1 MR TEATHER S GUITAR STARS 19/10/17 Dobcroft Guitar Stars The Newsletter of Dobcroft Juniors Guitar Students Welcome to our first terms newsletter. Stars and rewards If you behave respectfully and try hard you get rewards. What s happening this term? What are we learning? Dear Parents, Carers and guitarists. Can I firstly say, I hoped you all enjoyed the Summer and feel refreshed for another school year. It was so lovely to see so many happy faces at school the first lessons back. My brilliant guitar stars have taken to playing chords with gusto this term and I hope you can see what progress they have made when it comes to changing chords quickly and smoothly. We have now got several chords that we use, these are: G, A, A-, E, Compose your songs Remember to use our chords to create your own sequence. 1 BE RESPECTFUL Listen to your groups comments and don t shout out. A hand in the air gets things done. PRACTICE Short but often practice. When you get home, take your guitar out of its case. 3 LISTEN TO MUSIC Musicians need to listen to music. It s what makes us amazing. 1

What we are aiming to do, for the next couple of terms is to start composing our own songs with the chords we already know and explore the possibilities of making music from the influences around us, wether that be the sounds we hear in nature or the playground etc. We also have an incredible chance of being involved with a composing workshop at school, that could culminate in our compositions being part of a huge orchestral piece which we will perform. More of that to come! We are also going to increase the number of chords we can play by adding new flavoured chords like dominant and major/minor 7. As for our new starters, they have shown great promise and it looks as though I ve got some wonderful new guitarists in the making. We have practiced working out what the notes on the stave are and are playing E, F & G on the first string with fingers 1 & 3 playing fret 1 & 3. We also now recognise crotchets (1/4 notes) and minims (1/ notes). Keep at it guys. My contact details are listed below. Also could I ask all parents to try and get their young guitarists to practice 3-5 minutes a couple of times per day. It s widely recognised that short and often practice is better than trying to do a half hour once a week. A little tip is to make sure our guitarists take their instruments out of their cases when they get home. Many thanks Iain.

The 1st string is the thinnest, and the 6th strings the thickest. When a number is placed on one of the lines, it indicates the fret location. [example 1.] This means to play the nd fret on the 3rd string. [example.] Practice playing through this little piece using PLECTRUM and using DOWNSTROKES. [example 3.] Is the MAJOR SCALE OF C or The C major scale. Practice EX 1and. So you can see how TAB works. Remember to use PLECTRUM and DOWNSTROKES. 7

9 The Language of Music: Time &Rhythm Music has a pulse. we call this pulse the beat. But music is generally more rhythmically complicated than a simple pulse-like beat. Some notes are held longer or shorter thatn the duration of a single beat. One useful purpose of musical notation is to indicate the duration of each note. Below are four note forms, each having a different value. By value, we mean the duration(how long)of the sound represented by the note. The duration is determined by the form(how it looks)of the note itself. Each of these notes has a corresponding rest indicating a period of silence. The duration of the rest(silence) is equal to the duraton of the dorresponding note. A piece of music is divided into small groups called measures or bars. Each measure will have the same number of beats. The note types and rhythms within bars may vary, but the sum duration of the notes in each bar must be equal. Bars are seperated by vertical lines called barlines. There are three main bar types; one of four beats, one of three beats and one of two beats. The bar is defined at the beggining of every piece of music by two numbers placed immediately after the clef sign. These numbers are called timesignature. The upper number denotes the number of beats in each bar, and the lower number tells the kind of note that each beat represents (=half note, 4=quarter note, etc).
