1 Valley Turner Huron Valley Woodturners April A Chapter of the American Association of Woodturners Volume 1, Issue 3 Special points of interest: Pictures, Pictures, Pictures Meet the Turner Crossword Puzzle Wood common names vs. Botanical Fabulous Burls in the Spotlight If you missed the April meeting, you missed a good one. The April meeting evolved around the preparing and processing of burls. The club has funded the cutting of a Red Elm tree (as pictured) as a fund raiser for the club and an opportunity for members to learn all about how to prepare and turn a burl. Jeff Salter headed the demonstation and took the members through the entire process. Jeff is seen in the picture above trimming a burl with a chain saw in preparation for mounting on the lathe. Members then proceeded back inside to see exactly how the burl is setup for different types of turnings. Orientating the cut of burl is the key to cutting. The part of the burl that will be clamped into the chuck should be the heartwood part of the tree. This will give the chuck something to grip tightly onto. Burl is then faced off an the tenon is cut to prepare for gripping in a chuck. Voids in the burl are what Jeff says Part of the game and give the burl it s Character. Jeff proceeded through the steps and began the turning process using step cuts to get the general shape one wants. A bowl shape was chosen and the process was shown from beginning to end. Museum opening a Success The Grand opening of the University of Michigan s Art Museum was a big success. Many club turners were in attendance including the Huron Valley Turners. The Gift shop had $67,000 in donated turnings. The museum has sold almost half of their inventory so far. This you recall was the donated wood that was cut down to make room for the museum building expansion. Many fine turnings from pen s to large hollow forms were for sale within the gift shop. Other Hobbies: Guitar, Snooker, Gardening, and camping Years Being a Turner: 5...part time Favorite Wood: Free is always good, but I do like the exotics...more for flatwork than turning. I mostly turn things form my yard or my family members yard. Favorite Item to Turn: I very seldom turn the same thing twice. I like bowls and vessels with filled voids, lidded or otherwise and vases.and now that it done, my ice cream scoop. Never Tried to Turn: Hats, mobius strips, ornamental items Current Lathe: Delta steel bed and a jet mini First Lathe: Delta Steel bed Turning Tools You Own: The set that came with my lathe. I ve added some scrapers and a bowl gouge. Some tools I ve made.i just made a hollowing system, complete with laser. Most Versatile Turning Tool: I guess it has to be a bowl gouge Favorite Turning Tool: Still looking for it. I use my bowl gouges a lot, but it could be sandpaper too. Least Favorite Turning Tool: The one I am not paying attention to. Favorite Professional Turner You d Like to see Demo: The AAW conventions and club demos are great. I have seen a lot of amazing demos. I don t think I could pick a favorite. I really like Stewart Mortimer s twisted work, Cindy Drozda s finials, Binh Pho s use of color and design, Bonnie Kline s miniature work, David Nittmann s use of mathematical series in his basket-like de- signs. Do You Sell Your Work: Not yet, my daughter keeps taking it home. 3

5 Wood Common Names vs. Botanical Names As to the terms used in this guide, I'm pretty much using 'wood' to mean either the tree or the wood from the tree. Botanical name (or scientific name) means the genus and species of the tree. It's often difficult to pin down a wood as to an exact identity. There are a variety of reasons for this: One wood can have many common names. Many woods have 20 or more commonly used names that change depending where the tree is grown and the local language. Osage Orange (Maclura pomifera) may also be called Bodare Us, Bodark, Bodeck, Bodock, Bois d'arc, Bowwood, Geelhout, Hedge, Hedge Apple, Hedge-plant, Horse Apple, Maclura, Mock Orange, Naranjo Chino, Osage, Osage Apple-tree, Rootwood, Wild Orange or Yellow-wood. The common name is different depending on whether the tree is harvested from the wild or plantation grown. East Indian Rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia) is sometimes called Sonokeling Rosewood when grown on plantations in Indonesia. Many different woods have the same common name: This is also fairly common and can be very confusing. Lacewood from Latin American is (Roupala brasiliensis). Lacewood in North America is Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis). Lacewood in Europe is the London Plane tree (Platanus hybrida). Lacewood in Australia is Silky Oak (Cardwellia sublimis). Leopardwood also from Latin America (Roupala montana) is also often called Lacewood. Some botanical names have changed over time. Snakewood may be listed as (Piratinera guianensis) or (Brosimum guianensis) 5
