1 THE WINTHROP SOCIETY DESCENDANTS OF THE GREAT MIGRATION READ before Completing Application First, save a copy of this application onto your own computer, and use the saved copy. Applications must be completed on your computer or typed with a black ribbon. The Winthrop Society WILL NOT ACCEPT handwritten applications. If you have QUESTIONS or DON'T UNDERSTAND the form or the instructions, PLEASE ASK the Registrar at registrar@winthropsociety.com. The Winthrop Society (WS) is a lineage society which requires a proven, direct (non-collateral), unbroken bloodline from you to the settler who lived in the Massachusetts Bay Area. Acceptable proof must accompany the application. Please cite your best (sufficient but NOT exhaustive) documentation for each entry. Please follow the following guidelines: The settler or qualifying ancestor is to occupy the space for Generation 1 on the application; progress forward in chronological order ending with you. WS requires all proofs for the last 3 generations (you, spouse, parents, grandparents): birth, marriage & death. Always use names exactly as shown on proofs (do not include middle names if NOT on the proof) and dates of events when known. All entries require proofs. Just because you have a direct line from the Duke to you, you still need to include the female line and proofs. You and your male descendants did NOT sprout from aliens. For each generation, cite its proofs in the Proofs space provided. Use complete citations (Abbreviations are OK). The proof may be your record copy from another lineage society, such as DAR, Colonial Dames, etc. Ask Registrar if your society is acceptable. All generations need to be filled out on the Winthrop Society application, but for those generations using the record copy, the citation should read, e.g.: DAR # gen. Include the record copy as your proof, with appropriate generations marked in red.. Write dates using a numerical day, three-letter month, and four-digit year, such as: 23 Sep Leave space blank if you have no relevant information. Do not use n/a or -0- or "living". If using Ancestry, Find a Grave, etc., do not submit the summary as proof; submit the image of the original record and/or tombstone image. Also, include an image showing the name and location of the cemetery/burial plot (gate/entrance sign picture, with location/gps which may be handwritten or typed), cemetery type: church, city, private, family, etc. On each proof, on every page, starting with Gen 1, mark the generation(s) shown in the proof, using red pen in the upper right-hand corner (e.g. Gen 6 & 7 or Gen 5, or Gen 1-4, etc.). This helps if pages get disconnected. Do NOT use staples at all; only use paper clips if necessary. Carefully underline using red pen or pencil or check in the margin in red near the relevant information. If your information is not marked in red, we may not find it and ask for more information to complete the application. DO NOT USE HIGHLIGHTER. Always include a copy of the title page, including title, author/editor/compiler, and date, when submitting pages from a book or Bible. If several generations use the same book, you should make one copy of the Title Page, and label it: Gen 1, 2, 3, etc. and put Gen on the appropriate pages. Do NOT make multiple copies of the same pages for different generations. All pages + Title Page should be put together (paper clips are helpful here) and only sent as one packet. (continued)

2 The first time you use a book for a proof, write it out in full: The Great Migration Begins, Immigrants to New England, , p 1647 ; from then on you may use an abbreviation: GMB, 1620, p This is by Robert Charles Anderson and his Great Migration series of books are ALWAYS acceptable proofs. UNACCEPTABLE BOOKS are Savage, Banks, & Cutter; they have errors and cannot be used as proofs. We don t have the time or volunteers to discover/correct the errors and have found that Anderson has been reliably researching for the Great Migration Study Project sponsored by the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) since the beginning of the Project in Anderson says in GMB, , page xxix, Most genealogists have a special interest in the ship on which their immigrant sailed when migrating to New England, but unfortunately there are very few authentic passenger lists surviving from the time of the Great Migration. Banks in The Winthrop Fleet of 1630 on page 53 says, As there is no known list of the emigrants who came in the Winthrop Fleet, so there is none of those who came in particular ships, beyond the Governor himself, his three boys, and three other persons casually mentioned by him in his log of the voyage. (No mention who these three persons are) Therefore, we do NOT recognize Arbella for the ship arrival. All qualified ancestors arrived on the Winthrop Fleet. The Great Migration series by Robert Charles Anderson is the best source to use to start your first two generations. Acceptable proofs include: Birth (BC), death (DC), and marriage (MC) certificates Copies of federal and state census records Passports Deeds Wills Other government records Pension records Certain publications such as family and county histories will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If possible include a bibliography. Please ASK BEFORE using these histories, as we may not accept them. Do NOT use undocumented lineages found on the internet or large undocumented family trees. We do not know these people and cannot accept these as proofs. Upon completion, mail the signed application and proofs with your application check, payable to The Winthrop Society. We need your original signature so will not accept an application by . Do NOT send original documents for your proofs; they will not be returned. Send copies. Submit to: Winthrop Society Registrar Marie A. Seelye Pine Glen Dr E Black Forest, CO registrar@winthropsociety.com
