HK$ 4,000-5,000 Presentation albums were given by North Korean or sometimes Chinese People s Volunteers liaison officers to NNSC delegates, presumably on the delegate s departure from North Korea. We are aware of other albums containing unused stamps. This album is thus highly unusual in having the stamps cancelled on the pages and likewise contains far more stamps than others seen by the collector selection of artists drawings for various stamps, all signed and dated with Korea Stamp chop, some postdate the actual issuance while others predate it by a little, not to be the actual artwork for the issues, but rather official reproductions, generally fine to very fine (17). We understand that the North Korea Postal Archive authorities arranged to reproduce lost or damaged artwork for certain issues. These replacements were produced by the original designers on the dates indicated on the reverse of each piece (c.) selection of presentation sheets for 1958 stamp issues, Korean People s Army 10w. rose duplicated, otherwise all different, with we understand only 30 examples of each sheet produced, generally fine to very fine (10). 401

HK$ 800-1,000 CHINESE EPHEMERA Ex 3888 (part of Document) Cuba had a vibrant Chinese community until the Cuban Revolution in Its roots go back to the 19th Century system of contract workers recruited from Southern China and Taiwan that began in Chinese workers were required to enter into eight-year contracts at relatively minimal remuneration ( below slaves and laborers ) and upon completion of their initial eight-year terms could enter into shorter renewal contracts (Recontatas) or return to China. Chinese laborers were engaged as agricultural laborers Cuba was one of the largest sugar producers in the world as well as to build its railroads. The system was subject to much abuse and Hong Kong prohibited the trade there in 1855, while the Chinese Imperial Government launched an on-the-ground investigation in Cuba about the employment conditions in It is estimated that approximately 120,000 Chinese (males) entered Cuba under this system until its termination in collection of documents relating to Chinese labourers in Cuba, comprising printed initial employment contracts (for 8 years) in Spanish and Chinese (4), printed renewal contracts (in Spanish only) (3) including for employment building the railroad and as an agricultural worker in Guines (approximately 30 miles from Havana; rare) respectively, and Cuban passage document (split in the middle) from the Consulate General of Spain in China detailing the ship, captain and Chinese laborers being brought into Cuba; one of the initial employment contracts contains annotated periodic evaluations of the laborer while a second is accompanied by such reports in a separate document; also included is an 1884 Certificate of Nationality from the Chinese Consulate in Cuba issued to an individual originally from Canton. A fascinating look into the great mid-19th Century demographic movement that saw Chinese emigration to other parts of the world as a result of the economic, social and political dislocations after the First and Second China Wars, as well as Cuba s own need for a new labour source as a result of the decline of African slavery and the high mortality rates among its African slaves (9).
