Bob Roehrig presented some of the numerous pieces of information that are floating in cyberspace just waiting to be opened up and investigated. Popular sites such as The World of Woodturners, Turning America, Turning newsletters, along with pages of valuable links to other woodturning information. If you were not at the meeting, a helpful handout of woodturning resource links is posted on the PRW web site. Check this out for your future information. Also remember that Marshall s link site is the best place to start. Also, anyone interested in logging onto the World of Woodturners must have an invitation from a current member. Please contact me and I will be more than happy to have the invite sent out to you. Rudy Lopez Demonstration Rudy Lopez will provide a demonstration hosted by the Peace River Woodturners on Saturday, November 17th, 2012 at the Charlotte County Cultural Center, in the Club s regular meeting room, ROOM 34 from 9AM to 4 PM. Topics will include turning a Natural Edge or Cut Rim open bowl, improving Your Tool Techniques, turning a bowl from a crotch and much more. Cost of the demonstration is $30 for PRW Members for the full day seminar, and $35 for other woodturning Club Members or the General Public.. Send payments to the PRW treasurer (Cheri Bauer) or pay at the September meeting.

PRW Demonstration Schedule Safety Shield You may now rest easy when sitting in the front row watching a meeting demonstration thanks to the efforts of Norm Desjardins. 5 5 RECIPROCATING FILE This is how I made my reciprocating file to aid me in carving my woodturnings. I did so with a very low cost. Actually it cost me nothing. If you were to start from scratch it could be done for under $20 (not including shipping) that s the cost of a reciprocating pneumatic saw available from Harbor Freight. Of course a compressed air source is needed. I converted my reciprocating metal saw to accept the files that I have. It works with regular cut files or diamond files quite well. The diamond files cut on the in and out strokes while the regular file cuts on the out going stroke. Both work well. Why in the world Central Pneumatic doesn t make them to do so in the first place bewilders me. (Continued on Page 6) 5

6 To make the conversion: 1. Remove the guide assembly from the tool by unscrewing the two flat head screws located on the bottom that hold the assembly to the housing.

Retain the screws for reassembly. 2. Mark the location of where the hole is to be drilled. Make sure it will line up with the center of the hole in the drive head. 3. Clamp the guide assembly and use a drill press. Drill a dia. (#6 drill) hole through the two side-by-side guide blocks. If your file handle diameters are different than mine, drill a hole diameter to fit your file handle diameter. The two guide blocks could be replaced with a single block and a set of blocks could be made to fit various sets of files. 4. Replace the guide assembly into the tool housing using the original two screws. 5. Insert your file from the front through the newly drilled guide hole and lock in place with the set screws (2) in the drive head. Use a little grease lubricant at the file handle area within the guide blocks. You re set to go. This conversion does not affect the use of the tool as a saw. The tool is advertised to have a 3/8 inch stroke but that is not true. The stroke is closer to ¼ inch. A negative thing about using the tool is its length with the file installed. That can be mitigated somewhat by shortening the handle on the file. It still is awkward with the air supply hose, the tool length and weight. It does work well for me, the price is right, and it beats hand-filling on a big project. Paul Stafford 6

7 7 From the Prez COL-LAB-O-RATE; to work together, especially in some literary, artistic or scientific undertaking; to cooperate. This, according to Webster s Dictionary, is the meaning of the word and certainly it fits the intent of the concept of our club and it s members COLLABORATING on an entry in the 2013 AAW Club Collaborative project. It was suggested by Roger Soper at the August meeting that perhaps the project could revolve around a fishing theme since that would certainly describe fairly accurately the history and current day activities of our neck of the woods. Following that discussion Cheri Bauer found a web site that describes the turning of fishing lures (woodturningonline.com) in its August 2012 report. This may indeed be a good project as it s fairly simple yet could be made as arty as any member would want to create. In the next few days I will call a few members to solicit their agreement to serve on a concept committee and come up with some concrete plans for a collaborative effort of some description and be prepared to report to the club at the November meeting. That will give us all winter and spring to actually create the piece for submission in June of next year. If any member has any brain storms as to a possible theme for our project, in addition to Roger s, please let me know. November is going to be a busy month for the club. ArtSensation is scheduled for TWO days this year, November 2 and 3, and promises to be bigger and better that ever. We will have our same booth space as in prior years and will have a separate demonstration room for a series of demonstrations. Hopefully all members will bring pieces to exhibit in our booth, either for sale or not for sale. Last year we had 19 members participate and we would like to have many more this year. So, start creating your entry pieces soon. We will start accumulating the names of members and the number of pieces to be entered at the September ( ) meeting. For our members who are up north we will contact them by , or they can let us know by , to solicit their interest and support. By the October ( ) meeting we will want to have a fairly concrete fix on the number of participants and the number of pieces so we can start the process of outlining and allocating the booth space. On November 1 st we will have our regular membership meeting and on November 17 we will have our one day demonstration with Rudy Lopez.. Cheri Bauer has already sent out the invitation to the members of the Fort Myers club and in the next few days we will be sending out an invitation to all club members in the various clubs throughout Florida. As you are aware the fee for the demonstration is $30.00 for members of Peace River and $35.00 for non-members and the general public. Again, at the September meeting we will start the process of signing up our members and collecting their fees. Additionally, a Board meeting will be held on September 26 th and November 28 th and of course the annual Christmas party will be on December 13 th. So, lots of things will be happening between now and the end of the year how fast it has gone by!! In the meantime, keep on turning. Jim 7
