1 Emerson Choir/Guitar Lesson Plans Week of October 1 Choir Fundamentals Jazz Cantate Christmas Guitar Lead Guitar Method Book Christmas Introduction and Unit 1: Introduction to the Guitar and Basic Playing Techniques Guitar Method Book I: Introduction, Unit 1, One, Two, Buckle my Shoe, Song of the Wild Jellyfish General music terms: staff, measure, bar line, treble clef, rhythm, whole note, half note, quarter note, eighth note Guitar terminology: Abbreviation of right hand fingers from Spanish p = pulgar = thumb i = indice = fore/index finger m = medio = middle finger a = anular = ring finger Abbreviation of left hand fingers 1 = fore/index finger 2 = middle finger 3 = ring finger 4 = little finger/pinkie Rest stroke Parts of the guitar Note values Notes on the treble clef staff Rhythm New notes: D, B Hand positions for left and right hand Sitting position Rest stroke with RH finders Finger switching LH third finger Students learn the correct names for the parts of the guitar. Students perform a basic finger rest stroke.
2 Students play the D note with the left hand third finger. Students acquire correct sitting and hand positions. Students can identify the notes B and D, as well as basic note values (whole, half, quarter, eighth note). Students begin to read sheet music and identify the corresponding location for notes on the guitar. Students know the correct guitar abbreviations for left and right hand fingers. Math: Compare note values with fractions History: Research history of the guitar Writing: Write new words for One, Two, Buckle my Shoe keeping the same melody and rhythm Unit 2: String Crossing Guitar Method Book I: Unit 2, Star Light, Star Bright; Rain, Rain Song of the Wild: Fly, Ant Guitar terminology: String crossing, Strum New notes: G, E String crossing Students perform string crossing, moving from one string to the adjacent string. Students can identify the notes G and E. Students begin to read sheet music (new notes G and E) and identify the corresponding location for notes on the guitar. Biology: Research facts about a fly or an ant.
3 Unit 3: Intensified String Crossing, Finger Alternating and Left Hand Technique Guitar Method Book I: Unit 3, Ring Around the Rosy, Song of the Wild Praying Mantis General music terms: chromatic scale Mixing half, quarter and eighth notes, chromatic scale Intensified string crossing and finger alternating, chromatic scale Students play guitar with alternating fingers. Students can identify a chromatic scale. Students can perform a chromatic scale on the B string. Students begin to read sheet music with mixed rhythmic values. History: Research the original meaning of the words to Ring Around the Rosy. Unit 4: Chords Guitar Method Book I: Unit 4, Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star Song of the Wild Mouse General music terms: chord Guitar terminology: strum, chord symbol New Notes: C, A
4 New Chord: G Maj (simplified) Chords Strumming with RH thumb Students continue to perform string switching and finger switching. Students can identify the notes C and A on the staff and identify the corresponding location for those notes on the guitar. Students understand the concept of a chord. Students play a G Maj chord with implied pulse/meter. Students play in two part ensemble with chords and melody. Unit 5: Ludwig van Beethoven: Ode to Joy Guitar Method Book I: Unit 5, Ode to Joy General music terms: Ludwig van Beethoven, symphony, octave New Notes: F, G Intensified string switching and finger alternating Students perform intensified string switching and finger alternating. Students identify the notes F and G on the staff and identify the corresponding location for notes on the guitar. Students investigate the life and work of Ludwig van Beethoven. Reading: Research Beethoven s life and times. Writing: Write an extended biography of Beethoven. Visual Art: Find and discuss portraits and sculptures of Beethoven.
5 Content Standard #8: Understanding relationships between music, the other arts, and disciplines outside the arts Students compare in two or more arts how the characteristic materials of each art (that is, sound in music, visual stimuli in visual arts, movement in dance, human interrelationships in theatre) can be used to transform similar events, scenes, emotions, or ideas into works of art Students describe ways in which the principles and subject matter of other disciplines taught in the school are interrelated with those of music (e.g., language arts: issues to be considered in setting texts to music) Content Standard #9: Understanding music in relation to history and culture Students classify by genre and style (and, if applicable, by historical period, composer, and title) a varied body of exemplary (that is, highquality and characteristic) musical works and explain the characteristics that cause each work to be considered exemplary Unit 6: Left-Hand Contractions Guitar Method Book I: Unit 6, Rhythm and Blues, Song of the Wild: Butterfly, The Ant and the Butterfly General music terms: triplet Guitar terminology: left hand contraction Left-Hand Contractions Left-Hand Fourth Finger (4) Students perform left hand contractions. Students begin to use the LH fourth finger. Students accomplish all of the above while using only the tips of LH fingers to press down on the strings. Art: Visual representation of the Duo The Ant and the Butterfly.
6 Unit 7: Chromatic Scale on Two Strings and Advanced String Crossing Guitar Method Book I: Unit 7, Song of the Wild: Swan : Chromatic Scale on two strings Advanced finger alternating and string-crossing Students perform complex string crossing including skipping over adjacent strings. Students perform a two string chromatic scale while maintaining excellent LH and RH technique. Literature: What was the original intention of Aesop s fables? Unit 8: Final Unit of the Quarter-Review Guitar Method Book I: Unit 8 New Music Terms General music terms: none-review terms units 1-7 Guitar terminology: none-review terms units 1-7 Review of all theory learned in units 1-7: Parts of the guitar Treble clef Rhythm including time measures (whole, half, quarter, eighth notes and rests) Notes: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C Chromatic Scale (both on B string and on two strings)
7 Review of all guitar techniques learned in units 1-7: Hand and sitting positions Rest stroke with fingers Finger switching String crossing Left-hand contractions Left-hand fourth finger Students demonstrate knowledge of theory terms learned this quarter. Students are able to name all parts of the guitar. Students can read notes of the chromatic scale. Students demonstrate knowledge of time measures including notes and rests. Students are able to read simple songs from sheet music with practice. Students demonstrate good posture when playing the guitar. Students perform at least one song learned this quarter with accuracy and musicality using the correct guitar techniques (e.g. rest stroke, finger switching, string crossing, left-hand contractions) Assessment/Evaluation Ideas: Quarterly written theory test. Quarterly in-class recital. Unit 9: Dotted Notes Guitar Method Book I: Unit 9, London Bridge Song of the Wild: Grasshopper, Duo: Praying Mantis and Grasshopper : Dotted Notes Students understand the concept of a dotted note.
