In this newsletter, you will read about the club s display at the Seattle Boat Show. I do not want to repeat what our guest editor has penned, but let me say we had a fantastic booth. In short, we knocked it out of the park. Of course, none of this would happen without volunteers and it takes many people to set up and staff a booth for the duration of the boat show. Thank you for all of your help. Last Wednesday the officers of the club met at my house for a planning session for our April 5 garage tour/symposium. Curt and Marsha Erickson have graciously volunteered to host the symposium at their home on Tanwax Lake. If you have never been to Curt and Marsha s home, you are in for a treat. I will try to paraphrase a Curt quote: all of my life I have been looking for an old guy with a bunch of old boats and parts turns out I am that guy. Through Curt s many years of being enthusiastically involved in the classic boating hobby, he has amassed a large collection of boats, boat parts and engines. I promise there will be plenty of things to see. As for symposium topics and speakers, here is a sneak preview of what to expect: Tim Robinson from Robinson Restoration in Southern California will talk about their documentation and restoration of Henry Ford s one off 33 Hacker Craft. Our very own Craig Magnusson will help us understand the George Crouch speed formula. Master mechanic and all around boat guru John Flaherty will give an interactive audience presentation on inboard marine propellers. FEBRUARY 2014 Guest Editor - Tom Cathcart From Oregon, Tom Horn will be speaking on the evolution of the planing hull design. We will then have a lunch break and transition into some more interactive hands on presentations. Mechanic/educator Karl Hoffman will speak (with examples on hand) about trouble shooting and repairing marine manual transmissions Finally, Karl Hoffman, Dick Dow and Craig Magnusson will gang up and do a presentation about the Chris Craft 283/350 marine engines. Sounds like a great way to spend a Saturday to me. Let me add, Curt has promised boat rides in the morning and the club will cover the cost of a simple lunch for all. No excuses, be there. See you soon, Rob.

2 Boat Show-Boat Show-The Big Seattle Boat Show! As I sit here at home fending off a cold acquired over Super Bowl weekend, I recollect the previous weekend s activities of helping to staff our ACBS booth at the Seattle Boat Show. As it usually happens, we are never quite certain that a spot will open up for us until shortly before the show is set to begin, as the various manufacturers and advertisers of course have priority. If the show is not quite a sell out, then we are offered space to set up and promote our ACBS mission of preserving and restoring antique & classic boats. Member Frank Gonzales works his magic with the Northwest Marine Trades Association, sponsors of the Seattle Boat Show, to make this space available to us. Many of our Club s members help with the logistics of putting on a first class display such as this, our only real chance to interact with the public during the off season. What s that hanging off your port side Frank? Over the course of the show, there are 80 shifts to be scheduled for our membership to work. Organizing this, and the multitude of tasks necessary to create our presence at the show, is member Ron Stevenson. Coordinating the movement of the display boats, the forklifts, the set up and tear down is no small task, and Ron performs this seamlessly with help from our club s membership. Thank you Ron for all you do for our organization. I would also like to recognize one of our members who consistently performs above and beyond the call of duty, Steve Francini. Steve put in a lot of road miles driving up from Lake Taps, making several trips to move members boats both coming and going, and working the booth as well. Thank you Steve. Although I have only helped with our booth once before at last years boat show, it definitely seemed to me that this year there was more interest in our displays and questions about our club and its activities. We had a very unique opportunity to highlight a classic before and after theme using the Gonzales family s unrestored (and I do mean UN-restored) Chris Craft Capri versus member Warren Olson s newly restored 1955 Capri. Aside from the more obvious visual differences between these two boats, if you were blindfolded and told you could not touch them, your olfactory nerve would immediately let you know which boat your were approaching. The sweet smell of 20 coats of varnish was in blunt contrast to over twenty years of storage and inactivity. Still, it was of immense value in showing the public what can be accomplished with vision and hard work. Thank you Warren for letting us showcase your beautiful craft. Warren and Tracey Olson at Mahogany & Merlot

3 Boat Show-Boat Show-The Big Seattle Boat Show! (Continued) As Frank tells it; back in 1987 his father was seriously thinking about purchasing a runabout, but the impending birth of a new daughter put that purchase on the back burner. Fast forward to the year 2000 and he again was on the hunt. He discovered the 56 Capri, a boat last licensed in 1994 and used on Lake Arrowhead, California, and purchased it to restore. Well, you know the old story about good intentions, (fast forward again). After three days of wrestling it out of a garage and swapping out trailers, Frank brought it down to the Seattle Boat Show, (rumor has it he pulled it through a car wash on the way), and put it on display. If you have a lot of time on your hands and need a new project, you could be the new owner of this boat. Contact Frank. Also on display at this year s show was member Brian Franchini s sparkling 1959 PlayMaster fiberglass runabout, powered by a 1998 Seado engine. Brian s son, Cole, also loaned us his 1959 Skeeto with its powerful 3hp West Bend. Thanks to the entire Francini family, Dianne too, for supporting the mission and goals of our club. Classifieds: Buy - Sell - Trade Advertising Policy The Wet Edge is published monthly on a volunteer basis. Each month a different board member (guest editor) puts together the newsletter. This allows for a wide variety of creativity and content. Classified ads are run for members free of charge. They are not automatically renewed. Please your ads to Kirk Knapp (kirkknapp@aol.com). He will forward the ad to whomever is doing the next newsletter. We also accept commercial advertising. A digital file that can easily be used is required. Contact Kirk for more information if you are interested. He will also quote you a rate. FOR SALE-Boat Show Special: 1957 Larson Thunderhawk Jr. w/ 40hp Honda & trailer Good condition-$10,000 Chett Kenoyer (360) Ways to stay connected online Just wanted to remind everyone that Facebook is being used to facilitate more social interaction both within the club as well as with potential new members. This site provides means to publish events, share pictures, and invite new people to join us. Please take a moment to check out our Facebook [ACBS - Antique & Classic Boat Society (PNW)] site. While you are there sign up for our group and even better, become an assistant organizer and help keep our group up to date. Contact Frank Gonzales (gonzalesfa@hotmail.com) if you have any questions or can help. 3

4 One Final Odyssey Our Pacific Northwest Chapter of the ACBS lost one of it founding members this past January. We lost Land Washburn to a long battle with cancer. Land was instrumental in the early days of our chapter and a critical eye on all that was the ACBS. Land loved wooden boats, and was a caretaker for many a beautiful one, two, three or more than should be mentioned here in print. Land also was one of the founding partners of Seattle s The Wooden Boat Shop which many of you long time members will remember down on Boat Street. Land s love for the craft and his love for those who care for them will be missed by many a wooden boat enthusiast. So raise a glass of fine single malt to our dear friend Land Washburn... We will miss you man! Chris Eden There will be a memorial service for Land in Bellevue on February 28th Please contact Clara for further details: Land with Brad Green and Joe Frauenheim, early in the am on an outing to drive to Spokane in January, simply to have lunch with Jim McGoldrick when he turned 90 in 2007 That s the kind of stuff Land was known to do. We will miss you Land!
