2 THE ALPHA LEGION AND THE SHADOW WAR Cut one down one assassin and another pulls the trigger. Destroy one army and two more strike against weaker defences. Commanders go missing in the middle of the night, dragged away to fates worse than death. While confusion reigns, a lone Alpha Legion warrior waits in the shadows for the perfect moment to deal the killing blow. This is what it means to be an Alpha Legion Chaos Space Marine - to use misdirection and sleight of hand to accomplish what thousands of lesser warriors could not. They are trained to be self sufficient, to question everything and to always complete the mission, no matter the cost. In the millennia since the Horus Heresy, much of the Legion s strength has fractured. Though large warbands of these superlative warriors still exist, there are equally as many lone operatives working on long seeded plans of their own scattered throughout the galaxy. Two of these agents have discovered that their plans overlap. Arrogant, prideful, and unwilling to back down, they have declared a Shadow War, the winner of which will be forced to relent and allow the other to develop their goals without interference. A Shadow War is no conventional military engagement. It is a contest of wills between two Alpha Legionnaires and can range from a simple game of Regicide to the manipulation of a sector wide engagement. In this instance the planet of Eskabar has been chosen as their playground and whoever conquers it first will be declared the victor. There is only one rule. They may not take to the field of battle themselves and may act only through proxies. As a result, each commander has amassed a series of allies he believes he can lead to victory in order to humiliate his opponent. You will play the role of one of these surrogate armies at this weekend and must do everything in your power to bring ruin to your enemies and success to your leader. DOUBLES CAMPAIGN WEEKENDS Welcome to the event pack for this Doubles Campaign Weekend. Even if you are familiar with the format of our Campaign weekends, or if you have never attended one before it s worth reading this section thoroughly. team of two to attend the event and this will be how you play your games - as a pair. Each of you brings an army of your own and with this in hand, you will play back to back with your stalwart ally against other teams of two players to try and achieve your missions. This is a story driven event, and in fact, winning your games in the traditional sense has no impact on the results of the weekend. This is done on purpose of course, we want everyone to just relax and focus on having those really memorable moments that make games of Warhammer 40,000 so much fun. For those of you who have attended one before, then you will need to be aware that this weekend will have an extra touch - a devious Alpha Legion secret, hidden for centuries, waiting to be revealed lies hidden in clues and information you can discover over the weekend by achieving certain objectives in your games. If this sounds like it s for you and a friend, read on and discover what awaits. EVENT ESSENTIALS Date: 16 & 17th April 2016 System: Warhammer 40,000 Army Size/Army Selection: Each player brings an army of up to 1010 points using either the Battle Forged or Unbound method. Note that you do not have to use only one army list all weekend, and are free to swap from game to game. Number of games: 5 Scenarios in use: Maelstrom of War and unique missions on the day. Publications in use: All Warhammer 40,000 publications from Games Workshop, including Black Library, White Dwarf and Forge World (excluding Horus Heresy publications). Additional: All miniatures in your collection must be produced by Games Workshop and be fully assembled, painted and based. Each model must fully represent what you have presented on your army lists. A Note on Painting and Basing: At registration we will ask you if your army is fully painted and based. If it isn t don t panic! We will do our best to give you the time and space you need to get your models finished before your first game. As we don t allow anyone to play with unpainted or unbased models, but we understand that life gets in the way sometimes, we will do our best to help you get them up to standard. So what is a Doubles Campaign Weekend? Well in short, we are going to play five unique games of Warhammer 40,000 to tell the story of a struggle between two forces, in this instance two Alpha Legionnaires. The results of the games decide what direction the plot takes and at the end one faction is declared victorious and the rewards are heaped upon them. The reason we call it a Doubles Campaign Weekend is because each ticket grants entry for a

3 THE FACTIONS: Each player (not team) will have to sign up to a Faction in secret at the start of the weekend. Once you have chosen your side you will fight on their behalf all weekend. Note that this means you may be in the opposing Faction to your teammate. This is perfectly fine, and just as the Alpha Legion like it - you can t have too many secrets. You will also get the opportunity at the end of the weekend to change sides. If you do, all your results will count towards your new Faction. Of course, you have to make the final choice before the results are totalled up so choose carefully! FACTION MASTER KORMUS HEXLO: Hexlo is an Alpha Legionnaire born and bred. A master of his Legion s methods of warfare, he has perfected the cut and thrust of this sinister art in the long years following the fall of his Primarch. Hexlo believes that ultimately the decision to join Horus was mistake and so has avoided the fell touch of the ruinous powers as best he can, not wishing to be corrupted and driven insane like so many of his brothers. Even ten thousand years after the events that led him to this fate, he still tries to carry out the last order of his Primarch. FACTION MASTER - KOYN JANKUS: Koyn Jankus is an Alpha Legionnaire of a more modern time, having been brought into the Hydra s embrace a few hundred years ago. A genius through and through, his victories on behalf of his lord and master led him to grow powerful beyond his years. After repeated assassination and other, less subtle attempts on his life, Jankus decided that enough was enough and declared war on his own brothers. The first to fall were his immediate superiors, and before long he was in charge of an entire warband of killers. Shortly after this, his hubris led him to the worship of the Chaos Gods, and not long after that he became a powerful Chaos Lord, intent only on the corruption and eventual destruction of the Imperium. His goals in this Campaign are plain - push Hexlo aside and carry on his mission to subvert and mete out retribution to the Imperium at any cost. Nonetheless, it is obvious to any that this is merely a cover, a ruse to obscure some other hidden agenda. This vital information will be revealed only at the weekend to those who swear loyalty to him and the Dark Gods. The enemy cannot know of Koyn s true plans, or they will be unraveled in short order. Hexlo s objectives are twofold. The first is to win the Shadow War and prove that the corrupting power of Chaos is anathema to carefully laid plans and his Legions style of war. The second is a secret that he will reveal only in person to whoever signs up to his Faction on the day of the event. So if you want to know more, be sure and get that ticket!

4 THE SHADOW WAR - HOW DO YOU WIN? A Shadow War is not for the faint of heart. All the normal horrors of conventional warfare exist and in addition there is an underlying seam of intrigue, politics and murder. To survive such a war a team must be ruthless, cunning, and merciless - traits exemplified by the Alpha Legion. (bear in mind that shouldn t extend to conduct on the gaming table against real people of course) Each game your team plays over the weekend will be a part of the Shadow War for Eskabar. On the surface you are playing a standard Maelstrom of War game (page 128 of Warhammer 40,000 The Rules). However, each Faction will have an Umbra Directive, a secret mission which their Faction Leader wants you to carry out at all costs, even if it means losing the game in the process! This mission will be pretty tricky to accomplish (and a true son of Alpharius would have it no other way) so there will be an award for whoever manages to achieve all five over the weekend! THE HIDDEN SECRET The Alpha Legion are famous for having plans with plans - agendas that can date back centuries which a mortal mind would have difficulty tracking. In honour of this, we will be revealing a secret this weekend that you will have to figure out by yourself! We will hide clues all over Warhammer World (no hints as to where) and the more you discover the more information you will have to try and guess the secret. We will give every player the opportunity to write down what they think is the answer, and there will be a fine reward for any who get it right. In addition, achieving your Umbra Objective will force one of the enemy team members to reveal the secret clue they will have been given at the start of the weekend. If you can gather enough clues and correctly guess the hidden secret of the campaign for your Faction, then you will receive your just rewards. It s a great way to acknowledge a really fun game, opponents with whom you had a great rapport, or maybe it was just that their army looked fantastic. Votes are taken at the end of the weekend, so please show your appreciation of your favourite opponents. Whichever team earns the most Favourite Game votes will receive the I am Alpharius award at the Award Ceremony.

5 OTHER ACTIVITIES DURING THE EVENT LEGENDS PAINTING COMPETITIONS The Legends Painting competition gives you the chance to show off your skills with single models and units rather than with whole armies. Simply enter the relevant category when it s open; once all the entries are in, we will ask all the players to vote for their favourites. The player that earns the most votes in each category will win the relevant prize. (Please note: only miniatures from one of your armies may be entered into this competition). Hero of Legend: All types of Infantry, Cavalry, Bikes and Jetbikes Beast of Legend: Monstrous Creatures, Flying Monstrous Creatures Engine of Legend: All vehicles and Artillery. Company of Legend: Any unit of 5 or less Infantry or cavalry on 40mm bases or smaller or 3 or less Cavalry, Bikes, Jetbikes or Infantry on 50mm bases or larger. THE BEST ARMY COMPETITION It s an honour for any team to have their army nominated for the Best Army competition. Make sure you show your appreciation by voting for your favourite collection from those selected during Sunday lunch time. The team who receives the most number of votes will receive the Best Army award. AWARDS I am Alpharius - The team from each Faction with the most Favourite Game Votes will receive this award. Shadowkings - Each member of the winning Faction will receive this award. The Legends - These awards go to the players with the most votes from each category (detailed above). The Best Army - This award goes to the team with the most votes from the Best Army competition. The Harrowmaster - This award goes to the team that has the highest score when we multiply their Victory Points by their Favourite Game Votes from the weekend. Note that if this is the same team that wins the I am Alpharius award then we will give to the next highest scoring team instead. A Head of the Hydra - This award goes to any team that manages to achieve all five of their Umbra Directives. The Omega - This award will go to the player (or team) who can tell us of the most heinous act of bad luck from the weekend. Naturally, the team can simply brush it off as being all part of the master plan The Master of Secrets - Unbeknownst to either Faction Master, a hidden agenda lies in wait at the weekend. If you can guess the secret then this rewards shall be yours.
