2 2 LIARS GENERAL MEETING April 9, 2009 SHOW AND TELL The Polikarpov I-16 Rat A Work in Progress by Sal Calvagna A few words about the model: The model is 1/4 scale with a wing span of 88 inches. It has Robart retracts and is powered with a Zenoah G-62. Sal made all the fiberglass parts himself. Some History on the I-16 The Polikarpov I-16 was the world s first monoplane fighter with retractable landing gear and variable pitch propeller. It was the most advanced fighter aircraft of its time. To give you an idea of how far behind the U.S. was in fighter development, our front line fighter, during the same period, was the Boeing P-26 Peashooter, which sported large wheel spats, landing and flying wires and over 50mph slower than the I-16. One would think that such an advanced aircraft must have been produced by the best and brightest aeronautical minds with the support and infrastructure of a major aeronautical design bureau. Well, some of this is correct. Actually, the prototype for the I-16 was built by convict labor in a Soviet penitentiary. You see, the brilliant aeronautical designe, Nikolai Nickolaevich Polikarpov, was, in fact, a prisoner of Stalin s brutal purge. Polikarpov was well known for his earlier work, especially the PO-2 biplane. In 1927, Stalin had ordered him to come up with a new design for a fighter aircraft. After 2 years without success, Stalin had him arrested and sent to prison under the watchful eye of the state to produce a viable fighter. Late in 1933, Polikarpov s TsKB-12, later the I-16, was accepted into production a month before the prototype flew. During the Spanish Civil War, Stalin sold 500 of these nimble fighters to the Republicans. For the first time, the I-16 was blooded in combat and reigned supreme over the German Heinkel HE-51 and the Arado Ar68 biplanes. It was certainly equal to, or better than, the Italian CR-32 and CR-42 biplanes it encountered. However, it was outclassed by the new Bf-109s that first saw combat in Span. The I-16 also fought In China against the Japanese forces. There, the little fighter was no match for the more maneuverable Claudes and Nates and new tactics were employed to help even the odds. Equipped with the Soviet 20mm cannon, it was the most powerful aircraft weapon in front line service with any nation of WWII. The design was clearly showing its age at the outset of WWII. It remained the most numerous fighter with the Soviet Air Forces (VVS) at the beginning of the war and fought on into Over 8500 variants were built including 2 seat trainers. Page 2
3 Show and Tell (Continued) 3 Ziroli F6F Hellcat A Work in Process Redesigning the wing assembly. By Lou Cetrangelo The original design of the Ziroli F6F Hellcat called for a 3 piece wing. Each of the outboard wing sections joined with a aluminum tube that fit into a larger tube in the center section. Dowels were used at both ends of the airfoil to prevent it from rotating. In my 12% blown up version the custom landing gear that I had ordered was so robust that there was only a small gap between the air cylinder and the wheel. I had room for a wing tube or a wing spar, but not both. I decided to use a different approach and built the spar strong enough so that 1/16" stainless steel straps on the top and bottom of the spar are used to attach the outer wing sections. I am using a 4" long 8 32 Allen head cap screw on each outer wing with a locking nut on the bottom. This effectively spreads the bending forces on the wing from the diameter of a wing tube to the entire height of the airfoil and will result in a much stronger wing joint. Specs on the Moki 250cc Radial 5 Cylinder Gas Engine, 4 stroke, to be used in this model: Power: 15HP, Exhaust: Collector Ring, Incredible, realistic engine sound., Fuel: Gasoline mixed 40:1 with Honda 2 stroke oil. Winners: 1st Pl. Jett Koontz, 2nd Pl. Jim Soque, 3rd Pl. Roger Bossert. Since there were some problems making the SEFLI Finals, proxy pilots will fly their winning Egg Carton WINGS at the April 21st Fly-Off. See finals of Three Club Fly Off results in this issue. lb Latest Pictures from the Club Field April 18, 2009 by Harvey Rubenstein Beautiful weather brought a nice turn-out of models to the field. Harvey s new E-Flite Piper Cub w/e-46 motor, 4200mah LiPo, Jim Milligan s Extra 260 and Fred Krage s Predator. Looks like a larger version of the one I ve been flying. This one has ailerons and a working low hung rudder. I guess I ll just have to charge up some batteries. lb
5 5 by Avey Shaw Aviation Theory 101 Lift There is a new breed out there flying models of the A.R.F. variety that have no idea what makes that aircraft stay in the air. Like everything else, it is good to have a foundation in whatever you do and an understanding of the principles involved. Therefore, part one of this article will deal with Aviation Theory 101, Lift. Part One: The cross section of a wing is called an airfoil. A basic airfoil has a flat bottom and a curved surface on the top. As it moves through the air, its leading edge separates the air molecules. The air passes under and over the wing. So far, this is quite simple to visualize. Now, think of the air as a rubber like substance with the airfoil in it. The bottom is flat and the top is curved. Therefore, the top is stretching the rubber while the bottom is not. When you stretch a substance, you thin it out. In air, if you thin it out, you lower the pressure. When this happens, the pressure under the wing wants to equalize and forces the wing upward carrying the wing with it. There, you have it. Very basic stuff and all you really need to know. Part Two: A.R.F. (All Ready to Fly models) have opened many doors that otherwise would remain shut to the less capable builders. Many of the guys who fly A.R.F. models have shown greater abilities in the flying aspects of the hobby. The advantages to all of us is that it creates greater interest in joining the hobby. This new large group is finally reaching a point where it is recognized as a viable and accepted sport. Not quite golf, but getting there. This is primarily due to our numbers and this is a credit to A.R.F., electric, park flyers aircraft, and the industry that promoted it. I hate to say it, but those 3rd world countries that produce the products we purchase at prices we can afford have done us all a good turn. This is something manufacturers in this country, I m sorry to say, could not compete with. If we lowered the tax rate on the model industry, maybe we would see more A.R.F. s made in the U.S.A. There are some names still around like Fox and K&B, but most are gone. If I threw out the names gone by, it would have no meaning to this new generation of the sport. For us, who were there in the early days.., we remember. Avey Shaw Page 5
6 LIARS SEFLI LIRCS First Annual Tri Club Egg Carton Wing Fly Off April 21, 2009 at the SEFLI Meeting Hall Holtsville Ecology Center, Holtsville, NY 6 Andy King John Calo Tony Wetzel Elliott Goldhirsh Tom Hunt Lionel Bernstein Alan Ford 1st - Tony Wetzel, 2nd - Lionel Bernstein, 3rd - Alan Ford The LIARS, SEFLI and the LIRCS held their First Annual Egg Carton Flying Wing Contest Fly-Off at the SEFLI Meeting Hall in the Holtsville Ecology Center, Holtsville, NY on April 21, Some History on this event. The event was originally a contest held by the LIARS to keep the members occupied during the cold winter months. It was later expanded to an interclub event with the SEFLI club as a means of generating more interest and to encourage competition between the clubs. The LIRCS picked up on the fun the Flying Wings elicited and they expressed an interest in having a three way event. All three clubs agreed to put in $25. so that prizes to the top three flyers would generate more incentive to compete. The prizes would be, $35. first place, $25. second place and $15. for third place. This did increase the number of Flying Wings entered and the results of individual club contests sent 9 winning models to the Egg Carton Flying Wing Fly Off. It was suggested we have this event, again, next year and maybe we can get another club interested in joining in on the fun. 7 LIARS Club Member Jim Geiselman with a Shadow drone somewhere in Afghanistan. 7 Just in case you thought flying Radio Controlled models was just for fun, you can see from the pictures Jim sent me it can be a very interesting way to make a living. Recruited to work for a company that services and sets up military drone aircraft, he has seen some interesting service in Iraq and now Afghanistan. We, here on Long Island, wish him a safe deployment and have kept his spot on our membership list active. So, when he returns, he will be able to fit right into a schedule of RC model flying at the club field. Thanks for the great pictures, Jim. Hope to see you home safe and sound. Send more when you get a chance. The resolution of those you sent are just fine. LB a message from the President.. (Continued from P1) You must practice under his supervision. Upon completion of your 3rd monthly meeting, you are then eligible to take your check out solo flight test. Upon passing this flight requirement, your Pilot Permit will be issued to you. Currently, our permit officer is Nick Miceli. New applicants send all applications for your Pilot Permit to him. His home address is: #6 Sterling Court, Medford, NY, I would, at this time, like to thank Nick for his continued efforts to make our club function harmoniously. Please remember, ladies and gentlemen, to display your flying permits, conduct thorough pre flight check ups, and get those planes safely back to the runway on the center line! Happy flying to all!
