Identify personal pronouns Use the correct article: a, an, or the To be: use the correct form To have: use the correct form Optional reading related to 5 th grade study In fifth grade social studies, you will study exploration and early colonization of the Americas. Biographies of famous people will give you a head start in history. The Landmark books give plenty of detail about the early days of our country. If you prefer lots of pictures, look for Columbus by the d Aulaires, and Where Do You Think You re Going, Christopher Columbus and Around the World in a Hundred Years: from Henry the Navigator to Magellan by Jean Fritz. Another book for all ages about Columbus is Fiona Macdonald s You Wouldn t Want to Sail With Christopher Columbus! Many books were written for the 500th anniversary of his first voyage: I, Columbus: My Journal by Peter and Connie Roop, Follow the Dream by Peter Sis, and The Discovery of the Americas by Betsy and Giulio Maestro. (The latter book also has an activity book to go with it.) Of course, Columbus is only one of many explorers you ll be discussing. Ask the librarian what is available on the Vikings, Prince Henry the Navigator, Magellan, and Sir Francis Drake. The Maestros book Exploration and Conquest: the Americas after Columbus is one place to start. Your social studies unit begins with Native Americans. The librarian can direct you to the books about various tribes and individuals. Don t forget the beautiful picture books of myths and legends about Raven and Coyote; Paul Goble; Gerald McDermott, and Tomi DePaola have also done some fine work in this area. If you have not read Johanna Hurwitz s Aldo Applesauce series check them out! The Blossom family books by Betsy Byars are also funny; the first one is The Not-Just-Anybody Family. The sequels all have the family name Blossom somewhere in the title. JUST FOR FUN Alexander Avi Bishop Boston The Cat Who Wished to Be a Man; Time Cat; The Book of Three series Poppy and Rye, series Twenty and Ten The Children of Green Knowe (series) Burnett The Little Princess; The Secret Garden Summer Work Packet Incoming Grade 5, 6/11/ :34:50 AMPage 3 of 7
4 Burnford Byars Cassedy Conly Dahl DePaola Downer, Ann Eager Enright Fitzgerald Fitzhugh Fritz Fleischman Freedman George Gilson Hahn Jacques Karr King-Smith Lewis, C.S. Lindbergh, A. He has also written other books not related to these characters. Try Seven-Day Magic, The Well-Wishers, or The Time Garden. Gone-Away Lake, Return to Gone-Away, Thimble Summer The Great Brain series Harriet the Spy Bully for You, Teddy Roosevelt, The Double Life of Pocahontas, The Lost Colony of Roanoke, other biographies Jim Ugly The Wright Brothers: How They Invented the Airplane; Who Was First? 5 Milne Myers Naylor Paulsen Pearce Pinkwater Prelutsky Reeder Robinson Rogers Rylant Sauer Selden Slote Snicket Spinelli St. John Stolz Uchida Wilder Wright Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner Please don t think of these as baby books. There is much sly humor and British wit in them that is completely lost in the Disney version. Read the real books with the Shepard illustrations to see what I mean. Me, Mop, and the Moondance Kid Maudie in the Middle; Beetles, Lightly Toasted; The Shiloh Trilogy; The Boys Start the War/The Girls Get Even; Lawn Boy, sequel- Lawn Boy Returns Tom s Midnight Garden Fat Men From Space; Lizard Music and others The New Kid on the Block; The Dragons Are Singing Tonight; Ride a Purple Pelican - wonderfully funny poetry! a nice switch from Shel Silverstein Awful Orgre s Awful Day; The Frogs Wore Red Suspenders; Its Raining Pigs and Noodles, My Dog May Be A Genius Captain Kate The Best School Year Ever Freaky Friday Missing May; Blue-Eyed Daisy Fog Magic The Genie of Sutton Place; The Cricket in Times Square; Tucker s Countryside Finding Buck McHenry; The Trading Game A Series of Unfortunate Events Wringer; Crash The White Giraffe, Dolphin s Song; The Last Leopard; Elephant s Tale The Explorer of Barkham Street; A Dog on Barkham Street; The Noonday Friends; others A Jar of Dreams; The Best Bad Thing The Little House series; there is also a songbook, and many biographies of Laura Ingalls Wilder which the librarians will be glad to help you find. You know that they have far more books than I could put on one list! Summer Work Packet Incoming Grade 5, 6/11/ :34:50 AMPage 6 of 7
7 Remember religious reading; God doesn t take a vacation from you - don t take one from Him. Check the Dewey Number 200 shelves for Bible stories and JB (biographies) for lives of the saints and other good people.
