LISTING OF END USED CLASSIFICATIONS, DEFINITIONS AND ABBREVIATIONS 1 GENERAL PURPOSE WHEELS (GP WHEELS) Definition: In general Type 1,5 and 7 wheels for offhand grinding of a varied class of materials on double and bench, pedestal and floor stand grinders. Besides the offhand re sharpening of tools of all types general offhand grinding of almost all types of materials including gem stones would be classed in this category. The operative word is offhand meaning that the work is held in the hand whilst grinding. Note: It is important to check other end uses before assigning this end use symbols, however, include any grinding wheels not covered by other end uses. Please also note that many lathe and planer tools are ground offhand but are wet application, i.e. a coolant is used. Where a coolant is in fact used, the end use application is wet tool grinding wheels (WTG WHLS) 2 INTERNAL GRINDING WHEELS (INT WHEELS) Definition: Internal grinding is a name given to a process of finishing the surface of holes. The holes may be straight, cylindrical, tapered, straight and tapered, or formed. The maximum wheel diameter for this classification is 150mm. 6
3 SURFACE GRINDING WHEELS (HORIZONTAL SPINDLE) (SURFH WHEELS) Definition: Wheels are used on machines designed for grinding plain or flat surfaces. The grinding wheel spindle is in a horizontal position. Plain of recessed wheels are used and the grinding face is the periphery of the wheel. Types 1,5 and 7 wheels are generally used. (VERTICAL SPINDLE) (SURFACE WHEELS) Definition: Surface grinding is the grinding of plain or flat surfaces. Vertical is when the grinding wheels spindle is in the vertical position. Type 2 chucked or Type 6 cup wheels are used. 4 CYLINDRICAL GRINDING WHEELS (CYLN WHEELS) Definition: Cylindrical grinding is a basic form of grinding. It is the operation of precision grinding the outside of a place while it is revolving on its axis between centers. The term Cylindrical Grinding is not exactly correct, for the process is used to grind many pieces which are not true cylinders, for example, tapers, cones, eccentrics, the faces of shoulders on shafts, fillets at the bottom of shoulders, and various contours on cylindrical pieces by means of formed wheels. The wheels are mounted between flanges and the grinding face is normally the periphery of the wheel. Some type 11 wheels are also used on this type of grinder known as Universal grinding. 7
5 TOOL ROOM GRINDING WHEELS (TR WHEELS) Definition: Tool room grinding wheels are used on special machines for precision Grinding of broaches, chasers, milling cutters, threading dies, reamers, taps, etc. to generate a keen cutting edge or the exact cutting angles and clearances desired. Note: See Drill Sharpening wheels (DS WHEELS) for the sharpening of drills. 6 CAMSHAFT GRINDING AND CAMSHAFT REGRINDING WHEELS (CAM WHEELS) Definition: Wheels are used for cylindrically grinding both the lobes and bearings of camshafts. 7 CENTRELESS GRINDING WHEELS (CC WHEELS) Definition: Wheels are used on a special form of cylindrical grinder which has a mating wheel known as the feed, regulating or control wheel. 8
8 CENTRELESS FEED, REGULATING OR CONTROL WHEELS (CCR WHEELS) Definition: The feed wheel on a special form of cylindrical grinder used to drive or turn the work piece while the grinding wheel is in operation. 9 BUBBLE WHEELS (BB WHEELS) Show BB wheels as commodity heading, followed by end use classification of wheels. Example BB wheels CYLN Definition: Bubble wheels are resinoid bonded wheels made with alumina bubble. They are generally used for cylindrical portable surface and tool post grinders and are used for the grinding of rubber, wood, plastics, cork, carbon, fiberglass, ceramics, paper and fibreboard, zinc, copper etc. The abrasive is referred to as AB grain. 9
10 ROLL GRINDING WHEELS (RG WHEELS) Definition: Roll grinding is a special form of cylindrical grinding. Small rolls may be ground on cylindrical grinding machines; however, this end use is intended to cover only wheels for use on machines or grinders designed for the grinding of rolls. 11 GEAR GRINDING WHEELS (GEAR WHEELS) Definition: Gear grinding wheels are used on special machines, some of which are capable of generating gears from the solid. 10
12 DISC WHEELS (DISC WHEELS) Definition: Disc wheels are known as either Nut inserted wheels or plate mounted wheels. Nut inserted wheels can be Type F or Type F/VB. Type F is where the nut inserts are moulded into the actual abrasive section of the wheel. Type F/VB is where the nut inserts are moulded into a resinoid abrasive ring which is subsequently cemented onto the usable abrasive section. This is commonly done when vitrified bonded nut inserted disc wheels are made. The most common type of plate mounted wheels are type G and type M. Type G are generally nonreturnable plates 5mm and less in thickness. Type M s are special backs, or adaptor plates as supplied by the customer for remounting. 13 CRANKSHAFT GRINDING WHEELS (CRANK WHEELS) Definition: Crankshaft grinding is a special form of cylindrical grinding using square face, straight sided wheels for grinding the crankpins on new crankshafts. The operation is straight plunge-cut grinding without the usual oscillation of the wheel used when regrinding worn crankshafts. This feature requires that we add a dressing allowance to the thickness measurement of the wheel to permit truing on the sides after mounting. This eliminates side weave before the grinding operation starts. The normal dressing allowance which is added to the thickness measurement is 0.80mm, e.g. customer requires a wheel 40mm thick. Wheel is made 40,80mm thick. After mounting and before starting to grind, customer dresses each side of wheel to reduce face to required 40mm. 11
14 DRILL GRINDING WHEELS (DS WHEELS) Definition: Drill sharpening wheels are wheels used on special machines designed for the accurate re-sharpening of drills. They are generally plate mounted Type G discs wheels or Type 6 cup wheels. 15 MILL STONES (MILL STNS) Definition: Mill stones are used on special machines for grinding chocolate, coffee, cork, mustard, paint, snuff, starch, sugar cane, vegetables, etc. E.g. Morehouse mill stones. 16 GLASS GRINDING WHEELS (GLASS WHEELS) Definition: All wheels used for the grinding of glass. Association of customer s name (usually a glass manufacturer or fabricator of glass products) will aid in determination of this end use. 12
17 SEGMENTAL WHEELS (SEGMENTS) Definition: Segmental wheels are in fact wheels in segmental form. They are used on special machines for surfacing a variety of materials. They can be of either vertical or horizontal spindle design and the operation may vary from precision guillotine knife sharpening to rough snagging operations on castings. 18 KNIFE GRINDING WHEELS (KNF WHEELS) Definition: All wheels used for grinding bread, circular, ensilage, huller, ice skates, lawnmower, knives and reels, paper, planer, shear, sickle, side head, silo, slitter, guillotine, tobacco, veneer, ext. also knives for cloth cutting machines and knives for the shoe trade. 13
19 SAW GUMMING WHEELS (SG WHEELS) Definition: Saw gumming or sharpening wheels are used for sharpening both metal and woodworking saws. The machines used are special, some of which are fully automatic. 20 SNAGGING WHEELS (SNAG WHEELS) Definition: Snagging wheels are generally used for removing undesirable irregularities from the surface of rough castings and defects from steel billets. Castings and billets are ground on swing frame, floor stand, or portable grinding machines depending upon the size and contour of the piece and the amount of material to be removed. 14
21 VALVE REFACER GRINDING WHEELS (VR WHEELS) Definition: Valve re-facer grinding wheels are used on special machines for regrinding valves mainly motor rebuilding shops. 22 TANNING WHEELS (leather shaving machine knives) (TNNG WHEELS) Definition: Tanning wheels are used on leather working machines for resharpening leather splitting and shaving knives. 23 SPECIALITY PRODUCTS (SP) Definition: Specialty products include a group of products that are usually sold under various commodity, headings, in general they are products commonly called sharpening stones, files, bricks, sticks (finished and unfinished), stones, combination stones and hones. This specification does not include valve grinding compound, polishing wheel cements, liquid disc cement, spark plug cleaning compound, etc. 15
