting your photo offset it below. When you re happy with the look, take a sharp scalpel and gently cut the photo where the journal will need to be opened. You can now sand around these pieces and distress as desired. Don t be afraid to sand your photo it adds to the look. Now decorate the front as you wish, here I have painted a raw wooden shape to match and also small wooden letters. Rub ons and embellishments can be added also. Turn these two pieces over and lay on either side of the larger square piece. This is the inside of your journal and can be decorated as desired. Write a message to your dad on one side. In this example the children have each written something. Add those special photos and quotes to the other pieces that truly tell your dad how much he means to you. Once completed you can lay it out and lace up with a co-ordinating ribbon. This can get a bit tricky, so if the kids are doing it, you may need to help out. The Garden Party Collection 13
