1 Name: Ansonia Public Schools Summer Math Activities For Students Entering 5 th Grade You have worked so hard learning new math this year, and we hope you continue practicing those skills over the summer! Here are many fun math activities that you can do to help practice math and get you ready for fifth grade. In this packet, you will find a variety of different activities for July and August. Once an activity has been completed, a parent or guardian should write his/her initials in the box. If you wish, you may create a journal and attach any papers you would like to show your new teacher. You will also find directions for the math games and a list of fun books about math that you can look for at the local library. Please return all activities to the main office by Friday, August 28 th. All completed packets will be entered in a raffle to win a new tablet!!! (Don t forget to have your parent/guardian initial the activities) Plus, your new teacher will be so proud of the work you did over the summer Have a Safe and Happy Summer! 4 Flip it and Multiply Number of players: 2 Materials: A deck of playing cards (eliminating the face cards) Objective: The player with the most cards at the end is the winner. Directions: 1. Mix the cards and deal them evenly to each player. Players place their stack of cards facedown in front of them. 2. Players simultaneously say, "1-2-3 Flip It" and tum over the top 2 cards from each of their piles. 3. Each player finds the product of his or her own two cards. (For example, if a player flips a 7 and 8, then the player multiplies 7x8 to get 56.) Both players call out their products. 4. The player with the greatest product takes all four cards and places them in a separate pile. (For example, I f player one flips a 9 and 3 and player two flips a 6 and 7 then player two is the winner of that hand because 42 (6x7) is greater than 27 (9x3). 5. Play continues until all cards in the pile have been flipped or until time runs out. 6. If both players have the same product, then the players flip 2 more cards each. The player with greatest product keeps all 8 cards.
