The meeting and luncheon lasted over 2 hours as a full schedule of topics were covered. Since the last meeting many new members had joined, or transferred to the Colony, and Governor Marcia Dalkalitsis wanted to welcome each and everyone of them. A non-member, Shirley Koons, became a Friend of the Mayflowers for her selfless deeds. The Junior Membership Chair for the State and the Colony share information about the Florida Junior program. Ruth Muir, a new member who obtained her Mayflower certificate at age 93 last September, passed away in December. The Colony celebrated her life and acknowledged her passing. Finally, it was time to gather, meet new faces, welcome old friends and enjoy a meal catered by TooJay s. Meeting Minutes and Roll Call begin on page 8. Changes 10 Well, this warm weather makes it easier to see alligators, as they are out sunning; but harder to see manatees, as they are further away from the springs at the Homosassa Attraction. People? It's been great for us - the golfers have more balmy hours for the game, and the gardeners are already busy. For our Mayflower members, it should mean a beautiful day for our April picnic. Please remember, it's at a new venue this year: check the invitation for the address. We tried to find a place that is larger, as more and more of our members are enjoying this meeting. And we also wanted to make sure we had protection from too much sun or possible rain. We hope we have it all taken care of! We hope to see you all at the meeting where you can renew acquaintances as well as get to know our new members. And eat great hotdogs! See you April 2nd!, Marcia Lost & Found At our January 16 th Colony meeting, Shirley Ferris lost her 1812 charm. If you found this item please contact Shirley directly. Her phone number and address is included in the The James Chilton Colony Roster also know as the Pink Book. If you have her charm and do not have a colony Roster, please the editor (scribkelly@gmail.com). I will contact Shirley. James Chilton Colony 2

4 James Chilton Colony s Youngest Member Joshua, the newest and youngest member of the Chilton Colony, is 8 months old. He is a descendent of Edward Doty, who travelled aboard the Mayflower as a servant of Steven Hopkins. Being a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendents is nothing new in Joshua's family. His great grampa, Mahlon Herrick, helped organize the Tilley Colony in Sarasota and was very active in that colony over the years. By Tom & Kathy Herrick Edward Mayflower Doty Joshua's Grampa is Tom Herrick, a member of the board of the Chilton Colony. Joshua joins his brother Drew, age 2, sister Rebekah, age 6 and cousins Camryn, age 8 and Emerson, age 11 as Junior Members. Tom & Kathy Herrick seated with their five grandchildren The children all have kid version genealogy books created by Gramma (Tom's wife Kathy) which contain detailed sections about their ancestor, Edward Doty. Edward led a colorful life, fighting the first duel in the new world, being the first put in stocks and having more court cases with his name in them than any other Mayflower passenger. There is also a family story that he jumped out of the boat onto Plymouth Rock first, declaring himself the first arrival. (Ed: My thanks to Tom & Kathy Herrick for providing the above photographs and story) James Chilton Colony 4
