The July Program: Christmas Ornaments Kickoff, Ornament Carvein and The Report on The International Wood Carvers Congress in Iowa Christmas Ornaments Kickoff For those of us too new to have experienced it, we club members carve ornaments that end up on a Christmas tree at Artistry in Wood. The whole collection gets raffled off. This is one way we generate money to hold Artistry in Wood. Better than that, buying some raffle tickets is a chance to collect work by fellow carvers. Bring some completed ornaments so Jim Moser can start accumulating them. Ornament Carve-in Bring something to carve and we ll have a old-fashioned carve in. An ornament would be great but anything works. This was the tradition of some carving club meetings. The International Wood Carvers Congress We ll get the details of the big competition and maybe some details on phenomenal classes. Buckeye Woodcarvers Roundup is July 27 through July 30 This is a reminder. You can take lots of classes by great instructors for incredibly little money. Focus on one class for the four days or go at any time from one subject to another and then to another. This is a new venture by our fellow carvers. They d like to build it into a substantial annual event. 2 Dayton Carvers Guild Members Win Big in Iowa The International Woodcarvers Congress in Maquoketa, Iowa is now history. One big part of the congress is the competition. It s world-class and our members did very, very well. Sandy Czajka won Second Runner-up to Best of Show. In other words, one of her carvings ranked #3 in the entire competition. 3 Basswood Available The paragraph below was copied from the Hardwood Lumber & More... enews Update. In our June meeting of 2008 Steve Mickley gave us a lecture on finishes. If you attended, you heard which finishes were good and, bluntly, which weren t. Steve is from Hardwood Lumber & More It s located in Milford, near Cincinnati. Their website is We have just received a shipment of quality northern grown basswood out of western New York state. This 8/4 stock exhibits fine texture and very light cream color making it ideal for carving. We apologize for the time it has taken to restock, but we were simply not willing to bring in the coarser textured and less desirable basswood grown in the central and southern states. Do you need a bit of inspiration? Has your carving activity been lagging? If so and if you are not a regular attendee, come to a Dayton Carvers meeting where encouragement and inspiration happen automatically. We will be listing carvings on ebay starting today and for some time from many different carvers and many types and styles of carving. Not only caricatures but bust, animals, ducks etc. Our first carvings include a Dave Dunham, Marv Kaisersatt, Joe Wannamaker, John Burke & 2 ducks by Marlon Downing. The best process is to copy an application from the club web site; find it on page 1. Artistry in Wood, 1984 Version The following appeared in the January-February, 1985 issue of Chip Chats: Dayton Show Fascinates Throngs Any apprehensive feelings some members may have had that moving to a new location would be a disaster were quickly dispelled November as thousands of spectators visited Hara Arena for the fourth annual Artistry In Wood Show sponsored by the Dayton (Ohio) Carvers Guild. Previously the exhibition has been held at Convention Center, downtown Dayton. The highly impressive show won the admiration of visiting carvers as well as the general public. It was a pleasing combination of woodcarving and woodworking, something most of the visitors had never before seen. Judges for the carving portion were: Robert Hawkins, Cincinnati, Ohio; Wayne Holsopple, Bedford, Ohio, and Huber King, Windham, Ohio. Woodworking judges: Roger Hornung, Germantown, Ohio; George Reid and Gary Marcinowski, both of Dayton. The successful show was under the cochairmanship of Ray Kunz and Ron Ryan. Mason Arts Council Seeks Artists for Festival The following was excerpted from The Dayton Daily News: The Mason-Deerfield Arts Alliances Mason Arts Festival will take place on September 18 th at the Mason Municipal Center on Mason-Montgomery Road. The festival features more than 120 artists who showcase mediums such as painting, glass, sculpture, jewelry, woodworking, mixed media, photography, fiber arts and more. The festival is a judged and juried event. Artists interested in participating are required to submit jury materials and a $25 jury fee. Once accepted, artists will pay a $75 booth fee.
