Other Info Meetings Why do you come to meetings? To socialize over some snacks? To peruse the library? To win a gift card? To show off that design opportunity that worked out so well? To watch the chips fly? Probably for all of the above. But what kind of meeting would it be if. There was no Demonstrator? What if no one agreed to demonstrate? There was no presentation; no panel discussion; no camera operator. What kind of meeting would it be if. There was no Librarian? Where would the books come from? Who would make them available for your use? What kind of a meeting would it be if. No one brought refreshments to socialize over? No chairs to sit in? What kind of a meeting would it be if. No one else showed up? Where else would you go to show your work to someone that actually understands what it took to make it? What kind of meeting would it be if. No one volunteered to make all of these things happen? What kind of meeting would it be? It would be the meeting that wouldn t be! Pitch in and make it happen! 2
American Association of Woodturners 2015 Symposium Pittsburgh June 25 28, 2015 Jimmy S. Thompson Pulaski, TN I would like to preface this article by saying that I am very appreciative of being selected to receive a scholarship from the TAW, which gave me the opportunity to attend the 29 th annual international woodturning symposium in Pittsburgh, PA. It was a time of exposure to some world renowned woodturners. After a one and a half day trip my wife and I arrived in Pittsburgh and checked into the Omni William Penn Hotel on Thursday afternoon. After getting settled in, we walked to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in a gentle sprinkle of rain to register for the event and check out the venue. A symposium T shirt was purchased so that I could say been there, done that and have a T shirt!! We took a tour of the Instant Gallery, the Empty Bowls project and Beads of Courage display. The display of bowls from Tennessee was very impressive and it was later reported that we had provided over 300 of them which was about a third of the total. Wow!!! Thanks to us Tennessee woodturners. 3 On the agenda for Thursday night was the meet and great reception with hors d oeuvres. After that, Special Interest night activities began and I attended the annual meeting of the Segmented Woodturners led by Pres. Jim Rodgers, which included a slide show of some of the top posted projects of the year. The Segmented Woodturners is an online virtual chapter of the AAW. Segmented turning offers a wide variety of design opportunities. Some subjects discussed at the meeting were membership, glues, techniques, shapes and designs. About 90 people attended the meeting. This year s segmented turning demonstrators were: Jerry Bennett, Craig Kirks and Jason Swanson. The website is Segmented woodturners.org. After the meeting a welcome ride was provided by the shuttle back to the Omni. Friday morning it was time to go to the opening ceremonies. All assembled in the huge ballroom for opening remarks, introductions and announcements, with President Kurt Hertzog presiding. Our own Jeff Brockett, who is on the Board of Directors of the AAW was introduced as the Symposium Chairman. Jeff did a great job with his committee in organizing the symposium. The first rotation started at 8:40 and I chose to attend a demonstration by JoHannes Michelsen of Manchester Center, Vermont, entitled Full Sized Range Rider Hats. He started with a 7 X 16 silver maple blank and turned at about 700 RPM. You could tell that he had done this many times. Some of you may have seen this done before and
maybe even turned a hat, but this was my first and I was fascinated. After roughing out the hat and turning the brim, I watched closely as he reversed the hat, put it on a jam chuck and put a light in the crown to determine the thickness of the wood. One of his main points was to keep your tools sharp and always sharpen before making a finish cut. I could not resist staying there and watching JoHannes from 11:00 12:30 demonstrate turning a Mini Range Rider Hat. He started with a 4 X 8 X 8 blank and turned it the same way but on a smaller scale. According to information from his bio, as of January, 2015, he has made 1801 numbered recorded hats, 2231 mini hats, 497 sub mini hats and 396 micro hats. Very impressive demonstrations and if you are interested he has videos available for sale. After lunch on Friday, from 2:00 3:30, David Ellsworth did a demonstration on turning a Hollow Form From a Log. I had heard of Mr. Ellsworth but had never seen or met him. He is an awesome demonstrator. He systematically progresses as he describes step by step what he is doing as he demonstrates. As you follow his process you can see the big picture, but in every detail you can see why he does what he does and how he does it. Now, if only I can remember only a small portion of it. 4 He advocates and uses a spur drive and live tail stock center to rough out a bowl or hollow form. By using this method, after initial rough turning, the blank can be repositioned easily if need be. After roughing and creating a tenon or spigot on the bottom, he reverses it and mounts it in a chuck for final turning. He uses a jam chuck for finishing the foot. From 3:50 5:20, Mr. Ellsworth demonstrated turning an Open Bowl from a Half Log and then on Saturday morning, I could not resist watching one more demonstration by David Ellsworth from 8:00 9:30, this time Natural Edge Open Bowl from Half a Log. Again we all watched intently. Some of his main points were to plan your project before you start and readjust as need be as you progress. Systematically cut as you turn. As you rough the bottom you can see if the saddle is balanced, if not, reposition the tail stock center. When turning between centers make sure to keep the tailstock tight and your tools sharp. Particularly for natural edge bowls cut wood in the winter when the sap is down, this will usually result in the bark staying on. If you ever get a chance, you need to see David Ellsworth demonstrate. Then from 10:30 12:00 on Saturday, Craig Kirks had a session on Curved Design Elements for Segmented Woodturnings. Mr. Kirks discussed and showed some self built jigs and fixtures for cutting curved and circular elements for segmented designs. It was very informative. I hope I can remember some of it. For more information on this, his website is Craigkirks.net
From 1:30 3:00, I attended a demonstration by Stuart Batty, entitled Perfecting the Art of Cutting. In addition to seeing him use the lathe chisel, he presented the following information on what the hands of a right handed person should be doing: Right Hand Left Hand Assistant 1. Push/pull 1. Weight the front of tools 2. Lift/Drop 2. Position to start 3. Twist (Rt or Left) 3. Prevent skid 4. Swing 4. Braking at end of cut The Banquet and Awards Ceremony held on Saturday night provided all with a delicious dinner and entertainment. A good time was had by all. 5 My last session was on Sunday morning from 8:00 9:30, conducted by Cindy Drozda on the subject of Maximizing Burl Figure. Cindy, a very accomplished turner, has been turning since 1985 and working with burls is only one of her many talents. Some of her points were: The anatomy of the burl. How does the figure work in the material? A burl has a nucleus. Straws run out from the nucleus like a spray or starburst. As burls dry, burls tend to wrinkle up but not oval or crack. Some customers want beauty and are willing to pay for it. Another great part of the symposium was the Trade Show, as much could be learned there. Just about any vendor or product that we have heard of and some I had never heard of was represented there. It was a difficult matter to juggle between going to demonstration sessions and spending adequate time in the Trade Show area. Another notable part of the event was the youth turning sessions. Twenty six Jet lathes were set up in a room and youth rotated in and out as they turned projects with the help of volunteer instructors. Also there were drawings for the youth to win lathes. I was on the elevator with a young man who had turned his first project and had won a Jet lathe. He was very excited. Late Sunday afternoon, we, as well as many other conference attendees, attended the Atlanta Braves and Pittsburgh Pirates game. And, yes, the Braves beat the Pirates.
The 2016 Symposium will be in Atlanta. This will be an excellent opportunity for you to attend an international symposium, since it will be so close to home. I would definitely recommend that you go. I plan to be there. Thanks again for the scholarship and opportunity. I have woodturning fever, as many of you have and I hope I can be helpful to others in the future as many of you have been to me. Happy Turning!!! Jimmy T. 6
Making a Threaded Needle Case by Fred Holder I ve made a number of needle cases over the years and made one for my wife some time back. She was very pleased until she found that when she dug around in her sewing basket, the lid could come off and dump her needles into the basket. Until I obtained the Ray Isles thread chasers, none of my chasers would enter such a small hole as is needed for the needle cases. When I started to make one of these, I tried to use the Nova chuck with the 25mm jaws to hold the pieces while threading. This worked fine for the lid, but I had troubles with the wood moving in the chuck when trying to chase the outside threads for the body of the case. I solved this problem by turning tenons on each end of the blank and gluing on a two inch disk to be grabbed in the 50mm jaws of the Nova chuck as shown below. 7! The blank with two disks glued to the ends for greater stability when threading. Although it is not needed on the lid side, it is easier to set up the pieces for use in the same chuck. This solved the problem of having the body of the needle case move while chasing threads. The next step was to part off the lid and mount it in the chuck for drilling and threading. I thread the lid first whenever possible. In the photo below the lid section is shown in the chuck before drilling.
Making a Threaded Needle Case by Fred Holder 8! The lid is ready to drill with a 7/16 drill to a depth of about 1/2.! Threading the hole in the lid with the inside chasers.
Making a Threaded Needle Case by Fred Holder! Drilling the 5/16 hole to hold the needles. It can be drilled before or after threading. 9 Drill a 7/16 hole in the lid section that is about 1/2 deep. Then round over the front edge of the hole and cut a recess in the bottom of the hole to allow the chaser to cut a clean thread before it would hit the bottom of the hole. When the threads are satisfactory, you are ready to mount the base section for drilling and threading of the tenon that will be threaded.! Threading the tenon on the top of the base section.
! Making a Threaded Needle Case by Fred Holder The sizing of this tenon can be calculated from the information supplied on the illustration on page 6 of this issue. For this case (with a 7/16 recess in the lid section) the tenon should be slightly over 1/2. I found that a 1/2 tenon cutter would cut a tenon just slightly over 1/2 and would work well for sizing the tenon on this project. I cut a tenon about 3/8 long with the tenon cutter and then cut away the excess down to the tenon. I then used a thin parting tool to make a recess at the rear of the tenon and rounded over the front edge, before hand chasing the threads. Incidentally, the threaded section is 16 tpi. On this project, I drilled the 5/16 hole for the needles after I had chased the threads, but it can be drilled just as well before cutting the threads. With the threads cut and the lid fitted to the base section, it is time to final turn the outside of the needle case and put in a few decorations with a point tool or a skew. 10 In this photo, the outside of the needle case has been turned and it is ready to part off just in front of the disk holding it in the chuck.
! Making a Threaded Needle Case by Fred Holder 11 This is the completed needle case. I simply sanded the base smooth after parting off. I like to put a bit of a shallow curve to the outside of the needle case. It seems to me to give it more elegant look than if it is just straight sided. You can also put some sort of decoration on top of the lid, which I do sometimes. However, Mildred likes the smoother top and since she is the one who will be using these things, that is good enough reason to make them smooth.
! Making a Threaded Needle Case by Fred Holder 12! This drawing illustrates how to calculate the size of the tenon for the male threads when the diameter D of the inside threads are known. If you don t have any boxwood or other hard, dense woods, you have two other options. You can use material such as Corian, which threads very well. Or you can cut recesses in both the top and base sections and pour it full of epoxy. The finished needle case with the lid removed.
! Making a Threaded Needle Case by Fred Holder 13 A needle case made from Corian. Corian threads very well. This one was not held with the disks, but only in the 25mm jaws of the chuck. I broke off the threaded tenon once and had to shorten the case. Epoxy also threads very well. I first learned of this technique from Petter Herod of Norway. I ve found that a 3/8 tenon cutter that I have works well to cut the recesses for the epoxy, but make sure your epoxy is mixed thoroughly. It must set up properly to work well.

Upcoming Club Demonstration November 3rd Meeting Featured Symposium demonstrator for October Rudy Lopez - Demonstrator Rudolph Lopez began his relationship with wood over 40 years ago as a craftsman of fine furniture and cabinetry. With an education in drafting and design and many years working as a professional photographer, the transition into woodturning has been a seamless flow into another creative endeavor. 16 I have always had a love of nature and with that came my love of wood. I love everything about wood, rough or smooth it possesses a warm welcome feel with its endless earthy color variations and the swirling grain patterns of burls and knotty woods. I never cease to be amazed by the incredible amount of beauty to be found in it as I create a new turning. My goal in my artistic turning is to bring out this beauty which God and nature has provided and create something that showcases and enhances the natural beauty of the wood for others to enjoy for years to come. His energetic easy-going personality and his ability to explain woodturning techniques in a simple understandable manner has allowed Rudolph to share his skills and enthusiasm for woodturning along with his love of wood through teaching and demonstrating at symposiums, clubs, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and John C. Campbell Folk School as well as his studio in Tampa, Fl. To view more of Rudolph s work please visit his web-site
