January Meeting: A Carve-in Bring your tools and something to carve. This month we ll relax, catch up on everything going on and do some carving. Carving at a meeting is what some carving clubs do. That s why their members join. We should, too, for a couple times a year. The trick for you is to bring something and carve it. Ken Bedel Becomes Chairman of Artistry in Wood Carver of the Month: Don Mertz After years of service, Don Worley passes the Chairmanship torch to Ken Bedel. Artistry in Wood has become a world success, thanks to Don Worley, his predecessors and his team. This is a huge job for anyone to take on. When Ken asks for help, give him everything he needs and then some. We all know Don as a great carver, teacher and a doer carving community. Now, we ll learn a bit more. 2 Bruce Nicholas Receives Ron Ryan Award Tony Perry Takes Over Demos at AIW At The 2013 Artistry in Wood Banquet, Bruce Nicholas was named the 2013 Ron Ryan Award recipient. The award recognizes those who have personally made substantial contributions to the carving community. Two Hundred in AIW Kid s Area Kids build their own projects at The Kid s Area. Western Ohio Woodworkers members prepared kits for the kids and helped them make the projects. At the 2013 Artistry in Wood 200 young people built 378 projects. I am always thrilled to see the kids intensely working on their project. They experience hands-on woodworking. The kids area, organized by Stan Karp, is part of what makes Artistry in Wood a success. Tony will take over from Ken Bedel the demonstrations at Artistry in Wood. Dayton Carvers Guild in The United Rehabilitation Services Telethon Thanks to all of you for your pledges for the URS telethon on December 9th. If you watched the telethon, you saw Ken Bedel present the $5,000 check from Artistry in Wood to URS. Plus Ken, Dick Belcher and Barb Belcher accumulated pledges of about $2,000. If you didn t call in, they might have called you. The did me, at an off-site carving class! URS raised $120,000 and you all helped. 2

3 Mark Your 2014 Calendars Right Now! Dayton Carvers Guild meetings are on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 7 pm except the Pot Luck Dinner in October starts at 6:30 pm and there is no meeting in December because it s too close to the holiday. The Dayton Carvers Guild Monthly Luncheons are at noon on the first Wednesday of each month. However, there is no luncheon in November because that s when we set up at Artistry in Wood. The 2014 Artistry in Wood is November 8 and 9. If you can, help set up the building the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday prior to The Show and tear down the Monday after. DCG membership renewals are due by March. In February we ll remind you. Club officers are elected at the March meeting. Decide to serve now. That Number on Page 1 What s that number buried in the top banner on the cover page? Those who were at the November meeting know. 4 203 Ornaments for Artistry in Wood Ornaments for 2013 Artistry in Wood Jan Feb Mar Ap May June July Aug Sept Oct Nov AIW Goal 2013 was a spectacular year for ornaments carved for the raffle at Artistry in Wood. When finally loaded on the tree, there were 203 of them. In the November newsletter I listed the place winners and United Rehabilitation Services winner but not the Chairman s Award and President s Award. Here are those. Ray Kunz Chairman s Award Lenard Watts President s Choice Artistry in Wood Attendance Surpassed Five Thousand Total attendance at our 2013 show was 5,291. Proceeds from The Visitor Raffle exceeded that of Proceeds from The Banquet Raffle were well above prior years. The Silent Auction brought more than last year. Half of The Silent Auction income goes to those who donated the art and half to Artistry in Wood. The Visitor Raffle, The Banquet Raffle and The Silent Auction are very important to the show s financial viability. Donations given for free magazines were up. Proceeds for The Club Table Raffle were up. Exhibitor and vendor sales were very robust. We don t have their figures but you can assume some records were broken. New Members We heartily welcome you to The Dayton Carvers Guild. It s just been awhile since they renewed. Bill Cox from Bradford Steve Smith who currently lives in Tennessee but is moving to Florida Christena Weber from Dayton The chip carver asked, How do you get down from an elephant? The bird carver snorted, You don t get down from an elephant. You get down from a duck. 4

5 Two Friends in the Carving Community Pass John Kos, 97, a member of The Dayton Carvers Guild, passed away November 5. A donation from The Guild was made to Hospice of Dayton. The Club received a thank you from Hospice. Bob Guge, not a member of The Guild, but a world-renowned bird carver, passed away on November 8. Our members have taken seminars from him and he has been a judge at Artistry in Wood. Our Treasure of Having Instructors A visitor to Artistry in Wood remarked that he wished his home club had more instructors. Having instructors never entered my mind because we have always had so many. Thanks for our blessing of having those instructors. November Meeting 50/50 Charlie Cooke claimed $15.50 which he crammed into his currency clip. Over the 2013 year, the 50/50 drawing made $ for Artistry in Wood. For the newer members, here is what the 50/50 is about. Long ago we sold advertising for AIW s Visitor Program to help fund AIW. That was a laborious chore so, instead, we instituted the 50/50. Buy tickets for $1 each. A winning ticket is drawn. The winner gets half and Artistry in Wood gets half. Sam Slagle runs the 50/50. Artistry in Wood, Our Work Appreciated Hello everyone in the Dayton Carvers Club, We wanted to say hello and thank you to every one involved with the Artistry in Wood. This year was our third year and every time we came we were just overwhelmed - not just because of the size and atmosphere at the show but also because of all involved people. Your efficiency, passion and kindness are amazing, you helped every time with whatever we asked for, and we really appreciated the feeling of being welcomed. Of the photos in the newsletter top banner, the carving of a mystical man slaying a dragon is Fred s. It won Best of Show. Singing hymns and shouting curses, the carvers at Marion s reveled whilst savoring their little pizzas on greasesoaked serving cardboards. We carvers, friends and family congregate at about noon on the first Wednesday of each month in Marion s Piazza. It s at 3443 North Dixie Drive in Dayton. Join us. 5
