2 NOTES TO THE CONDUCTOR This arrangement oens ith the cello and contrabass sections recreating the bloing ind eect roduced by analog synthesizer on the original version nstruct the musicians to lightly slide their ingers u and don the neck on their highest string, moving in time, but not in unison, and ithout itch Give a listen to The Cars version to quickly gras the desired eect This sonic texture continues or the irst 11 bars o the song, even hile the violas begin the guitar ri in m The 16th note ubeats in this ri attern should be de-emhasized, much as a guitarist lightly continues to strum in beteen accented notes (Again, listening to the original ill make the desired articulation easy to understand) This ri is layed oten throughout the iece, even hen another instrument is laying the melody This irst haens at m 7, so it s imortant that the melody, in this case the 1st violins, are not droned out by the viola ri At m 12, the rhythm kicks in or the irst time, ith the celli and contrabass oining ith the 2nd violins to create the drum beat, hile the violas continue the guitar ri The 1st violins are back to textural mode as they slide u the neck beore the synth lick on beat in m 13 As alays, rock-solid rhythm is imortant as all these linear arts need to lock into one groove Due to the slo temo, this shouldn t be diicult, but make sure to kee the orchestra steady and moving as a unit throughout Also, because o the linear nature o all the individual arts, dynamics are imortant so that countermelodies don t bury lead melodies and rhythmic arts don t stick out too much Watch mm in the 1st violins the tricky rhythms could tri u the musicians, but the articulation and boings should hel make it layable ith a little ractice Measure 3 in the viola art looks tricky, but at this slo temo is not diicult to learn The cello melody at m 3 also looks diicult, so the inclination might be to lay it loud and aggressive; hoever, it should be layed light but still on the string e mindul o the dynamics in this assage Measure 58 has syncoated interlay beteen the 1st and 2nd violin sections Make sure the 2nd violin section locks in and doesn t rush or drag! At m 65, the viola and celli lay a unison synth line that acts as a turnaround back to the main groove This should be layed o the string and solidly, almost ith a slightly menacing attitude, but not aggressively rom there on out the song vams toards the big inish and the 2nd violins ortamento slide during the inal held chord Moving in Stereo, though a blast rom the ast, grabs the attention o today s young musicians The challenging rhythms, dynamics, and sonic textures o this arrangement ill ique the interest o the musicians and listeners alike Previe Only
