2 DEFIANT REQUIEM: VOICES OF RESISTANCE Sunday, April 9PM In the spring of 1944, a handpicked group of Nazi officers was treated to an unusual performance by inmates in a concentration camp. What appeared to be a soaring rendition of a choral masterpiece was intended as a subversive condemnation of the Nazis and a desperate message to the outside world. In the face of horrific living conditions, slave labor and the constant threat of deportation to Auschwitz, the Jewish inmates of Terezin concentration camp artists, musicians, poets and writers fought back with art and music. Re-enactment of Raphel Schacter playing piano in front of the Terezin Choir during a rehearsal. Tuesday, April 8:30PM In this moving documentary, a charismatic Holocaust survivor inspires her family to connect to relatives they never met. Focusing on her brother, Kalman, Anna recounts tales of a mischievous boy who tried to escape the Warsaw ghetto with her. Her daughter, an artist, devours the stories and paints his portrait over and over again. As Kalman s face emerges on canvas, the film moves from archival Warsaw ghetto footage to summers in a Catskills bungalow colony from vibrant family life before War II to now. Sunday, April 6PM The Holocaust Memorial on Miami Beach stands as a stark reminder and stunning symbol of anguish and tragedy. The memorial comprised of evocative stone and bronze sculptures, a meditation garden, a reflecting pool, an eternal flame and a granite wall honors the Holocaust s six million Jewish victims. Its centerpiece, The Sculpture of Love and Anguish, features a giant outstretched arm tattooed with a number from Auschwitz rising from the earth, depicting the last desperate reach of a dying person. Today, some Holocaust survivors serve as docents (guides) for the memorial, sharing their stories of survival to schoolchildren, tourists and visitors from across the globe. Sunday, April 9PM Orchestra of Exiles is the story of one man s four-year odyssey which culminated, in 1936, with the creation of a top-flight symphony orchestra in the desert outback of Palestine. This extraordinary feat was accomplished by an eccentric moral powerhouse of a man, a Polish Jew named Bronislaw Huberman who was one of the most famous violinists in the world. Huberman s Jewish musicians were among the best players of ; they were escaping a world that would soon be torn apart by Nazi aggression. Huberman s selfless efforts ultimately saved a 1000 Jews from the Holocaust and changed the landscape of cultural history. HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE MONTH
