1 HUNGRY BUNNY Get ready for some hare-raising fun when your youngsters practice one-toone correspondence with this bashful bunny booklet! For each child, duplicate the bunny patterns (pages 7) onto white construction paper. Duplicate the carrot pattern (page ) onto orange construction paper for each child. Also gather two wiggle eyes and four four-inch strips of green curling ribbon for each child. To assemble the booklet, direct each child to cut out her patterns along the bold lines. Next, have her glue the bunny ears behind the head and glue the wiggle eyes in place. When the glue is dry, help her stack the bunny pages behind the title and staple them to the left side of the backing. Then have her staple the name page and sequenced carrot pages to the right side of the backing. Together, read the booklet and count the bunnies on each page. Direct the child to draw a matching number of carrots on the facing page. Wrap up the activity by helping the student staple the ribbon to the carrottop and write her name where indicated. Then encourage her to hop home and share her carrot-counting skills! Extend this activity with some hands-on fun! Use the patterns and tagboard to create ten bunny shapes. Decorate each bunny with a set of spots ranging from to 0. Duplicate ten carrot patterns onto orange construction paper. Program each with a numeral from to 0, cut them out and glue each to a clothespin. Invite each child to take a turn counting the spots on a bunny and then clipping on the matching carrot.

Rally your little balloonists for some exciting backward counting! Make a class supply of pages 9 on white construc - tion paper; then distribute a set of copies to each child. Have him color the booklet pages as desired and then trace the num - ber patterns. Instruct him to cut out the pages and numbers. Next, help each child sequence and glue the pages to create the booklet. Invite him to count the objects on the first balloon and then glue on the matching number. Encourage him to continue in a like manner until all the numbers are glued in place. When the glue is dry, help each child accordion-fold his booklet and then unfold it for a sky full of counting and reading fun! Extend the activity with this circle-time idea. In advance, number a set of scarves to 0. Have ten volunteers stand in a line; then give a scarf to each. As the rest of the class counts backward with the balloon booklets, have each volunteer in order from 0 to pretend to be a hot-air balloon and slowly sink to a sitting position.
