2 SACRED HEART ELEMENTARY SCHOOL is one of the oldest and largest Catholic schools in the region. Sacred Heart Elementary School, located in the East End of Pittsburgh, currently educates over four hundred and fifty students from diverse socioeconomic, ethnic and religious backgrounds. Sacred Heart has earned a reputation of excellence in education that has continued since the school first opened 139 years ago. It is also a school that enriches the spirit and challenges the mind. Founded in 1873, under the direction of the first parish pastor, Reverend Bernard Ferris, and guided by the Sisters of Charity for more than 130 years, has been serving families and students throughout Pittsburgh. Today, Reverend Robert J. Grecco, the current pastor, and Sister Lynn Rettinger, a Sister of Charity and the current principal, continue the tradition and aspire to build a state of the art science laboratory. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE GREEN TIE GALA & AUCTION? The Green Tie Gala & Auction is a fundraising event to benefit the Science and Technology programs of Sacred Heart Elementary School. The goal is to fund the estimated cost of the $400,000 needed to build a twenty-first century Science Laboratory. The first two Annual Green Tie Gala & Auctions, held in 2010 and 2011, raised over $267,000 towards this goal. The initiative began to take shape when a group of alumni, from the class of 1969, conveyed an interest in being an active part of creating the new science lab and naming it in honor of their classmate, Mark C. Krotec, a 1969 Sacred Heart alumnus. Through the generous support and continued efforts of members of the, Class of 1969, the lab will be named for their classmate the Mark C. Krotec Science Laboratory. Their generous donations were bolstered by the Ryan Memorial Foundation s contribution to this worthy cause. Mark is a renowned science instructor at Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School and acts as an advisor to countless students that have entered the PA Junior Academy of Science over the years and have won accolades for their work. He is an educator for the Pittsburgh Tissue Engineering Initiative, Inc., a 2002 Carnegie Science Center Awards for Excellence winner as a secondary science teacher, and is an advisor to students entering the Pittsburgh Regional School Science and Engineering Fair, many of whom became award recipients. The budding student scientists of Sacred Heart are counting on our financial support to provide the building blocks for this undertaking. Funds acquired through the dinner and auction will contribute to this exciting endeavor. We will be celebrating on Saturday, November 17, 2012, at Heinz Field and anticipate over three hundred guests. This promises to be one of the most enjoyable and memorable events of the year!
