MCCC August 22, 2017 Meeting Bob Jaques program on The Gold Mint at Dahlonega, GA was interesting on a U.S. Mint that most people do not known even existed. Bob has done a lot of research on the Dahlonega Mint that produced only gold U.S. coins from Its mintmark was D. The mint stopped production during the Civil War since it could not get new dies and gold. There were about 20 members and guests at the meeting. Members during the meeting Madison County Coin Club 2
Kurt Springfield (L) presents Bob Jaques with an ANA Educational Award Nomination for 2018 Officer Positions The nomination for 2018 club officers will be held at the October 24 meeting. For MCCC to continue to be a successful club, members are needed to fill the following positions: President, Vice-president, Secretary, Treasurer, and Member-at-Large. If you are interested in learning what an officer does, please feel free to talk to one at the meeting. All positions are for a one year term. The current officers have held their positions for a number of years. (Note- October 31 is the 5 th Tuesday of the month, NOT the 4 th Tuesday) Madison County Coin Club 3
THE COINS OF THE SHIP EL CAZADOR! By BOB JAQUES One uneventful day fishing in the Gulf of Mexico, the trawler MISTAKE was about 50 miles South of New Orleans. The MISTAKE S captain, Jerry Murphy from Pascagoula, Mississippi, was throwing out his nets for deep bottom fishing when one of his nets hung on a snag. The date was August 2, The El Cazador When Captain Murphy and his crew finally freed the net and brought it up, they were amazed to see what was in the net. The net was filled with old silver coins. Looking closer they noticed the coins were dated 1783 and bore markings from the Spanish Mint in Mexico City. Captain Murphy and his crew had brought up coins from the long lost sunken Spanish Ship EL CAZADOR. Excitement over this discovery spread quickly along the Coastal cities. Madison County Coin Club 4
Coins crusted together as picked up from ocean floor The EL CAZADOR, meaning THE HUNTER, was a Spanish brig that sank in the Gulf of Mexico in It was an important ship of the Spanish Government. King Charles III of Spain sent her on a mission on October 20, 1783 to Veracruz, Mexico to load and take much needed hard currency to their Colony of Louisiana. Corroded 8 Reale coin Madison County Coin Club 5
At Veracruz the ship was loaded with approximately 450,000 Spanish Reales of various denominations. King Charles III sent his most trusted ship Captain Gabriel de Campos y Pineda for this mission. On January 11, 1784 the EL CAZADOR sailed for New Orleans. The ship was never heard from again. Spain made several attempts to locate the ship but was unsuccessful. In June, 1784 the ship was officially listed as missing at sea. The certificate of authenticity What happened to this heavy ship? The best guess is that it ran into a hurricane as we know how violent they are after watching HARVEY and IRMA these past weeks. The treasure was stored in a safe at the old Grand Bay state Bank Building in Grand Bay, Alabama. In 2005 the coins were appraised and then sold. Madison County Coin Club 6
Although very historical they are not very expensive to own. Many are water damaged after years of being in the salt water of the Gulf. These ship wrecked coins make a great addition to any collection, and can be found at most coin shows. FREE ANA GOLD MEMBERSHIPS!! Richard Jozefiak has a number of vouchers left for a one year FREE ANA Gold (digital) membership. This is a $28 value. Four people have signed up for the free ANA Gold membership at the meeting.
