2 Lesson Plan One Match the Musical Sounds Class: Time: Purpose: The objective of this lesson plan is to demonstrate the difference in fast and slow sounds. Resources: Musical instruments - for example, triangle, tambourine, xylophone, maracas, drums, recorders, print out of worksheet (one per child). Step One: Lay out the musical instruments, either on a table or in a circle on the floor. Step Two: Explain that the aim of the exercise is to match the snail with the slow sounds and the lion with the fast sounds. Step Three: Slow is to be coloured in blue, fast to be coloured in red. Step Four: Play each musical instrument one by one and alternate between using fast and slow tempos. Step Five: After each musical instrument has been played, ask the students to match the instrument with the snail or lion. Tips: * Go one step further and have two groups of children. Each group has a mixture of instruments and each child takes it in turn to play a sound, which then has to be matched to either the snail or lion.

4 Lesson Plan Two Sounds with Snakes and Ladders Class: Time: Purpose: Choose one or vary each time you land on a square. 1. To practise identifying initial (first) sounds. E.g. c in the word cat. 2. To practise identifying end sounds. E.g. t in the word cat. 3. To practise identifying middle sounds. E.g a in the word cat. 4. To segment or sound out the whole word. E.g. c-a-t in the word cat. Resources: Snakes and ladders board, 1 dice and counter for each person. The 3 phoneme (CVC) words corresponding to the pictures on the board are on the side of the board game. For ease of use, initial sounds in the word are coloured green, middle sounds are coloured blue and end sounds are coloured purple. Step One: Decide if you will practise identifying the initial sound, end sound, middle sound or segment (sound out) the whole word. Step Two: Beginning at the start box, players roll the dice and move the correct number of spaces. Once they land on a space, they must say the name of the picture and provide the sound you requested. - Initial sound - What does the word start with? - End sound - What does the word end with? - Middle sound - What vowel sound can you hear in the middle? - Segment the word - Can you sound out the word? Step Three: Once they have provided the answer, they can move on in the game. Be sure to keep an eye on the numbers on the spaces to make sure you are going in the right direction. Step Four: If the players lands on a snake head they must slide down its body to the bottom of its tail. If they are lucky and land on a space at the bottom of a ladder they can climb up the ladder during that turn to the space at the top. Step Five: The winner is the first person to get to the Finish space.

6 Lesson Plan Three Zoo Animals Story Cubes Class: Time: Purpose: The objective of this lesson plan is to demonstrate sequencing. It also encourages the use of children s imaginations in story telling. Resources: Story cube print outs. Step One: Cut along the template and make each one into a cube with glue or double sided tape. Step Two: Children can roll each cube to add to the story. The order for the story should be when, who and where. E.g. One morning, the elephant, went to the zoo. Step Three: Encourage children to add a middle and ending to the story from their imagination. Tips: * Go one step further and encourage children to demonstrate the sounds associated with the animals. E.g. One afternoon, the lion (ROAR), when to the zoo.
