Attached you will find your child s Summer Reading packet. It describes the program, and explains how it will fit into your child s next school year. We hope that by participating in RACE INTO READING your child will read for pleasure and refine their reading skills as they become lifelong readers. Please sign below to indicate that you have received and reviewed this district requirement. Return this permission sheet to your child s teacher no later than May 21, Please keep the remainder of the packet for use this summer. 2 Elementary Summer Reading Program Dear Parents/Guardian: Welcome to the Brunswick City School District s Elementary Summer Reading Program! Reading is the most important life long skill that we can help our children learn and practice. Requirements: Read or listen to THREE books Complete a reading log entry for each book. Complete ONE graphic organizer of your choice (FICTION or NON-FICTION). Parents are encouraged to read aloud to and with their children Expectations: This is a district-wide requirement Summer reading log and graphic organizer are due by August 28, 2015 The rubric serves as a guideline for what is expected and indicates the points on which the grade is based Summer reading will be reflected in the first marking period Booklists Brunswick Public Libraries District Website: Board of Education receptionist Your school office until June 10 and beginning August 10 Suggestions: Participate in the Public Library Summer Reading Program and use those titles for this program Please understand that the titles listed are just suggested reading Public & school media specialists & teachers are eager to suggest other titles in fiction and non-fiction Reading Log and Graphic Organizer: GOAL: To encourage students to read for pleasure and continue to refine their reading skills in order to become lifelong readers. 3 Summer Reading for Students Entering Fifth Grade School Year Encourage Your Student to Have Fun Reading This Summer! Fourth and Fifth Grade students are required to read or listen to three books over the summer. Choose at least one book from each of the three categories below: 1. One fiction book 2. One non-fiction book 3. One book of your choice or recommended by the public librarian, school media specialist or teacher. See instructions on the Summer Reading cover letter concerning the activities. The Medina County Public Library will be able to assist you in your choices. Fun Summer Reading Activities These suggestions can be used to help enhance your family s Summer Reading experience: *Talk about the book you read to your parents and friends *Bike ride to the park and read *Read the map at the zoo or amusement park and the menu at a restaurant *Play a board game *Write your own story *Write a letter to your grandparents, relatives or friends *Visit educational websites: *Go to the library and participate in the summer reading program (has built in MP3 player for kids)
