Rod Castle s demonstration really hit home on how easy it is to make a modern day pepper or salt grinder. Rod s demonstration will be available on DVD by the March meeting. Jim and Nelson s backs gave out and Fran had to finish the job herself Alan Lacer Demonstration On February 22, 2014 the Sarasota club will host Alan Lacer. Alan is famous for his work with the skew. If you have been intimidated by the use of a skew, this is one demonstration you need to see. Demonstration will be held at: 1051 Racimo Drive Sarasota, Fl Cost is $40 per person(without Lunch) $50.00 with lunch. Time : 9am till 4pm Miniature Birdhouses Don t forget to make a miniature birdhouse for the new display for the Cultural Center gift shop. There are plenty of styles to choose from and they are all really easy to construct. If you have any questions, please ask some of the members that have made them. I personally would love to answer any problems you might experience in making them. The broken hollow form below from the Avellino Samuel Demonstration will be auctioned off at the PRW March meeting. This piece has been expertly repaired by Norm Desjardins. There is a slight vertical crack on the back side of the hollow form. This is a beautiful piece that normally sells for upwards of $$$ in the galleries. 2

6 After visiting many shops over the years, I m always amazed at the ingenuity many of our members come up with to accommodate their turning addictions.

Since Dave does not have a garage or storage building for his shop, he has devised the next best thing.a trailer he has converted into a shop that he brings south to Florida with him.

6 6 After visiting many shops over the years, I m always amazed at the ingenuity many of our members come up with to accommodate their turning addictions. Dave Brethauer is a snow bird from Pennsylvania and lives in a 5th wheel mobile home during his Florida stay. Since Dave does not have a garage or storage building for his shop, he has devised the next best thing.a trailer he has converted into a shop that he brings south to Florida with him. I had the pleasure of visiting Dave s shop a couple of weeks ago and I was really impressed with how much equipment one could organize into a small space. When I say organize, that is the key word. Not only does everything have to fit, but everything must also be extremely stable to take the bumps and sways of traveling on the road. Could you see what his shop would look like if things were sliding, bumping, and tumbling about. Therefore, tools, liquids, wood, and all other items must be secure for the long ride. Dave has done an outstanding job in meeting all these parameters as you can see by the pictures. Great job! 6

This year I took a hands-on class with Jim Smith on making spherical boxes. This was the first time I ever took a handson and I know it will never be the last. I strongly recommend members attending this on a regular basis to take a hands-on. I went to a demonstration from Mike Mahoney on using the McNaughton Center Saver. It was real interesting seeing somebody that uses it almost on a daily basis demo it. I also saw Keith Larrett pour pewter to make collars to attach finials. It was something that I thought was going to be complicated but was extremely simple, it really adds a great touch to your work. The other demonstrators were Jim Smith, Rudy Lopez, Gene Gross, Bonnie Klein, Ashley Harwood, and Cynthia and Michael Gibson. I was surprised that Ashley Harwood has only been turning for 6 years and already has a name for herself throughout the country giving demonstrations at symposiums plus teaching woodturning. 10
