1 Vanguard azz Orchestra Series K E N D O M S I C P E S E N T S TO THE DIECTO Thanks or your interest in this great music These rehearsal notes are meant as an adunct to the most important ork, un really, o listening to the recordings or better style: medium shule still, attending a live perormance We ve tried in this small space to give the student duration :0 THAD ONES by erome ichardson First ould be our primary obective, and that is to sing This music is an outgroth arranged by Thad ones o music that as meant or dancing and hen it s right, it makes you eel like moving All the harmonic and rhythmic sophistication o Thad ones and the other great INSTMENTATION riters, rom Fletcher Henderson to im McNeely, occur in the rameork o great time To this end, e need to be comortable playing our parts so that e can concentrate on connecting ith the other parts o the ensemble The suggested tempo Full Score Eb Solo Sheet markings represent the tempo that the composition as played at the time o Thad s Bb Solo Sheet departure rom the band in 1979 and generally are the upper end o the scale The C Solo Sheet arrangement can deinitely be played sloer, and should be i that makes it easier to Soprano Sax sing The VO doesn t alays play these pieces at the same tempo, as it s un to Alto Sax experiment Tenor Sax I Tenor Sax II is a simple tune composed by erome ichardson, loosely based Baritone Sax on The Preacher by Horace Silver The drummer has to be able to establish a good Trumpet I comortable shule on this arrangement There s more than one ay to do it o Trumpet II course and the choices you make in that regard are as personal as any other part o Trumpet III your playing Listen to Mel Leis certainly, but also to ohn iley ith largely the Trumpet IV same horn section No study o the shule ould be considered serious ithout Trombone I extensive time spent ith Art Blakey Shules are a required part o a drummers Trombone II repertoire even i it s less common currently Drummers, perhaps more than any Trombone III instrumentalist, need to see their instrument played, so atch videos as ell as listen Trombone IV to recordings Piano /Guitar (2 copies) Bass The centerpiece o this arrangement ould be the sax soli at letter D Study o this Drums soli is a great opportunity to improve your section by several degrees This has to EXTA SCOES & PATS AVAILABLE start ith each player bringing his or her game up in terms o sound and listening This soli uses a large dynamic range, hich is the thing most oten lacking in student Thad rote his irst azz arrangement at age 1 hen he as a trumpet player in his uncle's band in his native Pontiac, Michigan, along ith brothers Hank (piano) and Elvin (drums) In the 190's he served in the army, led a band o his on, and played ith other bands beore oining the Count Basie band in 195 Nine years later he let Basie and began arranging or singers, small groups, and the big Harry ames Band In 1965 Thad and drummer Mel Leis ormed their aardinning azz orchestra For the next 1 years this amazing band became an American azz institution They played Monday nights at the Village Vanguard in NYC on an almost continuous basis, on countless polls in "Don Beat," and recorded a series o albums that remain popular today, including "Consummation," "Central Park North," "Live At The Village Vanguard" and "Suite For Pops" (that includes all o us) a e hints and aareness o opportunities to improve the perormance sections Sectional ork is an essential and oyul part o learning this music Thad has some ork in store or the brass section as ell, ith an interesting chorus that ollos the bass solo and sets up the out chorus To o the more diicult things or a brass section are playing in unison, and intervals Both are required here One ay to help this happen successully, hich is also good or the music, is to drop back on the volume There s a long time yet beore the climax o the out chorus so don t pound on this and it ill be better in all departments Also, pay attention to the dissonances that are thron in One more note beore turning it over to David Demsey or some particulars Most all questions o balance, blend and dynamics can be ansered by simply knoing as much as possible about the music you are playing What s the orm o the tune Are you playing the melody, a counter melody, a background Who are you playing ith What s the chord and your position in it You ll ind even more questions and ansers, and i you stay ith it, you ll kno hy e re still, ater decades o playing this music, engaged and dedicated to it And remember, it s supposed to be un In 1979 Thad moved to and settled in Copenhagen, here he conducted the Danish adio Big Band and later ormed his on Eclipse big band eaturing an illustrious mix o players rom KendorMusiccom America and Europe The Vanguard azz Orchestra
2 HISTOICAL AND EHEASAL NOTES This is one o Thad ones most ellknon and idely played arrangements It is a rare example o Thad s arrangement o someone else s music, in this case a gospeltinged tune by his then lead altoist, erome ichardson The chord changes are closely related to Horace Silver s classic, The Preacher (hich in turn originated rom the traditional Sho Me the Way to Go Home) This ne edition o Thad s ork is taken directly rom the original ink parts Thad handed out to the band in 1968, and rom Thad s original pencil score no housed in the Thad ones Archive at William Paterson niversity, here Thad served as Founding Director o azz Studies The key to this arrangement is its rhythmic style a harddriving shule In a shule, a constant snare pattern is in tandem ith the ride cymbal, all ith a very tight skip beat played close to each upcoming donbeat The sax and brass igures are tight, alays playing their upbeats to lock in ith the ride cymbal/snare skip beat A great description o this time concept comes rom the legendary Basie alumnus Frank Wess, ho once said, That accent is not on the upbeat o our, it s ust beore one! As ith many Thad ones arrangements, a number o key stylistic elements are not printed on the original chart The rehearsal comments belo are taken rom recorded perormances o the original recording by the Thad onesmel Leis Orchestra, and rom more recent Vanguard azz Orchestra recordings This arrangement can be perormed at the deepest level hen band members are hearing these great recordings in their minds as they play In perormance, Thad made a nod to his nineyear membership in the Basie Orchestra by placing an open piano solo (on repeated choruses o the tune s orm) that precedes the irst note o the ritten arrangement That tradition continues to this day in the Vanguard azz Orchestra Think o the solo as an open repeat on the same chord sequence as Letter A to B, ith an Eb7 (V7) in the inal to beats o the measure beore B at the repeat A memorable early example is a 1968 video (no idely knon on YouTube and other sources) here this intro becomes a virtual piano concerto or the great oland Hanna; check out Thad s amazing command o dynamics in his conducting This arrangement is a eature or the saxophone section, and it is Thad s irst chart that uses the inluential innovation o soprano sax lead This piece ill build a strong sax section Playing the head melody in unison is an art in itsel, ith the relaxed bluesy poer that happens on the recordings There is a crescendo on the long note in the ith bar o A; keep the drop short in the 12th bar; the donbeat 16ths to bars beore B should be quick and snappy The sax soli beginning at Letter D is historic; any saxophonist should be amiliar ith it Again, it is important or each member o the section to hear the sound o the great recordings o this piece as they play it Make a big decrescendo on the chromatic line into Letter D and start this section quietly; the rhythm section also comes don in volume In general, higher equals louder, as the dynamics ollo the contours o the line There are numerous subtle phrasing moments in this soli, all learned best rom the recordings than rom any ritten list Thad alays thought o his big band as a small group ith sixteen members, like an improvising unit ith the lexibility o a azz quartet The example o that philosophy occurs at Letter G, hich is played in perormance ith continuous open repeats beteen G and H On the 1968 video, there is a onechorus piano interlude olloed by a lengthy (and sometimes very quiet!) ichard Davis bass solo; on the VO s Thad ones Legacy recording, there is a piano interlude olloed by multiple repeats or trombone, then another piano interlude and multiple bass choruses This section is a chance to eature one or more o your strong improvisers over classic gospelbased chord changes that they should all learn Note that the VO employs the brass lick in the measure beore Letter G as a background igure to punctuate the solos Thad used this technique constantly, borroing licks rom his on charts to use as background igures during solos The ensemble chorus begins at Letter H ith brass only, trumpets in unison ith trombone accompaniment The saxes oin in at Letter I, and the texture is rhythmic unison, classic shout style During this entire section, again higher is louder gives shape and energy to the lines Once band members have learned to read these igures, they should internalize the section by ear, practicing using headphones ith the volume up, to mimic playing this section ith the band, imitating articulation, phrasing and nuance Ater the DS, the igures in the irst to bars o the coda should be played ith the eighths noticeably quieter than the dotted quarters The saxophone igure in Measure 1 is staccato straight eighths, usually oined by the drummer Signiicant recordings o : Thad ones/mel Leis Orchestra, Central Park North (recorded 6/176/18/69) Solid State SS18058 Thad ones/mel Leis Orchestra, Basie, 1969: Siss adio Days Volume (recorded 9/69, released 1996) TCB 0202 Vanguard azz Orchestra, Thad ones Legacy (recorded 5/15/2/99) Ne World David Demsey Coordinator o azz Studies Curator, Thad ones Archive William Paterson niversity KendorMusiccom
