He compares himself with the ring of a drink can, scrapings from a porridge pan and the broken part of a discarded toy.. The literary device is personification and the example is the toothless stapler. The stapler is compared to an old person who has lost her or his teeth or has no staples. 6. They are related to a moving vehicle like a car. 7. The line means the tyre has no impression or pattern and has become bald or smooth. It cannot be used anymore as a vehicle on bald tyres will skid easily. 8. It can be so if the garden is not maintained that is not mown or trimmed. 9. A stray is an animal that is not owned by anyone and normally stays in the street to get scraps of food from garbage dumps. 0. We get food scrapings after a meal. The two reasons are it could have been pulled out by a child playing with it and the toy could have been faulty. As an orphan it is possible for the persona to feel unwanted, unloved and neglected. (i) The moral value I have learned is We should have confidence in ourselves either within or without the home (ii) I would tell the person to go out and look around to understand society and know that one is the builder of one s destiny. ) News Break. The poet uses the title to indicate that the boy is doing something unusual showing a change in his behaviour.. There are five stanzas and the rhyme scheme is a, b, c, b. They are at the front of the house. The boy gives the mother a hug and a kiss lovingly. (c He has offered to help his mother with some little jobs. (i) Reaction: The mother is very surprised. (ii) Textual evidence: The line, For goodness sake, what s this? A

Possibly after getting his school report which was not very good, he had no appetite to eat. (i) Reason: She says this because the boy is behaving differently from his usual self. (ii) Opinion: I think it is not right because a child will behave like a child that is behaving differently and unexpectedly every day. Normally they are thrown down to the floor. He does not throw his books and he does not scream and shout. The literary device is simile. (i) Example : The boy kicks up a fuss about having too much work at school. (ii) Example : The boy cries that he is not going back to school anymore. He did not throw tantrums or create a fuss. It means he was hurt in some way or other. She says this because she is totally unable to understand the change in the boy s behaviour. She wants to have a better look to make sure he is her son. (i) Feeling: She must have felt relieved. (ii) Reason: She feels this way because this is what she expects him to do hoodwink her with his good behaviour for possibly a poor school report. The title News Break means something unusual just happened and it is relevant because the boy is showing unusual behaviour, out of the ordinary. It is hyperbole because it is an exaggeration of the mother s feeling with regards to the reason for the change in his behaviour. He is not screaming or throwing a tantrum. (i) Expectation: Yes and she expects her son to be noisy, boisterous after coming home from school. The story, Fair s Fair is about three children, Raj, Sam and Lee who are excited about going to the fair in town. The three children are neighbours and are very close friends. Raj s father has promised to take them to the fair. Sam has permission from her father to go to the fair but Lee s mother does not allow it because she has no money for him. So, the three children go round to look for and do odd jobs to raise the money. But, they are not successful. Finally, Lee gets the money through his honesty in returning a purse found on the road. 6 The story, Fair s Fair is about three children s efforts to make money so that all three of them can go to the fair. While Sam and Raj have no problems, Lee does not have the money for the fair. The story has a few themes and one of the themes is resourcefulness in the face of difficulties. The three children as neighbours and good friends want to go to the fair together and when one of them may not be able to go due to lack of money, all three children show resourcefulness. They get together to find jobs to get the required money. They do two jobs, washing Sam s father s car and taking Mrs Green s dog for a walk. Though they are not able to get the money from these two jobs, their efforts show resourcefulness in the face of difficulties. 7 The story, Fair s Fair is about three children s efforts to make money so that all three of them can go

Raj and Sam get together with Lee to think of ways to get the money. They approach their parents and neighbours about doing odd jobs. They manage to get two jobs but they still could not get the money for Lee. When Lee finds some money, Lee returns the money to the owner and is given a reward. From this, the moral lesson I have learned is that honesty is the best policy. Graphic Novel: 0,000 Leagues Under the Sea The Search Expedition. The main characters in the story were Professor Aronnax, Captain Nemo, Ned Land and Conseil.. Professor Aronnax had the expertise on undersea life.. A narwhal is a type of whale (which has a long tooth like a tusk: for the male).. The mysterious events started in July, The unidentified object was first sighted off the coast of Australia. 6. The mission of the warship, Abraham Lincoln was to track down and kill the sea monster. 7. The creature being hunted was enormous, hundreds of feet long and moved at unbelievable speed. / It had a shiny black body shaped like a fish of about two hundred and fifty feet long. 8. Professor received invitation by the United States government. The creature attacked the ship and the Professor fell into the sea.. The content of the letter brought in by Conseil was an invitation from the United States government for Professor Aronnax. He was asked to join the U.S. army in the hunting trip to track and kill the sea monster which had been attacking ships and steamers for many months.. A narwhal or a whale is a mammal living in the sea. There are many types of whales. One of them is said to be the largest animal. A narwhal is a type of mediumsized whale. The male has a long tooth that looks like a tusk which can be very strong.. I think Professor Aronnax took the offer by the United States government because he was curious. He wanted to know about the strange creature that he was analysing. He wondered about it as the different incidents happened at different parts of the world within short intervals. Although he was considered an expert on undersea life, he was unable to find answers to the mystery. In addition, I think he was also adventurous and would not miss the chance given by the United States government in tracking the creature. After they wore the diving suits, they moved into a small room which was filled with water.. They spent many hours walking into the deep forest of Crespo Island.

The diving suits created by Captain Nemo for the underwater trip was different from the usual diving suits mentioned by Professor Aronnax. His diving suit had a special air tank, which was strapped to the diver s back. The air tank enabled the diver to walk for about nine to ten hours underwater. The underwater hunting trip was my first experience. I considered myself an expert on undersea life and I was thrilled about it. This was my chance to see real sea creatures that I had written in my book; Mysteries of the Ocean Depths. I was going to learn new things here. The first surprise was the diving suits developed by Captain Nemo. He was really a genius when he showed me the electric lamps and the air gun using glass bullets. I was really amazed wandering around the marvelious sea garden. There were so many marine species. I had never seen them moving before my eyes. We had to walk for more than an hour before we reached the Forest of Crespo Island. The trees were also different from those on land. We walked deep into the forest. I did not see any animals but Captain Nemo was very alert. He shot dead an otter which was quite a distance from us. Captain Nemo must have gone hunting in the forest before this trip. It was really an unforgettable experience for me and Conseil. Ned had missed the great opportunity to see the remarkable place. It was a strange trip but it was quite fun and interesting to see those new things. On Dry Land. B. B. D. D The Island of New Guinea was just () two miles away from the Nautilus and Ned thought it was an opportunity for them to () escape from the ship. However, Professor Aronnax did not favour the idea because the people living on the island were () cannibals. Ned insisted on going there so he could () hunt for animals because he was bored with eating fish. They enjoyed their () freedom on the island and Ned killed a wild boar. In a way, Captain Nemo could be quite heartless as he did not care what would happen to the professor and his companions if they were attacked and could not save themselves. He could not be blamed for what had happened because they knew about the cannibals and yet, they insisted on going there. On the other hand, I also think that Captain Nemo understood the feeling of the three people as they had not been on land for some time. They were not like him or his crew members who could make the Nautilus as home. However, they had to wait for full moon when the high tide could help the Nautilus to be free from the rocks.. The Nautilus was able to continue on its journey after five days trapped near the Island of New Guinea.. Captain Nemo used a telescope to look at the horizon. Professor Aronnax was being friendly by asking him questions. A7

The professor woke up to see Captain Nemo standing by the side. He had no idea what had happened to him because the last thing he remembered was having lunch in the cell. (Accept any suitable answer) I think Captain Nemo was involved in helping people to fight against the government of a country. He had friends on land in certain parts of the country. He gave them money or gold to support the people. To support fights or war could be a cruel act. Therefore, he did not want Professor Aronnax and his companions to know about his activities. They might wonder what and why, but to let them see or tell them about it would not be possible. Even with a badly injured man that he had taken on board, he still refused to let them know what had happened and the reason for such serious injury. The coral garden was to be the burial place. The men prepared for another sea expedition. They said prayers for the dead man. The coral kingdom looked magnificent.. Captain Nemo asked Professor Aronnax whether he was a doctor because he wanted him to treat a seriously injured man. He was very concerned for the man. A8. The injury of the man was so serious that there was no hope for him to survive.. The slope led the people to ninety feet below the surface of the ocean floor.. Captain Nemo brought his crew along so they would help in burying the dead person.. (i) The dead man was buried in the coral garden so corals could build up over the grave. (ii) Another reason was to prevent people or sharks to reach the place. Professor Aronnax curious, upset, concerned Captain Nemo sad, worried, hostile Ned Land frustrated, unsatisfied, unhappy 8 A Brave and Generous Captain. The Nautilus moved towards the island of Ceylon. It was famous for pearl fisheries.. Captain Nemo invited Professor Aronnax to visit the pearl bed. However, they must be prepared to protect themselves against sharks.. A shark attacked an East-Indian diver with its tail. Captain Nemo tried to help him by distracting it.. Ned killed the shark. He used his harpoon.. They took the diver back to his boat. Captain Nemo gave a bag of pearls to him. 6. Captain Nemo was grateful to Ned. He thanked him for saving his life.. There were sharks so they could use the knives to protect themselves.. The oysters contained pearls which were valuable.. Captain Nemo had seen a shark coming near them.. He did not realise the shark coming and attacked him.. The shark wanted to attack him too. 6. They gained experience in collecting oysters and were able to collect many of them.. The underwater expedition at Ceylon was to visit pearl fisheries which the country was famous for.. Captain Nemo was a brave person because he tried to help the East Indian diver by distracting it towards him.. He was also generous because he had given the diver a bag of pearls because the man did not complete his mission when the shark hit him and he became unconscious.

Ned was also aware about the journey after they left Ceylon as the ship was heading to the Red Sea which was a dead end. In the novel 0,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Captain Nemo could be considered as an antagonist, () a person who actively opposed to or was hostile to someone or something. This was because he was the person behind the mysterious attacks () on ships and steamers at sea which caused worries to people in early 867. His scientific knowledge enabled him to build the Nautilus, a () ship that could move underwater. He held Professor Aronnax, his servant, Conseil and Ned Land as prisoners () who were free to move on board the ship but would never be allowed to go home. By doing so, Captain Nemo thought that he was still human because he did not kill them for attacking and intruding into his territory. He did not have any intention of having the three men to go home because he did not want () his secret and the Nautilus to be known by those living on land. 9 The Secret Tunnel Leaving Ceylon Red Sea / Arabian Sea Arabian Tunnel went through to reach Mediterranean avoiding African Continent After the Nautilus left Ceylon, it was steered towards the west across the Arabian Sea. There was no way through by sea. Ned said they were heading towards a dead end. However, Captain Nemo knew where he was going. He said that there was no problem because the Nautilus would be taking a secret tunnel below Suez. He called it the Arabian Tunnel. They reached Mediterranean on th February A Plan to Escape. at the library at nine that night. Ned had been caught trying to escape. the place was bright with many old shipwrecks in the area. boxes of treasure from the ships. the Island of Crete to help the people there fight for their freedom. There was a graveyard of old wrecked ships filled with treasure in Vigo Bay.. The Nautilus stopped there because Captain Nemo asked his crew to collect the treasure from the ships.. In 70, the admiral of the Spanish ships felt that his country would lose the war against Britain so he set fire to all his ships.. Captain Nemo took all the lost treasure as his but Professor Aronnax thought that the treasure should belong to the Spanish people.. Ned was disappointed because his intention to escape was unsuccessful.. Captain Nemo argued that he deserved to own all the treasures in the sunken ship. The reason he gave was he was not using the money for his own interest but to help others in need.. The countries which were involved in the war were Britain and Spain.. Captain Nemo gave his gold to the people living on the Island of Crete so they could use it to fight for their freedom.. Ned made a plan to escape because the Nautilus was in the Atlantic Ocean which was just twelve miles from the coast of Spain. (Accept any suitable answer) In my opinion, Captain Nemo had found a variety of treasure from the sunken ships. The treasure that he had taken made him a richer person. Some of the things in the treasure were gold bars. Besides gold bars, there must be a collection of things like vases, fine china plates and collectible items. Those were the things that Professor saw when he visited the museum in the Nautilus.. Ned said the dialogue and it was said to Professor Aronnax.. It was said to inform the professor about the plan to escape during the night.. They could not get new oxygen supply if they could not escape in three days time which could be dangerous for them.. Captain Nemo had both good and bad character traits. He was inhuman and cruel when he attacked ships and steamers at sea. He might have his own reasons which were unknown to us. I think he was also arrogant. He would do what he wanted without thinking about how other people felt about it. However, he also had good traits which were kind and generous. He helped people whether they were close to him or unknown to him. For example, he helped the diver. He was also calm and patient in all situations. Professor Aronnax might not have negative traits but he tended to follow instructions. Also, he always cooperated with Captain Nemo. He might not want to cause trouble between him and the Captain. Sometimes he could be very impatient in wanting to get out of a problem. He also worried about things. One good trait of the professor was he always thought about others. He thought that the treasure from the sunken ships should belong to other rightful owners, not Captain Nemo. After he escaped from the Nautilus, he still hoped that Captain Nemo would change his ways. The two characters were very knowledgeable in their own fields such as about marine life and the underwater world. In a way, the similarities and differences between the two did not bring any conflict in the story.
