Let s prepare the parts 1From 1fi" or laminated stock, cut the body () to the size listed in the Materials List. Make a copy of the body full-size pattern on page 5.

3 Let s prepare the parts 1From 1fi" or laminated stock, cut the body () to the size listed in the Materials List. Make a copy of the body full-size pattern on page 5. Spray-adhere the pattern to the body. 2Using your bandsaw with a " blade or scrollsaw with a no. 9 blade, form the body s arch by cutting close to the pattern line. Then sand to the line using a 1"-diameter 120-grit sanding drum. Next, using a 2 " Forstner bit in your drill press, bore a Œ"-deep hole in the body, where shown. 3From a 1 12" piece of stock planed to " thick, crosscut two 1"-long pieces for the plates (), saving the cutoff. (To minimize material waste, we resawed stock, and then planed a " resawn piece to ".) For a safe way to plane thin stock, see the Shop Tip, below. rosscut the cutoff in half for use as spacers during assembly. 4From a 1fi 12" piece of stock, crosscut two -long pieces for the pillars (). Then, from a 2 12" piece of stock planed to fi" thick, crosscut two 4 "-long pieces for the top and bottom (). Using a " cove bit in your tablemounted router and a pushblock, rout along the edges on one face of the top and bottom, where shown on rawing 1. Now, from a 2 12" piece of stock planed to " thick, crosscut two 1 "-long pieces for the feet (E). 5Finish-sand all of the parts with 220-grit sandpaper, being careful not to round over any edges. Now assemble the clock 1pply glue to the feet of the arch on the body (). Then place the body faceup on a " spacer on your workbench. Now position and clamp the plates () to the feet, centering the plates side-to-side with a " overhang. Remove glue squeeze-out on all edges. 2fter the glue dries, apply glue to the top of the pillars (). lamp the pillars to the plates (), as shown in Photo. Then apply glue to the bottom of the pillars and top of the body (). Now clamp the top and bottom () in place, as shown in Photo. 3Mark the centerpoints for two mounting holes on the bottom (), where dimensioned on rawing 1a. Then drill the holes, as shown in Photo, and drive the screws. (We used a combination drill bit and countersink to drill the holes.) Now glue and clamp the feet (E) to the bottom, flush with the front and back edges and ends. Sand the edges of the feet flush with the bottom. 4Touch up any areas that need it with 220-grit sandpaper, and remove the dust. pply a stain, if you wish. (We applied Zar Oil-ased Wood Stain no. 116 herry, and then top-coated with a satin lacquer aerosol finish.) 5Finally, install an N-size battery in the clock, set the time, and press the clock into the hole in the body. Now set your masterpiece on a desk where you can admire it by the hour. How, then, do you plane thin material, such as for the desk clock s "-thick plates ()? Simply adhere the jointed face of your stock to a flat -thick carrier board with double-faced tape, as shown at right, and then plane to the needed thickness. You can safely plane to a thickness of " using this technique. Make sure the carrier board is at least as wide as and a couple inches longer than your stock. To remove the planed piece from the carrier, gently pry it off using a putty knife. If the piece resists prying, dissolve the tape adhesive with lacquer thinner.
