1 Dayton Carvers Guild October News from an editor who argues his facts by requiring that contrary evidence be counted as exceptions that prove the rule. Please provide your inputs to Marshall Stearns at or October Meeting: A Carving Club Feast The Annual Pot Luck Dinner and Ornaments Contest On October 23 rd we get to enjoy food and friends. The pot luck starts at 6:30, half an hour early, and we meet in the cafeteria up the hall. Bring your favorite dish and the utensils to serve it. We use only what we bring, so be sure to bring flatware, dish, tumbler, your beverage and napkin for your own use. This is the final meeting prior to Artistry in Wood and at this meeting Jim Moser will collect more ornaments for the tree at Artistry in Wood. The ornaments get raffled off and the proceeds help support Artistry in Wood. Some day I m going to win that raffle. Bring as many ornaments as you possibly can. We have only 25 and need 100! Sign and date them. They will all be displayed on tables where you will vote for your favorites. There will be no Show & Tell. Artistry in Wood November 10 th and 11th Right now, all roads lead to Artistry in Wood. Preparations are charging full steam ahead. For the very few who are not already involved, get involved. Everyone else, get more involved. It s a great endeavor and there is a joy in having done it. Get you carvings organized to enter the big competition. Dayton Carvers Guild members, if you are not an exhibitor, you may enter the competition by means of The Club table. If you do so, you must display that piece at The Club Table and you must serve some time at The Club Table. You may sell your carvings at The Club Table but only when you are there working. No Marion s Luncheon in November Because the regular time for Marion s in November happens during the AIW setup, there will be no luncheon in November. 2 A Spindly Little Sparrow A spindly little sparrow is lying on his back in the middle of the road. A horseman comes by, dismounts and asks the sparrow what he's doing lying upside down like that. "One does what one can!" Discover why some of the richest people in the world are not millionaires, they are volunteers. Volunteers don't just do the work ~ they make it work. Top Ten Reasons to Volunteer 1. When you stay home, you get too many telemarketing calls. 2. Your family could use a break from you. 3. You may need help yourself some day. 4. It's hard to win a game of solitaire. 5. Soap operas all sound alike. 6. If you don't go out each day, you get old. 7. Why let others have all the fun in life? 8. The car needs a workout. 9. Your mom would be proud of you. 10. Who cares about money? With all of the above said, the largest woodcarving show in the USA needs a few good people. Will you be one those who will sign up to help at this year s Artistry In Wood Show. The tasks are easy and better yet, they are fun to do. Bruce Henn needs volunteers to take tickets. Charlie Avery can use some help on The Information Desk. Bridgett Reibeling volunteered to handle Visitor Raffle sales and needs a few more people to sign up. Betty Meehan is again manning The Club Table. Dick & Barb Belcher could also use some more help on The Judging Committee, particularly on Saturday morning to release entries to the exhibitors. Help set up the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday prior to The Show and tear down the Monday after. Volunteers get free admission the day they volunteer. These are a great way to participate and represent Dayton Carvers Guild. Let s show our support for these folks who stepped up to keep Artistry In Wood the premier show in the country. 2

Order Artistry in Wood Banquet Tickets If you want to attend The Saturday Night Artistry in Wood Banquet and, if you are not an exhibitor, get your tickets prior to October 20th. (If you are an exhibitor, you probably ordered your banquet tickets when you reserved your exhibit space.) Tickets are $19 each. Wood Burning on Hope Chests Wanted This came through the web site to Jan Fader: I am interested in finding someone that can wood burn the names on hope chests for my four granddaughters. 4 Donate Magazines to Artistry in Wood Bring your surplus wood carving and woodworking magazines to Artistry in Wood. They are certainly too precious to throw away and you know you will never sell them. So bring them to AIW where a table will be set up where visitors may pick up magazines at no fee but for a suggested donation. The donations help fund Artistry in Wood. You may bring them any time during the show, or, especially, during the Friday setup. September Show & Tell Winner Having the winning ticket stub, Jim Rawlings raided from the treasure box a carving knife. It had been put together by Don Voisard and then finished off by Dick Belcher. Don was a member some time ago and now is in a nursing home. September 50/50 Winner Having the winning ticket stub, Addison Dunmore dumped $14 into his pocket and The Club pocketed the other $14. Special Wood Orders for Lukens Quality Hardwoods If you want wood of unusual sizes for pickup at Artistry in Wood, you may order it ahead of time from Jim and Rita Lukens. Call them at (765) Even if you want to be sure they will bring what you need, you may call them for regular stock. They sometimes will make glue-ups for special sizes. Call them right away. Special Wood Orders for Heinecke Wood Products Similarly, you may place advance orders with Tim Heinecke for delivery at Artistry in Wood. Order by phone at (715) or by using their website, Order special sizes and, also, you may order regular stock so it is packaged for your pick up during The Show. Call them right away. The November Program will be a carve in with a help line. Bring what s not right and get some help. If it s stupid and it works, it s not all that stupid. 4

5 Suggestion for an Ornament Don Stephenson sketched this idea. It s the pink ribbon to bring awareness to breast cancer. You might carve this for The Artistry in Wood Ornaments Raffle. The ribbon would be pink and so would the hat. The October Carvers Luncheon You might not believe this, but twenty one people congregated at Marion s. Well, one was 15 months old. Lots of business got done. For me, getting information and chatting over things are better done at the luncheons than at the meetings. It s a pleasant get together. Bruce Henn to Lead Caricature Carvers of America Dayton Carvers Guild member Bruce Henn will become The President of Caricature Carvers of America when the new year starts. The President presides over the meetings. He is responsible for leadership and administration of the organization. The various committees are coordinated by The President. Bruce currently serves as CCA Vice President and Dayton Carvers Guild member Don Mertz is Secretary. In 2013 the CCA s annual meeting will be in Dayton, occurring the Friday before Artistry in Wood. 5

(Only one entry per person) Bring your project here to Woodcraft of Dayton on Friday, October 26th between 12pm - 6pm. Entry forms will be provided. Judging: Judging will take place on Saturday, October 27th throughout the day. Winners will be announced Sunday, October 28th at 2pm. You do not have to be present to win. There will be valuable prizes for the 3 top items in each category. So, with Labor Day over, it is time to hustle back into the shop and get those prize winning projects completed.
