2 Welcome Greetings, master Hobbits, and welcome to the pack for the much-awaited return of the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game Grand Tournament. With a rich history of mixing friendly competition with camaraderie and promising to play host to some incredible armies, the Grand Tournament is a true test of your skills of generalship, tactics, army design and strategy. The title of The Champion of Middle-earth for 2018 will be bestowed upon the winner of the Grand Tournament; have you got what it takes? Event Essentials Date: 24th 25th February 2018 Number of Games: 6 Army Size: Each player will need each of the following: 1 x fully painted and based army of no more than 700 points of Good models 1 x fully painted and based army of no more than 700 points of Evil models Army Selection: Use the Choosing An Army guide on page of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey rules manual. See Mustering your Forces section later. Army List: You will need to hand in printed versions of both of your army lists when you register at the event along with a copy for each of your opponents. Your armies cannot change throughout the weekend. Additional: All models in your collection must be comprised entirely of Citadel and/ or Forge World miniatures and be fully assembled, painted and based. Each model must fully represent what you have presented on your army list, including armour, weapon options, mounts, banners etc. Scenarios in Use: New Points Match scenarios (made available nearer to the event) Table Size: 4 x4 Food: Included in the ticket price is a freshly cooked lunch in our restaurant on both days. All dietary requirements catered for, and there will be a varied menu on offer. Attendees from the Shire may be glad to hear that Bugman s Bar can provide second breakfast, elevenses, afternoon tea or supper upon request, at very reasonable prices. Registration I m looking for someone to share in an adventure. - Gandalf the Grey When you arrive at Warhammer World on Saturday morning, you will need to register with the Events Team in Bugman s Bar. All we will need is your name and a visible copy of your ticket (whether it is printed out or displayed on a phone or tablet). We will give you a record card and a name badge keep hold of these over the weekend. It s also a great chance to ask us any questions you might have about the weekend; we re happy to have a chat about anything you may need to know. You will also need to hand in a copy of your army list when you register; please make sure your name is printed clearly on the list.

Each model must represent exactly what it is on your army list. Eg; if you have a shield on the model, it must have a shield on the list. If there is a shield on the list, there must be a shield on the model! It will be assumed throughout the weekend that your models are fully representative of your list. If you bring a model without, for example, a shield and claim it has one, you will be politely reminded that it doesn t. Mustering your Forces Build me an army, worthy of Mordor. - Sauron To play in this event, you ll need to bring with you two armies of miniatures; one Good army and one Evil army. Each army may be worth up to 700 points, selected using the Choosing an Army guide on page of the The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey rules manual. Your Models, Conversions and Proxies You are Isildur s Heir, not Isildur himself Arwen Here at Warhammer World we have a set standard for all our gaming events that all models (including legs, arms, heads, weapons and so on the whole model) are 100% Games Workshop models and that they are fully painted and based. There are no exceptions to these rules. Additionally, all of the miniatures you bring (including all components) must be fully assembled, painted and based. For the sake of clarity for your opponents, and to avoid mid-game confusion, we also require that each model represents exactly what it is on your army list (including all weapons and equipment). Models with pikes need pikes, not spears; and as axes and swords and so on are very different now, it s even more important than ever to make sure your models are What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG). However, we understand that there are a number of miniatures not currently available in our ranges. We do insist, that where a model is still available, you use the correct model for the sake of clarity to your opponents. If a model is no longer available, it is perfectly acceptable to use a suitable conversion. All we ask is that it is 100% obvious to your opponent as to what it represents. If you are unsure as to whether it is obvious, please do us using the address at the end of this pack and we will put your mind at ease! For example, there are multiple unit entries for certain characters - there are three separate profiles for Galadriel e.g. (Galadriel; Galadriel, Protectress of Lothlórien and Galadriel, Lady of Light). As there are very different rules associated with each of these units we ask that you use the correct model. This means your opponent doesn t have to keep remembering throughout the game that a model actually has a shield on, isn t wearing armour, or is able to use a certain Magical Power or special rule that is absent on the other unit entry. This is to prevent confusion and upset players mid-game and makes the event much more enjoyable and immersive for everyone! At the beginning of Game 1, the youngest player rolls a D6. If the result is a 1-3, the youngest player is using Evil and the older player uses Good. If the result is 4-6, the youngest player is using Good and the older player uses Evil. If you used your Good army in Game 1, then you will be using your Evil army in Game 2, and vice-versa. At the beginning of Game 3 roll again as described above to determine which force you and your opponent are using. As such, in Game 4, you ll use your alternative force as described above. Then, at the beginning of Game 5, the youngest player rolls again as described above to determine which force they are using with their opponent using the opposite force. Finally, in Game 6, you ll use whichever force you didn t use in Game 5. We will be using new Points Match scenarios found within the General s Accessories Pack rolling randomly before each game to determine which one is in use. All players will play the same scenario, and once a scenario has been played, it will be crossed off the list and not used again. The scenarios will be made available closer to the event, so watch the Warhammer World website for those! How to win the Grand Tournament Our Victory is at hand Saruman the White At the end of the event, players will be ranked in order of the number of Grand Tournament points they have scored, with the Tiebreaker box being used as a second sorter. The player ranked in 1st position will be named The Champion of Middle-earth 2018, so it s all to play for! Any of you are welcome at any time! - Bilbo Baggins It s important to note, that while this event is called The Hobbit: The Unexpected Journey Grand Tournament, you may of course use models and rules from the entire The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game ranges, including all current and classic miniatures covered by the rules. Win the game 6 Grand Tournament points Draw the game 2 Grand Tournament points Lose the game 0 Grand Tournament points You will also need to record: The number of Victory Points you scored in the game. Total Victory Points difference Whether you killed the enemy Leader. Whether you used Good or Evil in that game. We will then use your results to determine your next opponent (see previously under Games).

5 Sportsmanship and Army Presentation Scores Sportsmanship and army presentation scores are calculated by voting in the following two categories when you hand in your final results at the end of the event. You get two votes in each category, and you must vote only for those players and armies you played against. This is also a secret ballot, so don t let anyone see who you ve voted for! Favourite Game You can vote for the two opponents you enjoyed playing against the most (note that you can t vote for the same opponent twice!). Maybe they displayed excellent sportsmanship, perhaps they were positive and friendly, or it was generally a fun and engaging game. Favourite Army You can vote for the two armies you played against that you liked the look of the most (note that you can t vote for the same army twice!). Excellent painting standards, a fantastic centrepiece model, spectacular conversions or overall theme may make up your mind. Each vote you receive counts as one point towards your Grand Tournament total points score this means you can receive a maximum of six points for Favourite Game and six points for Favourite Army. Every player must use their four votes, as they are integral to the event. If you don t vote, then you don t rank. Tiebreakers For each game you will also need to record on your event card the following victory conditions, which will be used as tiebreakers should the need arise (see the Tiebreakers box, below). Tiebreakers Box If players earn the same Grand Tournament score by the end of the event, we will use the following tiebreakers to establish final rankings. They are listed here in order of priority: Total Victory Points scored Total Victory Points difference Total number of enemy Leaders killed For example, John and Edd both achieve a Grand Tournament score of 21, so we go to tiebreakers to establish who has the higher rank. Firstly, John and Edd have the same amount of Victory Points, therefore they are still of the same rank. Moving on to the next tiebreaker, we find John and Edd have the same amount of Victory Points difference, therefore they are still of the same rank. Moving on to the next tiebreaker John has killed three enemy Leaders and Edd has only killed one, John would therefore finish above Edd in the final rankings. Grand Tourament Score Example At the end of the event, Edd has won four games and lost two games, earning a Grand Tournament score so far of 24. He then receives three Favourite Game votes and two Favourite Army votes, which are added to the 24 points he scored from his games for a total Grand Tournament score of 29.

6 Other Activities at the Grand Tournament The Most Sporting Player Award Displaying a great attitude towards your opponents and being a thoroughly sporting player is, at Warhammer World, one of the most important aspects of the hobby. The player who receives the most favourite player votes (with the highest overall rank used as a second sorter if needed) will earn the hallowed Most Sporting Player award and glory shall be theirs for all the ages. Legends gives you the chance to show off your painting skills with single models and warbands. Simply enter a model in the relevant category when entries are being taken (check the schedule above). Once all the entries are in, we ask everyone to vote for their favourites. Whoever gains the most votes in each category will be declared the winner! (Please note - these models must be from one of the armies you are using over the weekend). The Best Army Competition Hero of Legend: For all models on foot or mounted on horse/ Warg/camel/similar sized mount. In order to acknowledge the outstanding efforts that some players go to in order to produce stunning armies, we have the Best Army competition. The Events team will nominate armies for this competition, and these armies will be displayed on Sunday lunch time for everyone to vote on. The player who receives the most number of votes will win the Best Army award. Winning this prize is an honour for any hobbyist, and you can expect to see some utterly stunning armies on display as a result. This award is separate from your overall Grand Tournament score. Icon of Legend: For all monsters such as Trolls, Eagles, Ents. This category is also for heroes mounted on a monster e.g. Ringwraith on Fell Beast. All warmachines, artillery, chariots etc. This category also covers any heroes on war machines such as Radagast the Brown on his sleigh. Company of Legend: A warband as described in the The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey rules manual between 6 12 models led by a Hero. Note: Monsters and war machines may not be entered. Green Dragon Pub Quiz On Saturday evening, relax with a drink (they come in pints!) in Bugman s Bar. Team up with friends and enemies alike ( no more than 8 members in a team) and take part in the Green Dragon Inn Pub Quiz run by the Middle-earth team. This Quiz is running from 7:30pm until roughly 8:15pm Awards You have but one question to answer: How shall this day end? - Gandalf the Grey There may come a time when we don t recognise the achievements of players at the event, but it is not this day! At the Award Ceremony, we will be presenting the following prizes: Legends Painting Competition Winners Best Army Nominee to the players who were nominated for Best Army The Best Army to the player who won the Best Army competition The Most Sporting Player to the player who earned the highest number of favourite player votes 3rd Place to the player who is ranked in third place*. 2nd Place to the player who is ranked in second place* The Champion of Middle-earth 2017 to the player who is ranked in first place.* *For details on how players are ranked at the event, see the Scoring section earlier in this pack.
