: Single-Note Patterns Using the Four-Finger Technique Pattern-based fingerpicking is a style of fingerpicking where you fingerpick the rhythm of a song in a repeating fingerpicking pattern while you sing the melody of the song. Fingerpicking in this style is a great place to start if you re brand new to fingerpicking or if you re looking for fresh, new ways to add variety and flavor to the sound of a song you might normally strum. In this lesson, learn: Part II: Pattern-based Fingerpicking Two simple fingerpicking patterns using the four-finger picking technique Steady time and rhythm while fingerpicking To fingerpick and sing Camptown Races Chords Used In This Lesson Before going too far, brush up on the following ukulele chords used in this lesson: To play a C major chord, place your ring finger on the 3rd fret of the bottom A- string. Let the top three strings ring open. 1
To play an F major chord, place your middle finger on the 2nd fret of the top g- string and your index finger on the 1st fret of the E-string. Let the C-string and A-string ring open. To play a G7 chord, place your ring finger on the 2nd fret of the bottom A- string, index finger on the 1st fret of the E-string, and middle finger on the 2nd fret of the C-string. Let the top g-string ring open. Outside-In Fingerpicking Pattern (Four-Finger Technique) The outside-in fingerpicking pattern is a nice, easy-going pattern that can be used to play all sorts of songs on the ukulele. To play the pattern, use the fourfinger picking technique, as explained in Lesson #4, where you assign your thumb (represented by a p) to pluck the top g-string, index finger (represented by an i) to the C-string, middle finger (represented by an m) to the E-string, and ring finger (represented by an a) to the bottom A-string. As the name outside-in implies, in sequence, pluck the outside strings and then the middle two strings. Let each string ring out as long as possible until you pluck it again. Take a look at the tab: 2
To start, just practice the pattern playing a C major chord. Be sure to count out loud as you pluck each string in the pattern (1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, etc.). For this pattern, each pluck gets a count or one quarter note beat. Try to pluck each note in the pattern as evenly in volume as possible. For example, the top string shouldn t be significantly louder than when you pluck the bottom string. Keep in mind that you don t need to pluck the strings very hard to make them ring out. If this is your first time fingerpicking, it can be tough to get your fingers to do what you want them to do! Be patient with yourself and go slow at first. If you experience any soreness in your fingers, take a break and come back to it later. When you re ready, try adding in a chord change. Practice switching between a C and G7 chord every two measures: 3
Inside-Out Fingerpicking Pattern (Four-Finger Technique) The inside-out pattern is similar to the outside-in pattern. Flip it around a bit: in sequence, pluck the middle two strings and then the outside strings: Like you did with the outside-in pattern, practice switching between chords. This time practice switching between a C chord and an F chord every two measures. Don t forget to count out loud as you practice: For even more practice, write out your own chord progressions and practice changing chords using the outside-in and inside-out fingerpicking patterns like you did in the last example. While counting out loud, switch to a new chord on the first beat of the measure. You might write out and practice variations of these chord progressions: C-Am-G7-F Am-C-F-G7 C-F-Am-G7 4
How to Keep a Steady Fingerpicking Rhythm When performing a fingerpicking pattern, keep the following things in mind to help make your timing steady and fluid: Stay loose. Sometimes easier said than done, but if you notice tension or pain, it s better to stop, stretch out, and then, slow it down. Fingerpicking shouldn t hurt. Practice at a slow tempo to go fast. Speed will come in time; I will be addressing this specifically in the coming lessons. For now, focus on keeping your picking steady, relaxed and clear at a slow tempo before trying to set any world records for speed! Tap your foot to the beat. Tap the heel of your foot or toes to keep the beat as you fingerpick. Using an external tempo source like your foot helps strengthen your internal clock. Remember, it takes time and practice for your fingers to get used to the fingerpicking movement. Don t rush yourself and take your time! Play Camptown Races Use the outside-in fingerpicking pattern to play Camptown Races, as shown in the music on the pages ahead. Before trying to sing the melody of Camptown Races, just practice fingerpicking through the song s chord progression. In order to even think about singing or humming along, your fingers must be comfortable with the movements required in your fretting hand (chords) and picking hand (fingerpicking pattern). As you become more comfortable, start to hum the melody and eventually sing out the melody of the song. This song picks up the tempo a little bit. If it s too fast, don t be afriad to slow the tempo down and practicing slowly picking through the songs chord while progress counting out loud. The key is to play the pattern comfortably while switching between the chords smoothly and cleanly. You can always speed it up as you become more comfortable and confident with the transitions. Note: The squiggly up arrow next to the C chord in the last measure of the song indicates that you finish the song with one final down strum playing a C chord. 5
Once you re able to play Camptown Races using the outside-in fingerpicking pattern, you might try playing the song using the inside-out pattern too. 6
7 Part II: Pattern-based Fingerpicking
Practice Objectives Before moving onto the next lesson, practice and focus on the following: 1. Play the outside-in and inside-out patterns cleanly and smoothly 2. For now, focus on playing the fingerpicking patterns in the lesson accurately and in time rather than at a fast tempo 3. Come up with your own chord progressions and switch between common chords like C, G7, Am, and F chords using the outside-in and insideout patterns 4. Fingerpick while singing/humming/whistling the melody to Camptown Races using the outside-in pattern 5. Use the inside-out pattern to fingerpick Camptown Races You re well on your way to becoming a real fingerpicker on the ukulele! When you re ready, move to the next lesson. 8
