1 Foreword Developing cutting skills (Stage 4) is one of a series of two books created by occupational therapists and teachers to support the development of cutting skills in children between the ages of 3 and 6. The activities target specific skills that will enable children to develop the coordination and motor skills required for cutting. Multiple opportunities to rehearse cutting skills are provided through simple, easy-to-use worksheets with clear instructions. The series outlines developmental milestones which can be useful for assessment and creating individual education plans. Developing cutting skills is part of a holistic approach to promoting a comprehensive foundation for academic success. Also in this series: Developing cutting skills (Stages 1 3) Contents Teachers notes... i xi Stage 4 worksheet instructions...xii Cutting line accuracy...xiii Stage 4 worksheets: Cutting along a curved line to a target Cutting out squares Cutting out triangles Cutting out circles Cutting out large, simple shapes Cutting corners Colouring and cutting out jigsaw puzzles Cutting along a tight curved line to a target Colouring and cutting out jigsaw puzzles (curved lines) Consolidation practice Colouring and cutting out masks Colouring and cutting out animals Sample Author Diana Rigg BA(Ed), BEd, CPP(UK), MEd, MSc(SpPath) Diana Rigg uses postgraduate education and speech pathology qualifications to create an innovative and practical approach to developing children s literacy and academic performance. 2 Learning to cut with scissors overview of stages Teacher notes Stage 1 Over a number of years, children progress through several stages when learning to cut with scissors. Children learn to hold scissors appropriately and to open and close them. Children learn to place their thumb in the top ring of the scissors and two or three fingers in the bottom ring. Sample Stage 2 Children learn to hold and snip paper. Children learn to hold the paper in their non-cutting hand and to open the scissors, push the blade forward and shut the scissors, resulting in snips to paper. Stage 3 Children learn to cut in a single direction and to cut along a line. Children learn to hold the paper in their non-cutting hand with their thumb placed on the upside of the paper and to cut towards a target. Stage 4 Children learn to cut corners and curves. The supporting hand is required to move and be repositioned. Developing cutting skills vi
