1 Y Axis Motor Replacement Replacing the Y axis motor is a process that requires the individual to be somewhat mechanically inclined and can follow detailed instructions. If any of the following steps are ignored or not done as instructed, the outcome can cause more damage to the laser. Tools you will need: 1 complete set of standard allen wrenches. (Long T-handle allen wrenches preferred) 1 pair of needle nosed pliers and a 5/16 socket wrench. 1 Tape Measurer. Removing outter components 1. Unplug the black power cord and the tan serial cable (or ethernet cable if applicable) from the laser. 2. Remove the three screws on the back of the laser. 3. Standing on the left side of the machine, pull the left side from the rear towards you. Then push forward and the side will separate from the machine. 4. Remove the light fixture by unscrewing the 5 screws that attach the light fixture to the laser. If you unplug the light from the control box on the laser, be sure to remember where the light plugs in at when it comes time to put it back. 5. Remove the bottom 2 screws from the back of the keypad assembly 6. Remove the thumbscrew from the front of the keypad assembly

2 7. Unplug the ribbon cable from under the keypad assembly 8. Lift up and set the keypad assembly aside. 9. Unplug the 2 connectors for the Y axis motor 10. Unplug the connector for the limit switch. Y axis motor Limit switch 11. Move the bridge to the center of the table. 12. Loosen the screw at each end of the drive shaft. 13. From the left side of the laser, position the bridge so that the screw that holds the bridge to the left side of the motion system is visible through the hole in the left side. 14. Carefully brace the motion system is place. This is done to prevent it from falling when we remove the left side.

3 15. Remove the screw from the bridge. 16. Remove the screw from the front of the left side. 17. Remove the 3 screws from the rear of the left side. 18. Gently pull the left side slightly forward until it has cleared the U-Channel. Left side U - channel Pull left side forward slightly

4 19. Using a pair of needle nosed pliers, place them between the end of the drive shaft and the left side. 20. Very gently, pry the drive shaft off of the motor shaft. Be sure that you have cleared the U-channel or you will get no results. 21. Once the left side is loose from the drive shaft, carefully remove the left side of the motion system and set it aside. 22. Using the pliers, remove the drive shaft from the right side of the motion system and set it aside. Removing and Replacing the Y Axis Motor Before removing the motor, take a look at the angle in which the motor is placed. If you are following along exactly as instructed, you will see that the wiring of the motor come out of the motor itself at around 4 O'clock. This needs to be exactly how the new motor goes on. If not, chances are that the motor will collide with something as you are putting the left side back on and you will be forced to pull it all back off to fix the problem. Bottom line...pay very close attention to what is being told here.

5 1. Remove the 2 screws from the bearing bracket. Bearing Bracket Remove these screws 2. Gently roll the belt off of the pulley and place out of the way. 3. Unscrew the 4 motor screws but do not pull them out!! 4. Gently lay the motion system of its side. Do not remove the motor screws

6 5. Slowly remove the motor being careful not to pull off the aluminum motor block. 6. Insert the new motor the same as the other motor. 7. Tighten the 4 motor screws. 8. Attach the Bearing bracket. 9. Thread the belt back through the motion system if necessary. The above picture shows the belt attached correctly. If you need further assistance, take a look at the belt on the right side. It is wound the same as the left side. Putting it All Back Together Now that we got the new motor on, lets put the machine back together. This next part is crucial in the movement of the laser. If any of the following steps are avoided, ignored, or not done completely, it could have ill effects of the laser. Bottom line...pay close attention. 1. Carefully reinsert the motion system. Do not push it all the way to the back of the U-channel. 2. Slide the clamps over the ends of the drive shaft.

7 3. Slide the drive shaft over the right side of the motion system. Press it in as far as it will go. 4. Match the left side of the drive shaft with the end of the motor shaft. 5. Carefully and gently, slide the left side of the motion system all the way back against the U-channel. As you do this, press the drive shaft over the motor shaft. 6. Once the drive shaft is in place, DO NOT TIGHTEN IT...we will do that later. 7. Replace the 3 screws from the back of the laser and tighten them.

8 8. Plug the 2 motor connectors back together as well as the limit switch connector. Y axis motor Limit switch 9. Carefully replace the screw that holds the bridge to the left side of the motion system. Be sure to use the washer when replacing this screw. For best results, place the screw on the allen wrench and slide screw and washer through the hold in the left side and on into the bridge. 10. Tighten the screw securely. 11. Replace the front screw on the left side of the motion system but DO NOT TIGHTEN. Squaring the Bridge 1. At the back of the laser, measure the distance from the far right side to the far left side. See the diagram below for exact placement.

9 2. Once you have EXACT the measurement from the back of the laser, Measure the front of the laser in the exact same manner. 3. Once you measure the front of the laser, adjust the front of the left side of the motion system so that the front measurement is EXACTLY the same as the back of the motion system. 4. Once the measurements are the same, tighten the front screw on the left side. 5. After the front screw is tight, re-measure the rear and the front to be sure the distances are IDENTICAL. This is important! 6. Carefully and slowly, move the bridge to the front of the machine. Pay close attention to the belts of the left and right sides. Moving the motion system to quickly can cause the belts to come off. 7. Move the drive shaft from left to right and center it as good as possible. 8. Grasp the bridge and pull it forward. Hold it in place and tighten the 2 drive shaft screws. 9. Once this is complete, move the bridge from front to back a few times to be sure that the motion is smooth. Finishing Up 1. Replace the light fixture using the 5 screws. (Don't forget to plug the light back into the control box if you unplugged it earlier.) 2. Close the lid on the laser.

10 3. Sit the keypad assembly back on the laser. 4. Secure the following: The 2 rear screws. The thumbscrew. As you are tightening the thumbscrew, align the edge of the keypad assembly with the edge of the lid on the laser. We want to be sure that the lid will open and close properly and not come into contact with each other. The ribbon cable. Rear Screws Ribbon Cable Thumb screw 5. Replace the left side and tighten the 3 screws that hold it in place. Holding screws 6. Plug in the black power cord and the tan serial cable (or ethernet cable if applicable). 7. Turn on the laser and see that it initializes correctly.
