ISSUE November 2017 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE: It s time to thank everyone for his or her contribution to the various Club activities and support during 2017, and I look forward to continued support in Special mention goes to Eric Thorpe for his work in securing a shop for our Xmas sale. All is going well, but we still need more articles for sale and there are still more time slots to be filled if we are to see out the distance to the middle of January. Thanks go to Tony Stephens for organizing the Xmas Dinner and Xmas Raffle and to Rhonda and Neil Bateman for organizing the Xmas Hampers. Gerry Lynch is doing a great job painting the new workshop and all going well it should be ready for use when activities recommence at the end of January. It s pleasing to be able to report that Dom Iervasi is in good condition after the unfortunate incident at woodturning last Friday. From time to time, events such as this, remind us that we need to be more vigilant in regard to the use of safety equipment. Also, at times, we might need to remind a colleague in regard to safe practices. Next year there are four woodturning demonstrations planned which we will share with members of the Eastern Woodturners. I encourage members to take advantage of these opportunities to learn from different expert turners. Reminders about the Okke Huitema Excellence Award and the Harry Oates Encouragement Award were a bit late this year. Still I d like thank and congratulate those who have entered the competitions. Next year we will remind members early in the year to start thinking about these competitions. In 2018, once cleaning and maintenance are completed, the Committee will be looking at disposing of unwanted equipment and replacing it with new equipment. With this in mind, a revision of our Wish List will take place and all Activity Groups are asked to notify our secretary (Lex) of their wishes. Suggestions of where funding might be obtained are also welcome. To all, a Merry Xmas and a Safe and Happy New Year, Hartley

3 SAVINGS ON EXPENDABLES: The club has expendable items (sandpaper, super glue, etc) for sale at cost price. If you are interested in purchasing any of these items see your supervisor. Check the noticeboard for details and cost. LIBRARIAN S CHALLENGES FOR 2017: November - Lookalike Melbourne Cup or cricket Ashes Urn WOODTURNING DEMO BY DONALD KELMO It was a great turn-out for Donald s demo the turning room was almost standing room only. Donald started with a natural edge bowl. Not all went as planned as the spigot sheared off soon into proceedings. After a bit of friendly cajoling from the slightly amused crowd Donald turned a new spigot of larger proportions. All went smoothly from then on and Donald s insights into turning techniques and how he approaches the task was quite enlightening.

4 The morning session finished we all moved in the direction of food and refreshment. We were gifted a banquette of salads, fruits and meat beautifully prepared and presented by Neil lenne, Neil Bateman and John Di Stefano Many thanks for their effort. He just can t help himself!

5 The afternoon session was all about turning tulips quite a chellenging (and may I say intimidating) task. Donald partially turned several tulips handing them over to some of the audience to complete at home, at least one of our lads took hold of one I m sure you are all looking forward to seeing the finished product. Also many thanks to Eastern Wood Turners for organizing the day. MEMBERS BIRTHDAYS FOR NOVEMBER: A very happy birthday during the month of November to the following Members Neil Bateman, Greg Carman, John Di Stefano, Roger Donnelly, Kaye Hatton, Alistair Lowe and Lex Van Sanne. - There are still some birthdays not on our records. If we ve missed you, please let Syd Gordon know. A WORD OF WARNING/WISDOM A club member have expressed concern about using old files as turning tools his concern coming from personal experience. Below is an extract from the Wood Central web site. Old Files They are a readily available source of a hardened steel, there have been a lot of articles published that describe using them, and every gathering of wood turners has at least one "expert" on the subject. This doesn't make them a safe woodturning tool, and I am an advocate of NOT using an old file for making a cutting tool. Yes, we can anneal, harden, and temper them just as we would another piece of high carbon steel. But, the difference is that every groove in the surface of the file is a stress concentration where a crack into the steel is waiting to start. Many of these files may already have hairline cracks that have started to migrate into the steel. We can grind the surfaces, and we can do all sorts of heat treatment to temper the steel to a useable hardness, but it is impossible to remove a hairline crack. We cannot see them, and it only takes one to make it a dangerous tool. The warning should not only be applied to files but also to the use of power hacksaw blades which are just as brittle and prone to snapping. The danger with using these pieces of equipment is they have propensity to SHATTER rather than break this shattering causes shards to fly off in all directions at a velocity that could cause them to penetrate a visor or safety glasses. Solution 27 As this is the difference in age between the two A WORD FROM ALLAN MORCOM Many thanks to the BBQ workers at Bunnings on 5th November. They were all superb helpers and shared around all the jobs...and cleaned up very efficiently as I had to rush off a little early. We made a total of $ profit on the day with about 30 snags and quite a few drinks left over. Hopefully our next BBQ on 27th December will go just as well. Also thanks to Lex who did a small errand and Neil Bateman for the great hint of wrapping the sliced onions in foil and heating them on the BBQ..., I d do that again! Allan Morcom. 8 SHED PROGRESS PIC S (and the Tree Gremlins) The shed is almost complete. Many thanks to all those members who have put in an extraordinary effort to get the shed to this stage there is however still a lot to be done by a small group of people. If you feel that you could contribute please speak up, your input will be greatly appreciated. Also, a special thanks to Jerry for his mammoth effort in painting the walls and floor to say it is appreciated is a gross understatement. Good job Jerry
